Abstract

Speaking is one of the basic skills in learnng English that enables students to convey ideas and communicate effectively. However, many students still face difficulties in speaking due to various factors, such as lack of vocabulary, fear of making mistakes, and lack of confidence. This research aims to analyze students' perceptions and the factors affecting their difficulties in speaking English. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with data collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The research was conducted at the eighth grade of SMP Swasta Kristen BNKP Gunungsitoli with 18 students as participants. The findings revealed that students experienced various difficulties in speaking English, which were categorized into psychological problems (such as fear of making mistakes, shyness, anxiety, lack of confidence, lack of motivation, lack of pronounciation, and lack of vocabulary), language problems (including inhibition, nothing to say, low and uneven participation and the tendency to use mother tongue), and other influencing factors (such as physical condition, intelligence, aptitude, and interest). Most students showed lack of confidence and anxiety when speaking English, which led to limited participation during English class. The results of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for teachers to develop more effective and student-centered teaching strategies, and to create a supportive learning environment that encourages students to speak actively in English.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of visual arts to enhance vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at UPTD SMP Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli Alo’oa. The problem identified is students’ limited vocabulary caused by monotonous, text-based teaching methods that reduce motivation and engagement in English learning. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) employed a qualitative approach over two cycles, each involving planning, action, observation, and reflection. Visual art media used included an animated video and a thematic image titled “Home Sweet Home,” both designed to present vocabulary contextually and engagingly. Data collection tools included observation sheets, field notes, and evaluation tests using multiple-choice questions with visual cues. The minimum passing criterion was set at 70%. Results showed improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery, with average scores increasing from 84.83 in Cycle I to 92.00 in Cycle II. Students displayed greater understanding, enthusiasm, and participation when learning with visual media. The integration of both video and image media proved more effective than using a single medium, helping students connect vocabulary to visual contexts. In conclusion, visual arts are effective tools for vocabulary instruction, enhancing comprehension, memory retention, and student motivation in English learning.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the English speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Lahewa through the implementation of a blended learning model. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this research involved 22 students, with data collected through observation, interviews, and oral tests. The findings indicate that students' speaking skills generally range from a fair to a good level. Quantitative analysis of the oral test results reveals average scores of 2.8 for pronunciation, 2.5 for grammar, 2.4 for vocabulary, 2.3 for fluency, and 3.0 for comprehension. While most students demonstrated a decent understanding of spoken English, significant challenges persist in vocabulary retention, grammatical accuracy, and fluency. Students perceive blended learning as engaging and flexible; however, they express a preference for face-to-face interaction due to the opportunity for direct speaking practice. The study concludes that although the blended learning model shows promise, it requires further optimization, particularly in designing interactive online components, to effectively enhance students' productive language skills.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of self-directed learning (SDL) strategies on students' reading comprehension at PEMBDA 2 Gunungsitoli Private Junior High School. The background of this study shows that students experience difficulties in understanding reading texts, which has a negative impact on their academic development. The research method used was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest design involving two groups: an experimental group using the SDL strategy and a control group using conventional methods. The results showed a significant increase in students' reading comprehension skills in the experimental group compared to the control group. The average pretest score of the experimental group was 43.47 and increased to 89.47 on the posttest, while the control group only increased from 36.27 to 48.13. The t-test showed a significance value (p 0.05), indicating the effectiveness of the SDL strategy in improving reading comprehension. In addition, the N-Gain value for the experimental group was 0.814 (high category), while the control group was only 0.185 (low category). The conclusion of this study is that the application of the SDL strategy significantly improves students' reading comprehension skills, creating a more independent, enjoyable, and meaningful learning experience. This study recommends the use of the SDL strategy in English teaching at the junior high school level as an effective method for improving student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Reading aloud is an important basic skill in English language learning. However, students in class VIII-A UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli are facing difficulties in reading aloud, such as incorrect pronunciation, monotonous intonation, low voice volume, and lack of expression. This study aims to analyze students' ability to read aloud and the factors that influence it. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with 32 students as subjects. Data were collected through observation, reading aloud tests, interviews, and documentation. The assessment was based on four aspects: pronunciation and clarity, fluency, volume, and intonation with expression. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed that most students were in the low and very low categories, and there were no students who reached the excellent category. Errors most often occurred in pronunciation and intonation, which indicates limited vocabulary mastery and weak phonological awareness. Internal factors such as lack of confidence, low motivation, and limited vocabulary were found to hinder performance. External factors, including an unsupportive learning environment and minimal practice opportunities, also contributed to students’ difficulties. In conclusion, students' ability to read aloud still needs significant improvement through regular practice, vocabulary enrichment, and teacher support in creating a conducive and engaging classroom atmosphere. This research is expected to provide input for teachers in designing reading activities that emphasize pronunciation, fluency, and expression to help students build confidence and improve overall English proficiency.
