Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is an important approach to preparing younger generations to face global challenges such as environmental, social, and economic crises. Integrating ESD into science instruction is crucial because science provides the conceptual foundations and critical thinking skills needed to understand sustainability issues. Despite growing attention, implementation remains uneven and the literature is imbalanced across region, levels, and designs. This study examines trends, focus, and research gaps related to ESD in science education through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) combined with bibliometric analysis. Data were obtained from the Scopus database using the keywords “education for sustainable development” and “science education,” which yielded 81 articles published between 2015-2025 and 46 articles were deemed eligible for analysis. Beyond thematic synthesis, the bibliometric maps reveal the field’s structure, temporal dynamics, and the peripheral positioning of several ESD integrations within science classrooms. The SLR results indicate that research on ESD in science education is dominated by qualitative studies focusing on environmental awareness and sustainable attitudes, leaving a limited evidence base to estimate causal impacts on science competencies and 21st century skills. There are gaps in the development of innovative ESD-based learning models, particularly at the elementary and secondary levels, as well as limitations in measuring 21st-century skills integrated with ESD principles. These findings highlight the need for further exploration of effective and contextual pedagogical approaches to implementing ESD in science education. Methodologically, the concurrent use of SLR and bibliometrics still uncommon in science education to adds depth and enhances interpretive validity.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of rice straw pretreatment using sodium hydroxide and the addition of molasses as a co-substrate on biogas production through anaerobic fermentation. The pretreatment process involved immersing rice straw in sodium hydroxide solutions at three different concentrations for twenty-four hours, while molasses was added at varying levels to evaluate its effect on the fermentation process. Compositional changes in the lignocellulosic biomass were analyzed using the Chesson–Datta method, which revealed significant alterations in cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin contents. The lowest sodium hydroxide concentration produced moderate delignification while retaining a relatively high cellulose content, indicating its potential as the optimal pretreatment condition. Molasses addition consistently increased biogas production as dosage levels rose, with the highest yield observed at the maximum molasses concentration. The combined application of the lowest sodium hydroxide concentration and the highest molasses level resulted in the maximum biogas yield, demonstrating improved substrate biodegradability and fermentation efficiency. These findings highlight the practical potential of integrating NaOH pretreatment with molasses co-substrate addition to enhance the conversion efficiency of lignocellulosic agricultural waste into renewable energy through anaerobic fermentation.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the need for virtual laboratory media (V-Lab) that integrates differentiated learning using the STEAM approach for electroplating and electropolishing. The research method used is qualitative-descriptive, with the research subjects comprising 3 teachers and 75 students from two public senior high schools and one vocational high school in Metro City, Lampung. Data collection used questionnaires, learning observations, and interviews. The results of the observations show that chemistry learning is still dominated by lectures and exercises (40%), while limited equipment, materials, and costs, as well as the risk of hazardous waste, continue to limit practical activities. Students experience significant difficulties in visualizing sub-microscopic phenomena, especially in determining ion flow (74%) and reactions at the anode-cathode (62%), resulting in a low ability to calculate Faraday's Law (60%). Cognitive data analysis shows a diversity of student abilities, with the majority being at the "need guidance" level (41%). These findings underscore the need for innovative learning media, with 100% of teachers and 77% of students agreeing with the development of V-Lab integrated with differentiated learning and the STEAM approach. V-Labs are expected to transform abstract concepts into concrete ones, increase motivation, and accelerate the learning pace of diverse students without the physical risks of a laboratory setting.

Abstract

The challenge of developing environmentally friendly synthesis methods for biologically active compounds remains a significant focus in green chemistry. This study aimed to synthesize 4'-hydroxy-4-nitro chalcone from 4-hydroxyacetophenone and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde using a grinding technique and then characterize the synthesized compounds. The 4'-hydroxy-4-nitro chalcone was synthesized via the Claisen-Schmidt grinding method for 45 minutes at room temperature. The grinding results were extracted with chloroform. The formed crystals were tested for purity by thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and further purification was carried out by recrystallization. The synthesized chalcone was characterized using FTIR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR  spectroscopy. The chalcone was also tested for antibacterial activity using the disc diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The results showed that 4'-hydroxy-4-nitro chalcone could be successfully synthesized from 4-hydroxyacetophenone and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde using the grinding technique, yielding orangish-white crystals with a 70.63% yield and a melting point of 173°C. Purity was confirmed by TLC, and structural characterization was achieved through FTIR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Antibacterial testing revealed that the synthesized chalcone produced a clear zone diameter of 9.27 mm against S. aureus and 27.88 mm against E. coli. These results indicate that the compound has relatively strong antibacterial activity against E. coli and relatively weak activity against S. aureus. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the green synthesis method and provides valuable insights into the antibacterial properties of 4'-hydroxy-4-nitro chalcone

Abstract

Recently, research on the chemistry of natural products as medicinal has been increasingly developed; this is because natural products have many chemical components, have the potential biological activities without side effects, and are easy to obtain. One of these natural products is Lempuyang Emprit (Zingiber amaricans BL.) essential oil. The researchers guided UKM Suti Sehati to develop a new product: a hand sanitizer containing Lempuyang Emprit essential oil (LEEO). This study aims to make ten hand sanitizer formulas by varying LEEO concentrations and determine the best formula based on the physical properties and antibacterial activities. The best formulation obtained was then optimized with variations in fragrance concentration. The best product was selected by a hedonic test using 30 untrained panelists based on the parameters of color, scent, texture, pH, homogeneity, speed of drying, causing no red skin, causing no pain, and causing no dry skin. The antibacterial activity tests were performed against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 using the disk method. The LEEO isolation was carried out using steam and water distillation methods, and the chemical components of the best product was identified using the GC-MS method. Based on the hedonic test, the best hand sanitizer product contains 1.5% LEEO and 3% fragrance. This product has a strong antibacterial activity value against S. aureus ATCC 25923, with an inhibition zone of 15.95 mm, and a moderate value against E. coli ATCC 25922, with an inhibition zone of 9.42 mm. The hand sanitizer product contains 21.35% of Zerumbone and exhibits antibacterial and antioxidant capabilities.
