Abstract

This study aimed to explain the existence of the Tri Dharma -Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism-, including their ritual practice and emergence factors in the Satya Budhi Vihara, the oldest Vihara in Bandung City. This research is carried out as descriptive qualitative research with mixed methods, consisting of participant observation, interviewing, and content analysis to obtain the necessary data. This study concluded that the Tri Dharma religions have a relationship where the followers of those three religions are traced back and came from the same Chinese ancestors. In addition, Tri Dharma, as a meeting point between the three religions, may be defined as a form of syncretism of the traditional beliefs of the Chinese community, which has had a significant influence on Chinese history for 2500 years. In the Satya Budhi Vihara Bandung, these three religions are interrelated and develop in the same society flexibly without any theological disputes.

Abstract

In itsdevelopment, Hinduism experienced many changes to its modern era. Apart from all its traditions, Hinduism tries to introduce its existence on the world stage. Reformers of modern Hinduism such as Sri Ramakrishna, Rammohun Roy, and Swami Vivekananda themselves contributed greatly to this new idea with their respective models of practice. Departing from Swami Vivekananda attending the World Religious Parliament in Chicago in 1893, he brought the vision of his spiritual teacher Sri Ramakrishna about the Harmony of Religions are true. In the Parliament, he upheld his Vedanta teachings, which have been reinterpreted according to his Ideal concept, that Vedanta is the teaching of the future. Based on its Universal concept, Vedanta is able to take the World’s attention to its teaching in the West. In an effort to realize this idea, 1897, Swami Vivekananda disseminated the religious message of his teacher by establishing the Ramakrishna Mission, an organization to strengthen and expand the Vedanta idea. Since its inception, the Ramakrishna Mission has been dedicated to improving spiritually and social service, as well as developing religious teachings.

Abstract

This paper is a qualitative theological research discussing Dante Alighieri’s (d. 1321) account of LGBT-Q (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) based on his major work, Inferno, with a particular reference to Medieval Christian tradition. Accordingly, this paper used content analysis to apprehend major literature on Dante and LGBT-Q. This paper concluded that the term Sodom and Gomorrah, the cities demolished due to homosexual violation, is apparent in his work. Furthermore, as several Biblical texts also suited the concrete image of those cities, Dante’s Inferno also presented Medieval Christian position concerning homosexuality, which is condemn homosexuality as lust against the role of nature, so it is equated with committing violence against God.

Abstract

The Controversy of the concept of Kafir -excluding a religious group from one- is basically related to the doctrine of Religious Pluralism. Religious Pluralism relativized and nullified religious values so, by consequence, it reduced the theological concepts that existed in religions. In fact, every religion owns its own concepts regarding ‘The Other’ affirmed as its fundamental teachings. This paper will find at least two things: The concept and term of Kafir are already full-fledged in Islam, which was curtailed in the process as an impact of Religious Pluralism. Furthermore, Religious Pluralism is potentially reducing argumentations of the concepts owned in three Major Religions: Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.

Panca Sradha is a belief for Hindus that must be firmly entrenched in the hearts of Hindus in order to achieve the goal of life in the world. Reincarnation according to the teachings of Hinduism is included in the Panca Sradha beliefs, which must be believed by Hindus. The process of reincarnation is a unique and abstract phenomenon that requires knowledge to understand it and research it. Many figures have succeeded in researching the process of reincarnation. Reincarnation will continue to occur to a person until the spirit reaches a perfect and eternal point, this place is known as moksha. The process of reincarnation often occurs when a person is reborn in a different form but in the same atma/soul.

Carried out as literature research, this paper utilized the content analysis method to select and unify Kuntowijoyo’s works and then explained the results gained from the analysis. This research concluded that Prophetic Social Science was capable to be implemented within the framework of Material Religion; reconstructing an advanced conception of science, culture, and community from the Islamic perspective.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the symbolism contained in St Peter's Cathedral, a historic church in the city of Bandung. Designed by architect Ir. C. P. Wolf Schoemakre and blessed by Mgr Luypen, the construction of St Peter's Cathedral shows a variation of the generally gothic European architectural style, while still incorporating symbolic elements of the Catholic religion in its architectural structure. These symbols not only have a decorative function, but also contain religious values that show the spiritual majesty reflected in the architectural form of St Peter's Cathedral. To uncover the religious meanings contained, the researcher used field observation methods and rigorous interviews. This research concludes that every religious symbol in St Peter's Cathedral has a religious dimension that calls for sacred respect by its adherents. In this ever-evolving era, deep meaning is often lost in the attention to mere appearance, resulting in insensitivity to the values embedded in symbols. Hence, an in-depth examination of the richness of meaning in these symbols becomes indispensable. As such, this article offers a fundamental and in-depth analysis of the symbolism of St Peter's Cathedral, exploring the depth of spiritual meaning embedded in each of its architectural details.
