Abstract

Competition between e-commerce makes each platform compete with each other's strategies. Not wanting to be less competitive with its competitors, Lazada created a sales feature via live streaming in 2019. This feature is called LazLive which is expected to be able to increase the number of sales or transactions at Lazada. In fact, the number of transactions and sales at Lazada is at the bottom compared to its competitors. Especially with the momentum of Harbolnas 12.12 2023, of course this momentum is an opportunity for business owners to maximize their sales. A person's desire to buy a product is influenced by assessments originating from word-of-mouth activities. The purpose of this research is to determine the influence of the intensity of watching live streaming sales (LazLive) on Lazada and word of mouth activity on buying interest on Lazada. The theories used in this research are Cognitive Response Theory and Traditional Word Of Mouth Communication Theory. This research used a sample of 60 people aged 18-55 years who had watched, heard, and carried out word of mouth activities both online and offline about LazLive and lived on the island of Java. The sampling technique for this research uses non-probability with a purposive sampling method approach. The research results show that there is a significant influence on the variable intensity of watching live streaming sales (LazLive) on Lazada (X1) on buying interest on Lazada (Y), a significance value of 0.001 is obtained, where this figure is smaller or less than (<) 0.05 with a regression coefficient of 0.098. Likewise, for the word of mouth activity variable (X2) on buying interest at Lazada (Y), a significance value of 0.000 was obtained, where this number is smaller or less than (<) 0.05 with a regression coefficient of 0.080, which means it is significant and there is an influence.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the communication process between parents and children in making decisions regarding the choice of a study program in higher education. In the family context, educational decisions often involve complex discussions between parents and children, where topics like the child's interests, career aspirations, and future become key points of discussion. This study uses an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach to explore the subjective experiences of children and parents during this communication process. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four parent-child pairs who are currently or have already gone through the process of selecting a study program in higher education. The research findings indicate that the communication style of parents, such as authoritative or democratic styles, has a significant impact on the final decision. Moreover, factors such as parental expectations, the child's interests, as well as social and cultural pressures also influence the dynamics of communication. Children involved in open communication with their parents are more likely to choose study programs that align with their own interests, while in cases of authoritarian communication, the decision is more often determined by the parents. These findings emphasize the importance of openness and support in the educational decision-making process within the family environment. This research also offers practical implications for families and educational institutions in improving more effective and supportive communication between parents and children.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to explain the experience of cross-cultural environment adaptation in international students and what makes international students able to overcome the crisis. The phenomenon of adaptation in a cross-cultural environment is an interesting phenomenon to study because cultural barriers are some of the things that most often cause international students to fail to complete their studies abroad. Many people who are in a new environment face culture shock, which is believed to be a normal condition. However, the level of disturbance experienced by the individual can differ from one person to another. This study uses two concepts, namely u-shaped curve and cross-cultural adaptation theories. The u-shaped curve concept has four stages of adaptation process namely honeymoon phase, crisis, recovery, and adjustment Moreover, the cross-cultural adaptation concept believes that individuals’ capacity for communicating in accordance with new cultural norms and values depends on their ability to change or adapt. It is made up of three crucial elements namely acculturation, deculturation, and assimilation. Each informant is able to be identified with a different process of cross cultural adaptation. There are three findings in this study. First, u-shaped curve theory may not prove for a number of adaptation processes in general. Second, international students undergo different processes of cross-cultural adaptation in cross-cultural environments. Third, what makes international students overcome the crisis include several strategies.

The focus of this study is the subjective experiences of tattoo owners who experience stigma, prejudice and discrimination from family, social environment, or work. This study uses Symbolic Interactionism Theory which examines how the meaning of tattoos is constructed through social interactions which then give rise to stigma, prejudice and discriminatory actions against tattoo owners. The interpretive paradigm used in this study is Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) which helps researchers to explore in depth the personal experiences of informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six individuals who have permanent tattoos on their bodies from various social and cultural backgrounds. The results of the study showed that male tattoo owners are often perceived with criminal acts such as drug addicts, pickpockets, being rude, thugs. Female tattoo owners are associated as bad women and naughty women. In addition, dynamics of change in the social environment were found before and after having a tattoo. Tattooed individuals experience prejudice and discrimination after they have tattoos on their bodies. Manifestations of prejudice are manifested through marginalization in the workplace, as well as exclusion in everyday social interactions.

Abstract

Indonesia is the sixth most orphaned country in the world. Not only orphans, many children grow up without parents due to divorce, economic deprivation, and neglect by their biological fathers and mothers. Living without the role of parents makes children experience many difficulties in forming a positive self-concept due to the lack of communication and direction from parents as the first group of children. Many children without the role of parents end up living in orphanages in order to continue their lives properly. This study aims to understand the communication experience of children without the role of parents in the formation of self-concept in orphanages. This research was conducted using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method with in-depth interview techniques to five children without the role of parents who are foster children in orphanages. This research draws on Mead's theory of symbolic interactionism self-concept. The results of this study show that children without the role of parents can still have a positive self-concept as they grow by establishing good interpersonal communication with caregivers in orphanages. The two-way communication model and the effectiveness of interpersonal communication between the two parties can make children still feel valuable and worthy of a bright future even without the role of parents. The child's self-image is also formed from the positive view of the environment towards the child. Even so, there are still communication barriers that arise in orphanages. The most common barriers experienced are semantic barriers in the form of language differences and psychosocial barriers resulting from past trauma.

Abstract

In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic spread throughout the world. Various efforts have been made to resolve the pandemic, one of which is the Covid-19 vaccine. The Republic of Indonesia Governments made a statement that the public required to receive 2 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine and 1 booster dose. The emergence of the Covid vaccine has caused many pros and cons in society, given that the Covid vaccine is a new thing and there is a lot of confusing information about the vaccine. Although information and invitations for vaccines have been widely circulated, there are still people who refuse to be vaccinated. This study aims to determine the relationship between the intensity of reading Covid-19 news in the mass media and the intensity of receiving the Covid-19 Vaccine Word of Mouth information with public attitudes regarding the Covid-19 Vaccine. The theory used in this theory is the dependency theory of mass media effects and the theory of the buyer's information environment. The population in this study was the people of Central Java aged 18-25 years who were healty and ready to get the Covid-19 Vaccine. This study uses a non-random sampling method by means of purposive sampling. The results of the Kendall Tau-B analysis test show that there is a correlations between the intensity of the Covid-19 Vaccine news and the attitude of the Covid-19 Vaccine community, namely with a significance number of 0.224. Meanwhile, the results of the hypothesis test for the variable intensity of receiving Word of Mouth information with public attitudes regarding the Covid-19 Vaccine show a significant relationship of 0.449. The conclusion from the results of this study is that there is a relationship between reading the news and people's attitudes about the Covid-19 vaccine. This is because in times of crisis such as a pandemic which causes access to information from the media to be higher and information from the mass media can provide affective, cognitive, and behavioral effects for the audience. Then the word of mouth information is also related to public attitudes about vaccines. WoM information is believed to be easier to accept because there is no affiliation and occurs naturally, so WoM plays a role in disseminating information related to vaccines and is used as a basis for the community before using the Covid-19 Vaccine.

Abstract

Abstract

This study was conducted to understand the interpretation of millennial parents in Semarang City regarding gender performativity in the film "Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku." Gender performativity based on Judith Butler's perspective views gender as non-binary, where individuals may enact their gender differently over time based on their experiences and contexts. This qualitative descriptive research used Stuart Hall's reception analysis method to discover the audience's reception towards gender performativity in “Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku” and John Fiske's semiotic analysis to identify the preferred readings offered by "Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku”. The result revealed that (1) Tolerance towards gender diversity can be accepted by the public to achieve gender inclusivity. (2) Audiences encountered certain limitations in accepting gender performativity due to conflict with their cultural and religious beliefs (3) There is a correlation between the individuals’ background and their acceptance towards gender performativity. The research findings indicate that the audiences' backgrounds shape their receptions towards media (film).
