Abstract

The performance of school principal in managing human resources involves efforts to develop and utilize the potential of teaching and educational staff effectively to achieve educational goals. This research aimed to analyze the performance of the principal in managing human resources and the principal's efforts in improving the skills of English teachers at SMK Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Utara. The research method used was a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through direct observation and structured interviews with the school principal and two teachers. The research results showed that school principal demonstrated good managerial competence in three main aspects: leadership, management of teacher and staff human resources, student management. The principal was success in leading meetings effectively, providing clear direction, and motivating teachers and staff for professional development. In managing human resources, school principal routinely carry out performance assessments, prepared efficient work schedules, and encouraged staff participation in decision making. In the field of student management, the principal was success in managing the admission of new students, placing students according to their abilities, and apart from that, the principal also provided teachers' needs such as books, dictionaries and moreover the principal gives teachers the freedom to increase their potential independently and also implemented MGMP (Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran) as an effort to improve the skills of English teachers. The school principal demonstrated strong leadership, effective human resource management, and successful student management.

Abstract

This research was aimed to improve the students’ ability in writing announcement through Gallery Walk Technique at tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Idanoi in 2022/2023. The researcher employed a classroom action research design conducted over two cycles. The research focused on the students of X-MIPA. The instruments utilized for this study were a writing test, and an observation sheet. The results of each cycle revealed that in Cycle I, the technique was not successful. Therefore, the research continued to the next cycle after revising the plan based on the weaknesses identified in Cycle I. The findings of Cycle II indicated that 7 students (33%) reached the 'good' level, while 14 students (67%) achieved the 'very good' level. These results demonstrate that the implementation of the 'Gallery Walk Technique' in this study successfully enhanced students’ writing announcement text.

Abstract

Speaking was one of the essential skills in language learning. It was necessary to communicated effectively in a language. When students speak English they do not explore their speaking skills because of a lack of knowledge in speaking. Therefore, to minimize students' speaking problems, the researcher apply board games as a medium to increase students' speaking ability. The purpose of the research is to increase the students’ speaking ability through Board Game at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Lahewa Timur which the total numbers of the students was 20 persons. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. This research was applied into two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The instruments used by the researcher to collect the data were observation sheet, test and field note. From the result of each cycle, the researcher finds that the students get an improvement in their speaking through Board Game. At the second meeting of cycle II the researcher obtained an increase in students, that students overall reached MCC (70).

Abstract

Reading is the process of getting ideas from texts. Reading comprehension meant understanding what had been read and it was an active thinking process that depends. There are several problems faced by students in reading comprehension at the Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Lahewa, one of which was have problem in comprehending skill in their reading. Therefore, to overcome this, researcher conducted research using the Listen-Read-Discuss strategy. The purpose of the research is to Improving the Students’ Reading Comprehension through Listen-Read-Discussion (LRD) strategy at the Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Lahewa in 2022/2023. The results of the study were seen from the average score of students from the test evaluation sheet. There are 3 students (10%) included in the failed level, 3 students (10%) included in the less level, 11 students (36%) included in the sufficient level, 4 students (13%) included in good category and 9 students (30%) are included in the very good category. In Cycle II students' abilities increased. There are no students who are categorized as failed and lacking. The highest score is 100 and the lowest score is 75. There is 1 student (3%) "enough level". 4 students (13%) at "good level", and 25 students (83%) at "very good level". From the results of the study it can be concluded that the Listen-Read-Discuss Strategy improves reading comprehension at the Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Lahewa in 2022/2023.

Abstract

Writing is a crucial skill in language that enables individuals to express their thoughts and ideas. However, many of students difficulties with writing, and teachers play a significant role in aiding students to achieve their desired learning outcomes. The purpose of this study was to analyze the learning management based on Merdeka Belajar curriculum in teaching writing skill class at SMP Negeri 2 Dharma Caraka. Two English teachers and 27 students were observed through a qualitative descriptive analysis that focused on planning, implementation, and assessment. The results revealed that the learning planning was well-prepared by creating learning devices such as ATP and MA, equipped with completeness criteria. ATP provided is equipped with ten completeness components, while the MA consists of three general components. However, the MA created by the first English teacher has better completeness criteria than the module created by the second English teacher and the modified module can be developed into a learning book. Moreover, the learning implementation was conducted into three stage of learning by integrating Merdeka curriculum principles and varied teaching techniques such as lecturing, discussions, Q&A, quizzes, and PjBL. The evaluation approach consisted of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments, demonstrating excellent learning management of the teacher. However, some students showed minor difficulties in writing, they were able to express their ideas, communicate their opinions, and improve their writing skills through the observed teacher's excellent management of the class.

Abstract

Blended Learning might be one of many choices that educators and students apply in listening class. Post pandemic time, numbers of synchronous and asynchronous learning are arranged to cope with better learning. This research was conducted to see the effectiveness of Blended Learning when applied in Listening skill subjects. The subject of the research was 64 students of the 2nd semester of English Education Study Program at Universitas Nias in 2022/2023 who took Intermediate Listening class. The data gained from the observation and semi-structured interviews to both lecturer and students to gain clear data, and were analyzed through descriptive qualitative analysis. The result of the research revealed that the Blended Learning in Intermediate Listening class was considerably effective but considered as a new style of learning, need more improvement on competence, digital literacy and dedication.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the effect of using the Draw Me Game on students' vocabulary mastery in the eighth grade at SMP Negeri 3 Gunungsitoli Utara. The research employs a quasi-experimental design and uses multiple-choice tests as the instrument. Based on the data analysis, the study concludes that the implementation of the Draw Me Game in the experimental class at SMP Negeri 3 Gunungsitoli Utara yielded significant results. Students in the experimental class showed a clear improvement in their vocabulary skills, with average post-test scores categorized as good after the treatment. In contrast, the control class, which did not receive the treatment, exhibited less significant results, with average scores remaining in the poor category. Statistical testing confirms that the Draw Me Game has a positive and significant effect on students' vocabulary mastery, indicating that this method is effective in enhancing students' learning achievements.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the student's views on the school library as a learning resource for reading English, the involvement of English teachers in making the school library as a learning resource for students to read English and the availability of school library collections can be used as a learning resource for students to read English. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with the research subjects being students, an English teacher, and the head of the library at SMA Negeri 1 Lahewa. Data were collected through observation, interview, and documentation techniques. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data display, and verification or conclusion. The results showed that students of SMA Negeri 1 Lahewa have not fully utilized the school library as an English learning resource. From the available data, only 37.83% of students have used the library as a learning resource, while the others (62.16%) have not optimally utilized the facility. The main obstacles identified were the inadequate library opening schedule and the limited collection of English books. The involvement of the English teacher in making the school library a learning resource for students in reading English at SMA Negeri 1 Lahewa has played a quiet role, providing explanations about the library, inviting students to visit the library to learn together, sharing knowledge, look for book references for assignments and inviting students to make reading book reports containing summaries of books. Then, the availability of book collections at SMA Negeri 1 Lahewa library did not provide enough for the learning needs of students in reading English. It is supported by students' statements during interviews that most of them found the difficultness to get the appropriate English books.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the classroom management strategies applied by the English teachers in the eighth grade at SMP Negeri 3 Gunungsitoli Alo'oa in increasing student learning motivation, as well as to assess the outcomes of these strategies. The research method employed is qualitative with a descriptive methodology, involving data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the classroom management strategies applied including seating arrangements, varied teaching methods, and the provision of positive feedback significantly contribute to enhancing student learning motivation. Appropriate physical classroom arrangements that align with student characteristics, along with the use of diverse teaching methods such as group discussions and give praise, have proven effective in maintaining student engagement and interest. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of structured classroom management, flexibility in teaching methods, and the application of positive feedback in creating a supportive learning environment that boosts student motivation. These findings support theories regarding the influence of classroom design, varied teaching techniques, and positive feedback on student learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to determine and describe the learning process in the Paket B education program and the differences between Junior High School and the Paket B education program. This research was conducted at PKBMs that implement the Paket B Program in Gunungsitoli City, consisting of PKBM Ziona, PKBM Pelita Bangsa, PKBM Kreasi, and PKBM Perjuangan. The research method used was a qualitative descriptive approach. Data was collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the learning process in Paket B consists of 3 types, namely, Independent, Tutorial, and Face-to-Face, and there are differences in the learning process between SMP and Paket B in Gunungsitoli city, such as the characteristics of students, facilities and resources, learning schedules, teaching methods, and examinations carried out. In addition, there are also similarities between these two institutions, such as the curriculum used, which is the national curriculum, and the diploma issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture, which means that Paket B is recognized and has the exact legality of junior high school. The learning process in junior high school tends to be more structured and formal, while in Paket B, it is more flexible and individualized to suit the students. Efforts are needed to integrate the advantages of each learning system to create a more effective learning environment for all learners in each education unit.
