Abstract

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) has long been used as a medicinal plant because it contains bioactive compounds with various health benefits. This research aims to analyze the quality parameters, antioxidant activity and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrum of turmeric originating from Medan, Sumba and Papua. The water content test shows that turmeric extract from Sumba has a water content of 8.55%, better than extracts from Medan and Papua. The highest yield was found in turmeric from Sumba (18.55%). Antioxidant activity testing shows that turmeric extract from Sumba has the strongest antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 23.74 ppm. FTIR analysis shows the presence of hydroxyl groups (O-H) in the wave number range of 3500-3200 cm⁻¹ and C-H bonds at 3000-2800 cm⁻¹ in all samples. The results of this research show that turmeric from Sumba has better quality than turmeric from Medan and Papua.

Abstract

This study aims to predict the anti-inflammatory effects of compounds in Piper porphyrophyllum using in silico methods. The compounds were analyzed using AutoDock software to evaluate their binding potential with the target protein and Lipinski's rule of five to assess their drug-likeness based on pharmacokinetic properties. Qualitative results show that compounds such as 4'-hydroxy-3',5,7-trimethoxyflavone, 4',5-dihydroxy-3',7-dimethoxyflavone, and 5-hydroxy-3',4',7-trimethoxyflavone form significant interactions with key residues on the target protein. Quantitatively, these compounds exhibit more negative binding free energy compared to the natural ligand (-7.34 kcal/mol), with values of -8.35 kcal/mol, -8.13 kcal/mol, and -8.20 kcal/mol, respectively, indicating stronger binding affinity. Evaluation using Lipinski's rule shows that these compounds meet the criteria as potential drug candidates. In conclusion, this in silico method can predict the potential of Piper porphyrophyllum compounds as anti-inflammatory agents, supporting further research for experimental validation.

Abstract

Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) leaf extract is rich in flavonoids, which possess anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to enhance the anti-inflammatory effect of the extract through a nanoparticle gel formulation. Nanoparticles of the extract (NEP) were prepared using ionic gelation with a Carbomer 940 base. The anti-inflammatory efficacy of NEP was evaluated in vivo using a carrageenan-induced paw edema model in rats. Five groups (n=5) were tested: a negative control (Carbomer 940 gel base), a positive control (Sodium Diclofenac), and three NEP formulations with concentrations of 1% (NEP-1), 3% (NEP-2), and 5% (NEP-3). The NEP gels were homogeneous with a faint yellow color and a characteristic odor. Their spreadability ranged from 7.50 ± 0.67 cm to 7.69 ± 1.26 cm, viscosity exhibited plastic flow properties, and pH values were within 4.47 ± 0.06 to 5.20 ± 0.10. The anti-inflammatory effectiveness of NEP formulations increased with concentration, achieving edema inhibition rates of 3.66% (NEP-1), 68.47% (NEP-2), and 82.37% (NEP-3). In conclusion, the nanoparticle gel formulations of passion fruit leaf extract demonstrated good physical properties, with NEP-3 being the most effective in reducing carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats.

Abstract

Cinnamon bark is known as a medicinal plant to has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in vitro. This activity is due to bark of cinnamon containing several compounds including cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic alcohol, cinnamic acid and coumarin. The aim of this study was to observe anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in vivo. Anti-inflammatory test using Winter method and rats. Rats were divided into five groups negative control (aquadest), positive control (sodium diclofenac), and three extract groups with different doses (300, 400, and 500 mg/kg BW). In an analgesic test using the Siegmund method and mice. Mice were also divided into five groups negative control (aquadest), positive control (sodium diclofenac), and three extract groups with different doses (300, 400, 500 mg/kg BW). Based on a statistical test, 70% ethanol extract of cinnamon bark has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, also showed that there was a significant difference between the positive controls and the three extract doses. This shows that the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of diclofenac sodium is better than the ethanol extract of cinnamon bark in reducing the edema volume of rats and the amount of mice stretch. In conclusion,cinnamon bark showed no significant increment in high doses of anti-inflammatory and analgesic.

Abstract

Daun Jambu bol (Syzygium malaccense (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry) memiliki senyawa polifenol seperti flavonoid, asam fenolat dan tannin telah dianggap sebagai antioksidan. Penelitian ini bertujuan menguji aktivitas antioksidan ekstrak etanol 70% daun jambu bol (Syzygium malaccense (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry) berdasarkan parameter kadar malondialdehid (MDA) dan aktivitas superoksida dismutase (SOD). Mencit dibagi menjadi 6 kelompok yaitu: kelompok kontrol normal, kelompok kontrol negatif, kelompok kontrol positif diberikan vitamin C (2,6 mg/20gBB), dan 3 kelompok dosis ekstrak etanol 70% daun jambu bol (5; 10; 20 mg/20gBB). Pengukuran kadar MDA dilakukan dengan metode TBARs dan pengukuran aktivitas SOD dilakukan dengan metode Adrenochrome Assay. Hasil pengukuran kadar MDA pada kelompok normal, kelompok kontrol negatif, kelompok kontrol positif, kelompok dosis 5 mg/20gBB; 10 mg/20gBB; 20 mg/20gBB secara berturut-turut adalah 2,4814 nmol/mL; 5,0557 nmol/mL; 3,0153 nmol/mL; 4,7122 nmol/mL; 4,1289 nmol/mL; 3,5013 nmol/mL sedangkan untuk hasil pengukuran aktivitas SOD pada hati mencit adalah 124,9967 U/mL; 60,34 U/mL; 188,76 U/mL; 129,31 U/mL; 148,85 U/mL; 168,9667 U/mL. Kesimpulan hasil yang didapatkan adalah ekstrak etanol 70% daun jambu bol (Syzygium malaccense (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry) memiliki potensi antioksidan dengan menurunkan kadar MDA dan meningkatkan aktivitas SOD.

Abstract

Hair loss affects a substantial portion of the global population, regardless of age or gender. One effective strategy to address this problem is the use of hair tonics that stimulate hair follicle activity and promote hair growth. This study developed an innovative cosmeceutical nanoparticle-based hair tonic combining Nilam and Mulberry leaf extracts, termed nanoNilamBerry. The formulation was prepared using the ionic gelation method and evaluated on rabbits over 28 days by assessing hair length, growth rate, and hair weight. The nanoNilamBerry formulation fulfilled the physicochemical requirements of a nanoparticle system and demonstrated good stability at 4 °C, 25 °C, and 40 °C for up to 28 days. In antibacterial assays against Staphylococcus epidermidis, the Nilam–Mulberry extract produced an inhibition zone of 16.36 ± 0.35 mm, while nanoNilamBerry exhibited a larger zone of 18.4 ± 0.30 mm. The hair tonic formulation showed no signs of skin irritation. The nanoNilamBerry treatment resulted in a hair growth rate of 0.13 ± 0.03 cm/day and a final hair weight of 32.36 mg, compared to 0.09 ± 0.01 cm/day and 27.3 ± 0.31 mg for the simple Nilam–Mulberry extract. Overall, the nanoNilamBerry hair tonic demonstrated superior efficacy, promoting hair growth 3.04 times faster than the untreated control and 1.45 times faster than the non-nano extract combination. These findings indicate that nanoNilamBerry not only provides effective antibacterial protection but also significantly enhances hair follicle stimulation and growth performance.

Abstract

Sour lime (Citrus aurantifolia) is widely used in Indonesia for beverages and herbal remedies, but the bitterness of its peel limits its application in nutraceuticals. This study aimed to mask the bitter taste of sour lime peel (SLP) extract using β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to form inclusion complexes. SLP was extracted with 70% ethanol via ultrasonication, then combined with β-CD at different ratios: Ci1 (0.5:2), Ci2 (0.75:2), and Ci3 (1:2), and freeze-dried. The resulting complexes were evaluated for antioxidant activity (DPPH assay) and physicochemical characteristics (bitterness value, FT-IR, SEM, XRD, and DSC). XRD and SEM analyses confirmed all inclusion complexes' amorphous and irregular structures, indicating successful encapsulation. Ci1 and Ci2 showed no detectable bitterness, while Ci3 and the crude extract exhibited bitterness values of 5 and 9 units/g, respectively. FT-IR showed the absence of ester group peaks in Ci1, and DSC indicated a shift in the endothermic peak, supporting complex formation. Among the formulations, Ci2 demonstrated the best performance in masking bitterness while retaining antioxidant activity. These results suggest that β-CD inclusion complexes, particularly Ci2, effectively improve the palatability of SLP extract and are suitable for further development in functional beverages and nutraceutical products.

Abstract

Japanese taro (Colocasia esculenta (L) Schott)) is one of the edible plants that contain phytochemicals such as flavonoids, phenolics, triterpenoids, tannins, and vitamin C which are beneficial to the health of the human body. The compound is also known to have antioxidant activity. Proper extraction can produce quality extracts. This study aims to optimize the extraction method on Japanese taro tubers. Taro tuber was extracted using water with three different temperatures (room temperature, 40℃, and 60℃). The ABTS (2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) method was used to determine the antioxidant activity of the aqueous extract, in addition to determining the total flavonoid content by colorimetric test, and also analyzing the luteolin content by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) Densitometry. The total flavonoid content of Taro extracts at room temperature (TERT), 40℃ (TE 40), and 60℃ (TE 60) were 13.97±3.52 mg QE/gr extract; 7.99±2.10 mg QE/gr extract; and 5.98±0.49 mg QE/gr extract, respectively. Luteolin content of TERT, TE40, and TE60 were 0.27%±0.08; 0.25%±0.06; and 0.31%±0.05, respectively. Antioxidant IC50 values of TERT, TE40, and TE60 were 120.32, 137.03, and 159.37 µg/mL, respectively. The study shows that the greater the temperature in the extraction process, the less flavonoid and antioxidant compounds content. While there is a slight difference in determining luteolin levels, optimum luteolin content is obtained at 60°C for 6 hours.

Abstract

Agarwood leaves (Aquilaria malaccensis Lam.) contain chemical substances such as alkaloids, flavonoids, and triterpenoids that contribute to the healing process of burns. This study aims to evaluate the wound healing activity of spray-dried extract from agarwood leaves formulated into an ointment for second-degree burns. The method involves extracting agarwood leaves through the decoction method, followed by spray drying, and subsequent evaluation of the extract. The prepared extract was then formulated into an ointment and tested for wound healing activity on 24 white rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain, divided into four groups, each consisting of 6 rats: negative control (ointment base), positive control (Betadine®), formula 1 (agarwood leaves extract ointment with 20% extract concentration - ALO-20), and formula 2 (agarwood leaves extract ointment with 30% extract concentration - ALO-30). Second-degree burns were induced by exposing the rats' backs to ferrous metal for 3 seconds and treating them for 14 days. Observations were made by assessing changes in burn diameter and scab formation. In this study, ALO-30 demonstrated superior activity. Scab formation was faster on day 3, and the burn diameter was reduced by day 7. The results indicated that ALO-30 led to a quicker reduction in wound diameter compared to ALO-20 and the negative control. Agarwood leaves extract ointment with a concentration of 30% (ALO-30) exhibited a more effective wound healing effect than the ointment with a 20% concentration (ALO-20).
