Abstract

Coral reefs are coastal ecosystems with the highest level of diversity with about one million species worldwide and are habitats for assemblages of millions of polyps that produce limestone to form their skeletons and develop into vast expanses of colonies. Corals are invertebrates belonging to the phylum Coelenterata (hollow animals) or Cnidaria. In order to preserve the coral reef ecosystem in the future in the Bahowo area, quantitative data is needed that can explain/describe the condition of coral reefs. The purpose of this study was to determine the condition of coral reefs, in this case, data on coral cover and associated biota in Bahowo waters. The data collection of this research used the UPT (Underwater Photo Transect) method. Abstract

Coral recruitment is the entry of new coral individuals into coral reef populations due to reproduction or migration. Juvenile coral is the result of metamorphosis and growth of coral planula measuring 5 cm and attached to certain substrates. There are two types of substrates in the waters, stable substrates and unstable substrates such as rubble. The purpose of this study was to study hard coral recruitment, both in terms of density, the composition of juvenile coral colony types, size, and the type of substrate occupied by juvenile corals. This research was conducted in August 2021 in the waters of Molas, Bunaken District, Manado City. The method used for site selection is the purposive sampling method and data collection using a sampling method with quadrant transects. The results showed that the density of coral recruitment at the study site was 8,43 colonies/m2. The percentage of juvenile coral attachment on stable substrates is 90% and 10% on unstable substrates. The average size of juvenile corals at the study site was 2.4cm. The composition of the juvenile coral genus found at the research site were corals of the genus Acropora, Anacropora, Coeloseris, Cycloseris, Cyphastrea, Echinopora, Favites, Fungia, Galaxea, Goniastrea, Isopora, Leptastrea, Leptoseris, Lobophyllia, Merulina, Montastrea, Montipora, Oulophyllia, Pachyseris, Pavona, Platygyra, Plasiastrea, Pocillopora, Porites, Psammocora, Scolymia, Seriatopora, Symphyllia, and Trachyphyllia. Of the entire genus, corals of the genus Porites were dominated by the number of juveniles as many as 36 colonies. Keywords: Molas, coral, recruitment, ScleractiniaAbstrakRekrutmen karang adalah masuknya individu karang baru pada populasi terumbu karang dikarenakan reproduksi ataupun migrasi.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the type of mangrove, mangrove density, mangrove thickness, tides, associated biota objects, tourism suitability index, and carrying capacity of the Darunu mangrove tourism area.  The research period is October-December 2023.  The research methods used are cruising survey for mangrove species, line transect for mangrove density, remote sensing for mangrove thickness, and visualization for associated biota objects.  Data analysis for the tourism suitability index (IKW) and area carrying capacity (DDK) is guided by the provisions of Yulianda (2019).  The IKW value is 2.0 with the appropriate category and the DDK value is 25 people per day.  The size of the DDK value of the mangrove tourism area depends on two main factors, namely the length of tracking and the length of operating time.  The greater the value of tracking length and the length of operating time, the greater the DDK value, conversely the smaller the value of tracking length and the length of operating time, the smaller the DDK value.  As a recommendation to the village government to be able to extend the tracking distance by utilizing the mangrove spaces that are still available, in addition to the tourist period can be extended with adequate facilities such as electricity, lighting, etc. so that the value of DDK can still be achieved as much as possible to increase the economic income of the village community while still paying attention to environmental sustainability.  Furthermore, community participation to preserve this mangrove forest area is needed for the sustainability of ecotourism-based mangrove tourism at Darunu Mangrove Park. Keywords: Area carrying capacity, Darunu Mangrove Park, Ecotourism, Mangrove, Tourism suitability index. Abstract

This study aims to determine the differences in shell dimensions (length, width, and height) of Patelloida heroldi between two locations: an exposed intertidal stony shore and a sheltered intertidal stony shore. The research was conducted at Magarizaki Beach, Tomioka Peninsula, Amakusa, Japan, over two months from March to April 2024. Sampling was conducted using 25 x 25 cm quadrats along a line transect. The results showed that the average shell size of P. herolda at the exposed shore was 7.52 mm in length, 5.57 mm in width, and 2.23 mm in height, while, at the sheltered shore was 5.34 mm in length, 4.10 mm in width, and 1.81 mm in height. The shell size of limpets living on the exposed shore was significantly larger than those on the sheltered shore (t-student, P < 0.05). This study suggests that the difference in limpet shell sizes between the two locations was not influenced by population density, but was likely affected by differences in food supply and sedimentation levels in the areas. The impacts of environmental factors and food supply on the growth of limpets at the two locations are necessary to study in the future.
