Abstract

Students' low initial reading ability often hinders their learning. Therefore, it is important to know the extent of students' early reading abilities so that any problems that arise can be addressed early on. This study aims to describe the initial reading abilities of first-grade students. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study involved 60 students from two schools, as well as two first-grade teachers, to gain insight into the factors that hinder students' initial reading abilities in first grade. The initial reading test used the Early Grade Reading Skill Assessment (EGRA) instrument. The results showed that 80% of students still needed guidance, 12% of students were in the good category, and 8% were in the sufficient category. Based on the EGRA assessment indicators, the highest percentage was in letter recognition ability at 43%, while reading comprehension was the lowest at 8%. Other indicators included reading syllables at 34%, reading words at 28%, listening at 29%, and fluency at 19%. The factors causing low reading skills included students' low interest and motivation to read, insufficiently varied teaching strategies and media, a lack of facilities and infrastructure for reading instruction, and the role and support of parents at home. The implication of this research is to determine students' initial reading abilities and their contributing factors, so that strategic steps can be taken to address the low initial reading skills of elementary school students.

Abstract

Low initial reading skills are an indication of low student literacy. This research aims to analyze the early reading skills of Phase A students, which includes grades 1 and 2 of elementary school. The research used a descriptive qualitative method, involving 122 students from two elementary schools in Garut Regency, aged 6 to 8 years old. The instrument used in this study was the Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) reading test. The results of the study showed that 68% of students in Phase A had early reading skills in the category of needing guidance. Meanwhile, 6.6% of students were in the sufficient category, and 25.4% were in the good category. Based on EGRA indicators, letter recognition ability has a percentage of 55.15%, syllable reading ability 48.76%, word reading 41.49%, listening comprehension 34.44%, fluency 31.87%, and reading comprehension 16.53%. Thru analysis of the implementation of the EGRA test, students' reading abilities can be mapped more deeply, allowing teachers to take further action appropriate to the needs of each student. This finding is expected to serve as a basis for schools to design more effective learning strategies to improve student literacy in elementary schools.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigated the growth responses of four rubber scion clones (GT 1, IRR 112, PB 260, and RRIC 100) to different fertiliser types and concentrations at Politeknik Negeri Lampung from August to December 2024. The experiment employed a factorial randomised complete block design with two factors: clone type (four levels) and fertiliser treatment (5% NPK, 10% NPK, 5% KNO?, and 10% KNO?). Growth parameters, including leaf number, chlorophyll content, branch number, and leaf whorl number, were measured 2 and 4 months after treatment. The results showed highly significant effects (P < 0.05) of clone type, fertiliser treatment, and their interaction on all measured parameters. Clone GT 1 consistently exhibited superior performance across all variables, with the combination of GT 1 and 10% NPK producing the highest values: 94.00 leaves, 66.25 SPAD units, 7.75 branches, and 62.00 whorls four months after treatment. The 10% NPK treatment significantly outperformed KNO? formulations across all clones, demonstrating the importance of balanced macronutrient nutrition, including phosphorus. The study concluded that GT 1 clone fertilised with 10% NPK solution represents the optimal combination for maximising scion production efficiency in rubber nursery systems, providing valuable guidance for clone-specific nutritional management strategies.
