Abstract

Background: Occupational skin diseases account for approximately 80% of contact dermatitis cases. Contact dermatitis can occur in various types of occupations, including scavenging. A preliminary study conducted at the Talang Gulo Landfill, Jambi City, in 2020 found that 7 out of 10 scavengers experienced symptoms of contact dermatitis. This study aimed to determine factors associated with contact dermatitis symptoms among scavengers at the Talang Gulo Landfill, Jambi City. Method: This was an analytic observational study using a cross-sectional design. A total of 62 respondents were recruited using accidental sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and the chi-square test (95% CI; p-value = 0.05). Result: The univariate analysis showed that 67.7% of scavengers reported symptoms of contact dermatitis. Bivariate analysis using the chi-square test showed significant associations between contact dermatitis symptoms and age (p-value = 0.019), gender (p-value = 0.000), personal hygiene (p-value = 0.000), use of personal protective equipment (PPE) (p-value = 0.015), duration of contact (p-value = 0.000), and frequency of contact (p-value = 0.010). Meanwhile, no significant associations were found for years of service (p-value = 0.083) and education level (p-value = 0.515). Conclusion: In conclusion, age, gender, personal hygiene, PPE use, duration of contact, and frequency of contact were significantly associated with contact dermatitis symptoms among scavengers at the Talang Gulo Landfill, Jambi City, whereas years of service and education level were not..

Abstract

Foodborne disease refers to a condition when the body is affected by microbial toxins or substances that enter through the consumption of food. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that around 1 in 10 individuals worldwide fall ill and experience 420,000 fatalities annually due to foodborne illnesses or food poisoning. Additionally, these incidents result in a loss of 33 million years of healthy life each year. The objective of the study is to assess the ambient and personal hygiene conditions and their impact on the presence of harmful microorganisms in food during culinary excursions in Kanggano Rajo. This study was employed a quantitative research approach with a descriptive design and a cross-sectional research design. The study population consists of 101 individuals engaged in the street vendors culinary items during the Culinary Tour of Tanggo Rajo. The findings indicated that 68.5% of the respondents needed to fulfill their hygiene preferences. Additionally, study was reported unsuitable environmental sanitation conditions, 57.4% reported inadequate water condition, 77.8% reported improper waste handling, 81.5% reported inadequate waste disposal, and 100% reported insufficient vector control. The microbiological test results revealed the presence of Enterobacter Hafniae in 2 samples, enterobacter aerogenes in 16 samples, and Klebsiella Azaenae in 36 samples. Empowering and enhancing education in all critical sectors is advisable while ensuring effective monitoring and evaluation.

Abstract

Abstract

Waste Management is one of the courses in the environmental health specialization. So far, the learning process in waste management courses has only relied on face-to-face methods (teacher centered learning), thus making students less active and creative and independent in understanding the problems and phenomena that occur. One learning model that can actively involve students and increase student creativity is Project Based Learning (PjBL). The aim of this research is to design and develop project-based learning and to increase student creativity and learning outcomes. This research was conducted at the Department of Public Health, Jambi University on fifth semester students specializing in environmental health with a total of 77 students. This research design is qualitative classroom action research. Data collection was carried out in the pre-cycle and cycle I and cycle II. The results showed that the average creativity of students in cycles I and II was 74.3%, flexibility 73.1%, welfare 79.2% and authenticity 81.6% and the average learning outcome for all groups was 83.2% .. Conclusion Based on the research results obtained, the execution of learning using the PjBL model in cycles I and II has gone smoothly, the creativity value of students has increased from quite creative to creative creative, the value of learning outcomes resulting from projects in cycles I and II has increased, the results of interviews with Students showed a positive response that with the implementation of the PJBL learning model, students were more active in asking questions and concentrating more during lectures.
