Abstract

This study describes the pragmatic meanings of phatic communication in podcast media from a discursive pragmatic perspective based on inferential-ostentive intent. The data source comes from seven episodes of the Agak Laen podcast titled "Didn't Get Angry Even After Crashing a Pajero? 'Habib, I'm Just Happy'" featuring Habib Husein Ja'far Al-Hadar and hosts Boris Bokir, Oki Rengga, Bene Dion, and Indra Jegel. Data collection employed the listening method with note-taking techniques, followed by data reduction and classification. Data analysis used the contextual analysis method involving conventional and virtual contexts, with multimodality-based cybertextual context being the most dominant, along with social, societal, situational, and cultural contexts. Research steps included identification, reduction, interpretation, and presentation of data analysis results. The results of this study are: (1) The pragmatic meaning of the phatic communication of greetings, (2) The pragmatic meaning of the phatic communication of jokes, and (3) The pragmatic meaning of the phatic communication of affirmations. Among the total data analyzed, greetings accounted for 41%, jokes for 36%, and affirmations for 23%, indicating that greetings were the most dominant form of phatic communication found in the podcast. The results of this study are believed to be very useful in developing the science of pragmatics, especially integrative pragmatics which is the integration of discursive pragmatics and multimodality in its five dimensions, namely visual, spatial, gestural, aural, and linguistic.

Abstract

This study investigates how anger functions as a communicative strategy for negotiating identity, power, and social hierarchy within the context of Javanese interaction, particularly among speakers who represent a cultural minority within Indonesia’s broader linguistic landscape. Moving beyond universalist interpretations of anger as purely an emotional outburst, this study conceptualizes anger as a culturally situated and socially meaningful act. Using a socio-pragmatic framework grounded in Goffman’s face theory and Brown and Levinson’s politeness model, the study qualitatively analyzes naturally occurring expressions of anger collected from Javanese digital discourse. The analysis reveals that anger is not merely an antisocial or impolite act but a pragmatic performance that affirms self-worth, challenges authority, and restores disrupted social balance. Five dominant identity functions of anger emerge: self-assertion, defense of dignity, moral correction, contestation of disrespect, and negotiation of masculinity. These functions highlight how anger, while face-threatening, becomes a resource for identity positioning and community solidarity within Javanese cultural logic. Furthermore, digital environments allow speakers to reframe traditional norms of emotional restraint, reflecting a generational shift in how minority identities express moral and social legitimacy. The study contributes to understanding the intersection between culture, emotion, and discourse by revealing how anger articulates both vulnerability and empowerment within culturally embedded communicative systems.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to depict pragmatic functions of lullabying within the Javanese cultural context, examining how linguistic practices in early infant caregiving facilitate emotional bonding, cultural transmission, and behavioral socialization. Utilizing a qualitative, discursive-integrative pragmatic framework, the research employs multimodal discourse analysis on verbal lullabies collected from digital social media platforms, notably TikTok. Data were collected using the observation method combined with the note-taking technique. Subsequently, the data were analyzed through the application of a contextual analysis method. The results of the analysis reveal five pragmatic functions of lullabying in Javanese caregiving practices. These five functions are as follows: (1) shooting songs using metaphorical language to convey protection and comfort; (2) onomatopoeic refrains that leverage rhythmic repetition to capture attention and induce calm; (3) ludic and culturally embedded references connecting infants to Javanese heritage; (4) vernacular intimacy that subtly guides behavior through affectionate, colloquial speech; and (5) playful nonsense lullabies infused with domestic referentiality to create soothing yet engaging interactions. These findings reveal lullabying as a complex pragmatic performance deeply rooted in Javanese values such as humility, social harmony, and compassion, serving not only as a means of soothing but also as a culturally specific mechanism for early moral and social education.

Abstract

Reading and writing literacy were the main foundations for successful learning at the elementary school level, especially for first grade students who were in the early stage of language development. This study aimed to (1) describe the importance of reading and writing literacy for first-grade students, (2) analyze the factors influencing students’ reading and writing literacy, and (3) identify teachers’ strategies to foster reading and writing literacy among first-grade students. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method with a library research design. Data were obtained from scientific articles and journals published between 2021 and 2025 that were relevant to the topic of reading and writing literacy. The data analysis technique used content analysis, which included data reduction, classification, interpretation, and verification. The results showed that reading and writing literacy played a crucial role in building the foundation of students’ critical, creative, and communicative thinking skills from an early age. Factors influencing literacy development included internal factors such as motivation, reading interest, and cognitive ability, as well as external factors such as family support, teachers’ guidance, and a literate learning environment. The effective strategies to promote literacy were the 15 minute reading activity before lessons, the provision of classroom reading corners, the use of illustrated media and contextual writing activities, and collaboration between teachers and parents in home literacy practices. Through well planned, engaging, and sustainable strategies, students’ reading and writing literacy skills could develop optimally as a foundation for lifelong learning success.

Abstract

This study investigates the manifestations and pragmatic meanings of phaticity in podcast interactions through a discursive-integrative emic–epistemological pragmatic approach grounded in the ostensive–inferential framework. The research aims to uncover how phatic practices are produced, interpreted, and function interactionally within contemporary podcast discourse. The data consist of podcast utterances that exemplify various forms of phatic communion in natural language use. The substantive data source comprises podcast discourse containing identifiable phatic elements, while the locational data source includes a range of podcasts accessed throughout the research period. Data were collected using a non-participatory observation method, specifically through close and repeated listening to the selected podcast episodes. A systematic note-taking technique was employed to document relevant phatic expressions, enabling effective data organization, categorization, and analytical traceability. Data collection was deemed complete once all instances had been exhaustively classified into analytically relevant types serving as the basis for interpretation. Data analysis was conducted using a contextual pragmatic method that integrates conventional context and virtual context, with particular attention to the multimodal cybertextual environment of podcast interactions. In line with the principles of third-wave pragmatics, the analysis also incorporates social, societal, and cultural dimensions, emphasizing participants’ emic perspectives while maintaining epistemological rigor. The analytical procedure involved data identification, classification or reduction, pragmatic interpretation, and systematic presentation of findings. The findings reveal three dominant manifestations of pragmatic meanings of phaticity in podcast interactions: (1) greeting-related phatic meanings, functioning to initiate and sustain interpersonal engagement; (2) humor-related phatic meanings, serving to build rapport and interpersonal alignment; and (3) emphasis-related phatic meanings, which reinforce attentiveness and interactional involvement. These findings demonstrate that phaticity in podcast discourse operates as a dynamic pragmatic resource shaped by inferential intentions, discursive context, and digitally mediated interaction.
