Abstract

This study examines public sentiment during flash floods in West Sumatra by analyzing Twitter data using NLP through text2data.com. It employs the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) method for topic modeling to identify key discussion themes. The results reveal that 97.9% of expressed sentiments were positive, focusing on disaster impacts, situational conditions, causes of floods, and public responses to government actions in disaster management. The research highlights the role of social media in shaping public discourse during crises. Its novelty lies in combining LDA-based topic modeling with sentiment analysis specifically for flash flood-related discussions on Twitter in West Sumatra. This approach provides insights into how communities communicate and perceive natural disasters through digital platforms, offering potential applications for crisis communication strategies and policy improvements in disaster response. The findings demonstrate the predominance of constructive dialogue during environmental emergencies on social media.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using Google Earth as an interactive medium in geography education, particularly on the topic of the location and physical features of the Earth’s surface. The research was conducted using the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method in two cycles, involving 36 students from class X.E at SMA Negeri 3 Cilacap. Each cycle included learning activities that integrated exploration of Google Earth features to enhance students’ spatial understanding. The results indicated a significant improvement in students’ learning outcomes, with the average score increasing from 64.38 in the pre-cycle to 78.28 in Cycle I, and further rising to 87.39 in Cycle II. Additionally, the percentage of students who met the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) increased from 75% to 94.44%. The use of Google Earth was proven to not only enhance spatial visualization but also to increase student engagement and learning interest. This study confirms that digital geospatial media can serve as an effective learning tool to improve students’ conceptual understanding and spatial thinking skills, while also providing empirical contributions in the context of geography education in developing countries.

Abstract

Climate change-induced floods have significantly impacted agriculture in several villages of Balong Subdistrict, Ponorogo Regency. This study aims to (1) assess flood impacts on agricultural systems, (2) analyze farmers' unpreparedness for climate change, and (3) evaluate government policy responses in supporting flood resilience. Using a qualitative case study approach, data was collected through interviews with 13 farmers, 1 village head, 1 agricultural office staff, and 1 irrigation officer, supplemented by field observations and document analysis. Findings reveal 156 hectares of crops destroyed, with farmers maintaining traditional practices despite climate variability. Most farmers perceived floods as natural events rather than climate change consequences, while government responses emphasized reactive measures over long-term adaptation strategies. The study provides practical recommendations for integrated flood adaptation combining infrastructure improvement, farmer education, and policy reform. These findings offer valuable insights for enhancing climate resilience in flood-prone agricultural areas across Indonesia. Abstract

This study examines the Land Surface Temperature (LST) using the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) model in Yogyakarta. SEBAL is relied upon for its accurate LST predictions because it takes into account the influence of vegetation and soil. This study identified LST in various land cover/land use (LULC) types extracted from Landsat 8 remote sensing images recorded in April 2019 (wet day) and June 2019 (dry day). The LULC classification results in the study area show that built-up land is the dominant land use, with 93.30% of the total area, and the rest is non-developed land (vegetation, open land, and water body). The average LST value on a wet day is 26.79 °C, while on a dry day, it is 30°C. The highest temperature occurs on the dry day, 35.17 °C, and the lowest on the wet day, which is 13.63°C. The correlation between LST and LULC shows the same pattern on the two different days, in which the value of vegetation temperature is lower than that of open and developed land. This research proves that vegetation influences a decrease in land surface temperature. Judging from the dominant land use being the built-up area in Yogyakarta, urban planners need to consider increasing green open spaces.

Abstract

This research aims to assess the level of disaster vulnerability in the Wonolelo tourist village area using spatial analysis with an overlay method of several factors causing disaster vulnerability. The location of Wonolelo Village on the slopes of Mount Merapi with a rather steep to steep topography makes Wonolelo Village very vulnerable to landslides and the eruption of Mount Merapi. The research results show that Wonolelo Village has a high vulnerability to volcanic disasters (63.71%) and medium vulnerability to landslides (99.12%). The findings of this research can be used to inform disaster mitigation policies and strategies in Wonolelo Village and other vulnerable areas.

Abstract

Sojol Subdistrict, Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi, is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, dominated by steep hills, sandy loam soil, and variable rainfall, making it highly prone to landslides. This study maps landslide vulnerability potential using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology through overlay with five weighted scoring criteria: slope gradient (DEMNAS), land cover, rainfall (CHIRPS), soil type, and rock type. Geological data and land cover data were processed using ArcGIS 10.8. The results of the study show that the landslide vulnerability level of Sojol Sub-district is divided into three classes: low, moderate, and high. Villages with high landslide risk levels are Siboang, Bou, and Balukang, characterised by steep slopes (>70%), sparse dryland forest vegetation, and clay rock types that are highly susceptible to erosion during the rainy season. The landslide hazard map can be used as a basis for disaster mitigation, spatial planning, and raising public awareness of landslide risks.

Abstract
