Abstract

Various disasters that occur in Indonesia are caused by several factors that can trigger casualties, environmental damage, property losses, and even adverse psychological impacts. The presence of such disasters causes pressure on disaster victims both from external and internal factors that can raise doubts or difficult situations that can threaten one's religious practice. This paper aims to show the role of religious communities towards disaster victims in Indonesia in order to increase the religious resilience of people affected by disasters. From the results of the research that has been done, it can be concluded that disaster victims in Indonesia will be able to go through the difficulties and pressures caused by disasters if they stick to religious practices and teachings socialized by religious communities. Religion teaches many important things concerning social benefit. Individuals and communities who feel pressure and sadness when faced with trials must hold fast to religious values in order to survive and find a way out of the complexity of the problem at hand.

Tana Toraja people, apart from their official affiliation to Christianity, yet practised an indigenous ceremony known as Rambu Solo’ as a part of Aluk Todolo, which is identified as a local belief system of the Tana Toraja. To describe a proper image of both rituals simultaneously, this paper used some methods: structuralism, comparison, and interviewing. The structuralism method of research came more profound into a comprehension of the funerals regarding their prominent position within Tana Toraja people; the comparison method traced both similarities and differences of the ritual based on its theological origin and practises while interviewing was done formulating pieces of information derived from Tana Toraja religious figures and intellectuals, stood for an additional effort enriching available documented sources. This research concluded that the community of Tana Toraja combined their death ritual from both Christianity and Rambu Solo’ basis, making it an inevitably distinguished ritual practise. Considering the traditions’ divergent values, the discussion suggests multiple identity belongings in the local Indonesian context.

Abstract

One of the major Hindu holidays in Indonesia is Nyepi day, where the holiday is held or commemorated to welcome the arrival of Saka day. Meanwhile, according to its dating, the Saka new year falls on the Apisan Sasih Kedasa or Eka Sukla Paksa Waisaka calendar, which is exactly the day after Tilem Kesanga or Panca Dasi Krisna Paksa Sasih Chaitra. The commemoration of Nyepi day itself has meaning in every series that was carried out before. Some of the ceremonies or rituals that are carried out are the Melasti Ceremony and also Tawur Kesanga. The Melasti ceremony itself aims to eliminate the suffering of the people, releasing the impurity and filthiness of the people, which is explained in the lontar Sanghyang Aji Swandala. Meanwhile, in the Sundarigma lontar, it is explained that the Tilem day of the month of Chaitra is the day of purification of the Gods, taking the water of life in the middle of the ocean, therefore Hindu people/men should observe and make offerings to the Gods. Nyepi day is the best day to make oneself a better person than before and as an effort to establish a true self. It is at the time of Nyepi that Hindus can continue to remember the essence of truth because only truth is eternal among others. Keywords: Nyepi, Hinduism, Spiritual, Saka

Abstract

This research aimed to elaborate on the Indonesian Jewish community, represented by The United Indonesian Jewish Community led by Rabbi Benjamin Meijer Verbrugge and Sha'ar Hashamayim Synagogue under the spiritual guidance of Rabbi Yaakov Baruch. This research followed the theoretical framework of multiple religious belonging (MRB), pioneered by Catherine Cornille (1961–). This research combined primary data from in-depth interviews conducted offline and online with congregation members of both communities, as well as an extensive literature review. This research commenced its analysis by considering the conflicting religious identities of Indonesian Jews within their Indonesian identity card (Kartu Tanda Penduduk, abbreviated KTP in Bahasa Indonesia), which eventually investigated the identity of Indonesian Jews. This research concluded that MRB’s scientific schema, consisting of elements of Cultural Belonging, Family Belonging, Situational Belonging, Believing without Belonging, and Asymmetrical Belonging, may not fit entirely to the theological concern of Indonesian Jews, yet some of its elements may fit into a more secular, lower, context of ‘Civil’ Identity. The ambiguity of the existence of Indonesian Jews prevails because they are Jewish, practising Jewish rituals, and firmly committed to Jewish tradition, yet cannot conceal their Jewish identity fully in their KTP. Further investigation concerning their level of religiosity and how their Jewishness is practiced may invite further research.

Abstract

The issues of religious freedom and interreligious relations have been extensively debated. While the emergence of new theories and views often leads to the destruction of religious identity, in fact, tolerance and freedom lead to a strong religious identity. The Ottoman Turkish Empire, which once oversaw a third of the world's territory, presented a system that regulated existing differences. The system, named the Ottoman millet system, allegorized its people into religious communities to make it easier for religious believers to express their religious identity. The purpose of this study is to reveal the relevance of the system to the form of interreligious dialogue and harmony that occurs in the lives of religious communities. To reveal the answer fot this research question, the researcher used the content analysis method and the qualitative-phenomenological approach by looking at the object of research based on the phenomenon of how people under the Islamic rule of Ottoman Turkey as the subject of research could coexist despite coming from different nations and religions. The result found that the Ottoman millet system was implemented successfully because of the agreement of two elements in the state, namely its citizens in carrying out their obligations and the government that gave them their citizenship rights. The level of religiosity is one of the critical factors in applying this system in that era because of a deep understanding of tolerance between religious communities.

Abstract

Abstract

This article explores the origins of anthropocentrism in Christian eco-theology, a concept mainly introduced by Lynn White (1907-1987). It also examines the subsequent debates, especially from the perspective of theocentrism, which opposes the Anthropocentric model. Content analysis is used to understand the language and social functions of anthropocentrism and Christian eco-theology in academic literature while also examining the key arguments related to the topic. Meanwhile, discourse analysis is employed to reinforce the findings. The study concludes that Lynn White’s work, The Historical Roots, initiated further contemporary debate on Christian eco-theology. As experts claimed, the error committed by White may have caused tremendous damage to the Christian tradition. However, it also enriched subsequent inquiries into the development of Christian eco-theology. Moreover, the anthropocentric framework in Christian eco-theology was also partly a result of misinterpreting Genesis 1:27, which is closely related to the various interpretations of Imago Dei (image of God). Theocentrism, as such, possibly occupies a central position in present-day apologetics regarding eco-theology in Christianity, providing further opportunities for discussion in defending Christ's relevance to the recent environmental crisis.
