Abstract

Background: Industrial forest plantations, particularly Eucalyptus pellita, are widely cultivated for pulp and paper production. However, nurseries of E. pellita, including those in the R&D facilities of PT Arara Abadi, are frequently infested by pests such as Strepsicrates sp. Synthetic pesticides are commonly applied to manage these infestations, although their use may pose risks to the environment. As an alternative, botanical pesticides derived from Annona muricata leaf extract have gained attention. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of A. muricata leaf extract in controlling Strepsicrates sp. and to determine its optimal concentration for application in E. pellita nurseries. Methodology: The experiment employed a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of four treatments with five replicates. Data were analyzed using Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) at a 5% significance level. The treatments consisted of concentrations of 10 g/L, 20 g/L, 30 g/L, and 40 g/L. Observed parameters included room temperature, relative humidity, time to initial mortality, time to 50% mortality, daily mortality rate, and total mortality. Findings: A. muricata leaf extract was effective in controlling Strepsicrates sp. on E. pellita. The results indicated that the optimal concentration was 40 g/L, resulting in the shortest initial mortality time of 5.2 hours, a median lethal time (LT₅₀) of 22.58 hours, and  a total mortality rate of 100%. Contribution: The findings of this study indicate that A. muricata leaf extract at a concentration of 40 g/L has strong potential for application as an environmentally friendly, effective, and sustainable botanical pesticide, supporting integrated pest management in E. pellita nurseries and reducing reliance on synthetic chemicals

Abstract

Abstract

Kuala Tolam Village, Pelalawan Regency, Riau Province, is one of the regions that still possesses significant peatland forests, which are ecologically, socially, and economically important. However, pressures from plantation expansion, land conversion, and limited community knowledge about forest functions have made this area vulnerable to degradation. This community service activity aimed to enhance public knowledge of the importance of forests. The method employed was socialization through an educational, participatory, and interactive approach combined with small group discussions. The respondents in this activity were stakeholders involved in community deliberations with the Siak Pelalawan Landscape Program in the context of forming a collective commitment to maintain forest functions and areas. The results of this activity showed an increase in community knowledge about forest functions as measured by several aspects, namely forest definition, forest types, and forest functions. Community understanding of the definition of forests increased by 39%, knowledge of forest types around Kuala Tolam Village increased by 36%, and knowledge of forest functions increased by 30%. These findings indicate that the socialization and educational approaches applied were successful in raising public awareness of the importance of forests in supporting the community’s commitment to preserving forest functions and areas. Furthermore, the formation of such commitment, supported by enhanced knowledge and understanding, is expected to serve as a strong foundation for establishing a forest patrol and monitoring team in Kuala Tolam Village, Pelalawan Regency.

Abstract

Soil is an important component of forest ecosystems because it acts as a provider of nutrients, a support for vegetation, and a regulator of biogeochemical cycles. Variations in the physical and chemical properties of soil are greatly influenced by vegetation cover and soil depth. This study aims to analyse the chemical properties of soil in two types of vegetation cover, namely dense and moderate cover, in the Riau University Arboretum, which was determined using the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) method. Soil samples were taken at three depths (0–10 cm, 10–20 cm, and 20–30 cm) to determine the vertical variation in soil chemical properties. The parameters analysed included pH, organic carbon (organic C), total nitrogen (total N), phosphorus (P₂O₅), and potassium (K₂O). The results showed that soil pH was in the acidic category, ranging from 4.43 to 5.21. Organic carbon content was higher in the surface layer than in the lower layers, with the highest value of 5.14% in medium cover. Total N content was low in all samples (0.11–0.25%), indicating a limitation of nitrogen as a factor restricting vegetation growth. The nutrient elements P₂O₅ and K₂O tended to be higher in the surface layer, especially in dense cover (P₂O₅ = 26.66 mg/100 g; K₂O = 24.56 mg/100 g). In general, dense cover was able to maintain nutrient availability better than medium cover, although medium cover had relatively higher organic C content on the surface. These findings confirm that vegetation cover plays an important role in maintaining soil quality, and the preservation of dense vegetation needs to be optimised to support soil fertility and the sustainable conservation function of the arboretum.
