Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder whose increasing prevalence poses a major public health challenge. Adults aged 45 years and older are particularly vulnerable because of age-related changes in glucose metabolism. This study aimed to identify factors associated with DM among adults aged ≥45 years in Bener Meriah Regency. This cross-sectional study included 235 residents of Mekar Ayu Village, Timang Gajah District, selected using total population sampling. Data on dietary patterns, lifestyle, and sleep patterns were collected using questionnaires, while diabetes status was determined through blood glucose measurement. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis, the chi-square test, and multiple logistic regression with a 95% confidence interval. Diabetes was identified in 64 participants, resulting in a prevalence of 27.2%. Dietary patterns, lifestyle, and sleep patterns were significantly associated with the condition. Poor dietary patterns were the strongest associated factor. Participants with poor dietary patterns had 6.54 times higher odds of having DM than those with healthy dietary patterns after adjustment for lifestyle and sleep patterns (AOR = 6.54; 95% CI: 3.22–13.27; p < 0.001). The findings indicate that diabetes is relatively prevalent among adults aged ≥45 years in the study area, with dietary patterns as the most dominant associated factor. Community health centers should strengthen nutrition education, practical dietary counseling, promotion of active lifestyles and healthy sleep habits, and regular screening of high-risk adults.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Iron deficiency anemia remains a major public health problem among adolescent girls, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Limited knowledge, poor adherence to iron and folic acid supplementation, and suboptimal utilization of Youth Integrated Health Posts (Posyandu Remaja) contribute to the high prevalence of anemia. Community empowerment through trained youth health volunteers is a promising strategy to strengthen anemia prevention and early detection. This community service program aimed to empower youth health volunteers and provide assistance for adolescent girls in preventing and controlling anemia in Seulalah Village, Langsa Lama District, Langsa City, Indonesia. A community empowerment approach was implemented from 19 to 21 June 2026 through health education, training on Youth Integrated Health Post services, hemoglobin screening, iron and folic acid tablet distribution, and follow-up mentoring. Twenty youth health volunteers participated in the education and training sessions, while 45 adolescent girls underwent anemia screening. Knowledge was assessed using pretest and posttest questionnaires, whereas volunteers' practical skills were evaluated after the training. Adolescent girls diagnosed with anemia received iron and folic acid tablets and were monitored for seven days through home visits and WhatsApp communication. Before the intervention, 90% of the volunteers had moderate knowledge and 10% had poor knowledge regarding anemia prevention. Following the program, 90% achieved good knowledge and 10% had moderate knowledge. Furthermore, 85% of the volunteers demonstrated excellent practical skills in conducting Youth Integrated Health Post activities. Hemoglobin screening identified anemia in the 45 adolescent girls, all of whom received iron and folic acid supplementation accompanied by follow-up mentoring. Monitoring results indicated that all participants completed the recommended supplementation during the seven-day follow-up period. Community empowerment through education, volunteer training, anemia screening, and follow-up mentoring effectively improved volunteers' knowledge and skills while supporting adherence to iron and folic acid supplementation among adolescent girls. Strengthening Youth Integrated Health Posts through trained peer volunteers has the potential to become a sustainable community-based strategy for preventing adolescent anemia.  Keywords: Adolescent Girls, Anemia, Community Empowerment, Youth Integrated Health Post.

Abstract

Gestational hypertension (GH) is a common pregnancy complication associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes and is often accompanied by anxiety, which may be associated with elevated blood pressure. This study examined the association between participation in a hypnotherapy program and changes in blood pressure, anxiety, and gestational duration among pregnant women with GH. A quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test control group study was conducted among 50 pregnant women with gestational hypertension in Aceh Barat Regency, Indonesia. Participants were recruited using purposive sampling and allocated through a non-random procedure to an intervention group (n = 25), which received structured hypnotherapy in addition to standard antenatal care, or a control group (n = 25), which received standard antenatal care alone. Anxiety was assessed using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS), while systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured before and after the intervention. Continuous outcome measures were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for within-group comparisons and the Mann Whitney U test for between-group comparisons. The intervention group demonstrated significantly greater reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and HARS anxiety scores than the control group (*p* < 0.05). Although improvements in categorical blood pressure and anxiety status were observed in both groups, these descriptive findings did not reflect the magnitude of change captured by continuous measurements. No statistically significant between-group difference was found for gestational duration (*p* > 0.05). Participation in the hypnotherapy program was associated with greater improvements in blood pressure and anxiety than standard antenatal care alone.
