Abstract

The importance of using modal qualifiers as a component of argumentative writing in the discussion section of student theses has not been fully realized by students. In fact, this component greatly determines the level of strength of the argument as a vehicle for conveying scientific truth. Scientific truth can be tested through the strength of the argument that appears in the selection of the types of modal qualifiers that accompany the position statement. This study aims to describe the manifestation of the form and function of the modal qualifier as a booster in argumentative writing for thesis discussion. The research data is in the form of excerpts of claims which contain boosters from the thesis discussion section of students of the Indonesian Language Education Master’s Program at Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Data was collected by listening method with note-taking technique. Furthermore, the stages of classification and typification of data are carried out. The analytical method used in this study is the distributional analysis method and the content analysis method. The results of this study are the following forms of capital qualifiers as boosters: (1) definitely, (2) necessary, (3) must, (4) certainly, and variations in form. This study also found seven booster functions as follows: (1) affirming by showing confidence, (2) affirming by giving recommendations, (3) affirming by confirming something, (4) affirming by confirmation of clarity, (5) affirming by inferring purpose, (6) affirming of intent by ensuring, (7) affirming by suggesting something.

Abstract

Speeches are often construed to exert one’s power while projecting a political intent towards the audience. This research examines how power is reflected in speeches by Shinzō Abe, a former Prime Minister of Japan, through the categorisation of speech acts. The speeches were delivered in many of his press conferences during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research employed a quantitative approach, and the analysis largely drew on Searle's classification of speech acts to identify and categorise Mr Abe’s expressions of power. Data for this study focused on various formal press briefings, interviews, or other communicative exchanges he conducted in his role as a prime minister. Eight texts were selected for the analysis, and they were collected from the website of the Japanese Prime Minister's Secretariat office from February to May 2020. Findings from the analysis indicated that the prime minister mostly utilised performative verb utterance directions, such as informing (66%), asking (78%), promising (90%), thanking (54%), and deciding (76%), in a form of polite and respectful language, Keigo, to demonstrate reverence towards diplomatic entities. In addition, he frequently highlighted statistical data regarding the circumstances and the prevailing factors of the pandemic that led to a regime of truth and knowledge about Covid-19 in Japan. The findings provided better understanding of Shinzō Abe’s exercise of authority in managing the variability of Covid-19 incidences in Japan, as reflected in the movement of relations with the society and with those diplomatic entities. This suggests that Shinzo Abe’s speeches during the pandemic have a potential pathway that world leaders, linguists or students can traverse and inquire into to ensure community resilience to counteract the fragility caused by a pandemic.

Abstract

Damage to the natural environment caused by exploitation, deforestation and uncontrolled deforestation is also a major concern. The Indonesian Language Education Study Program at the Masters Program, Sanata Dharma University has included the Ecolinguistics course since its establishment in 2015. The purpose of this research was formulated as follow: Describe the feasibility of developing a Naturalistic Ecolinguistic learning model in the perspective of Green Ecology. The research and development steps follow the model proposed by Borg and Gall consisting of the following stages: a) The initial stage involves research and data collection by collecting relevant information to formulate a product design framework. b) The planning stage involves making a product development plan. c) The product draft development stage involves the initial development of the ecolinguistic learning model design. d) The initial field trial phase involved limited field trials to collect data to be used as a basis for product design revisions. e) The main product revision stage. f) The main field trial phase involves a wider trial of the ecolinguistic learning model design product. g) The product improvement stage based on field test results involves product design improvements based on input from field trials. h) The field implementation test phase involves testing the product design. i) The final product improvement stage. j) The dissemination and implementation phase focuses on disseminating the ecolinguistic learning model. The research results showed that 43% of respondents stated that it was suitable for use with revisions according to the notes and 57% of respondents stated that it was suitable for use without revisions. Thus, it can be concluded that the ecolinguistic learning model for the Indonesian Language Education Masters Program is feasible to implement without revision.
