Abstract

This study discusses the social functions of speech in pregnancy myths within the Javanese community of South Malang through a sociolinguistic perspective. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of social functions found in pregnancy myth utterances and the sociolinguistic meanings contained within them. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques consisting of observation, interviews, and documentation. The research data were in the form of oral utterances delivered by mothers, grandmothers, elders, husbands, and traditional birth attendants to pregnant women. The results of the study indicate that pregnancy myth utterances have four social functions, namely educational, regulative, protective, and cultural inheritance functions. The protective function is the most dominant because most utterances contain prohibitions and advice aimed at protecting pregnant women and unborn babies from physical, psychological, and spiritual risks. Pregnancy myth utterances reflect the close relationship between language, culture, belief systems, and the social life of the Javanese community in South Malang, which has been passed down from generation to generation.

Abstract

The rapid growth of tourism in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) has created new economic opportunities for the Tengger community while simultaneously posing challenges to the preservation of local cultural values. One of the major issues is the limited capacity of local youth to document and communicate their own cultural narratives through audiovisual media. This community service program addressed this issue by implementing Kelas Sinema, a community-based documentary filmmaking training program in collaboration with Lingkaran Space and Shelter Kopi Bromo in Sukapura, Probolinggo. The program employed the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach integrated with the Participatory Video (PV) method to strengthen local capacities through participatory learning. The activities consisted of community asset identification, documentary filmmaking training, interactive discussions, practical audiovisual exercises, and program evaluation. The training introduced participants to visual language, documentary storytelling, cinematography, and community-based cultural documentation. The results indicate that participants demonstrated increased knowledge and skills in documentary film production, stronger awareness of the importance of preserving Tengger culture through audiovisual media, and active engagement throughout the learning process. The program also fostered collaboration among local communities and strengthened the role of documentary filmmaking as a medium for cultural education, community participation, and sustainable cultural preservation in the TNBTS area.

Abstract

Abstract

The rapid development of social media has expanded public interaction while increasing the occurrence of hate speech in digital communication. This study examines hate speech directed at Inara Rusli in the comment section of Denny Sumargo’s podcast account (@CURHAT Bang Denny Sumargo). It aims to identify the forms of speech acts used in hate speech and analyze the types of hate speech along with their linguistic indicators from a forensic linguistics perspective. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data consisted of netizens’ comments containing hate speech, collected through observation, reading, and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed using the interactive analysis model involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Speech act analysis was based on John Searle’s (1979) Speech Act Theory, while hate speech was examined using forensic linguistics. The findings reveal three forms of speech acts, namely expressive, directive, and assertive, with expressive speech acts dominating in the form of criticism, blame, and condemnation. Four types of hate speech were identified: insult, defamation, provocation, and stigmatization. These were realized through words, phrases, and sentences containing pejorative lexical items, negative labeling, accusations, and imperative constructions. The study concludes that these linguistic features function as linguistic evidence representing speakers’ attitudes while constructing negative public images of the target, contributing to the development of forensic linguistics research on hate speech in social media.

Abstract

This study examines the main character’s search for identity in Tere Liye’s novel Sendiri (2024) through the lens of Carl Gustav Jung’s psychoanalytic theory. The research addresses the lack of in-depth psychological analysis regarding how the protagonist confronts inner conflict, loneliness, and past trauma in the process of identity formation. The study aims to describe the forms, strategies, and obstacles in the character’s identity quest, as well as to analyze the individuation process based on Jungian concepts such as persona, shadow, anima/animus, and the Self. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, utilizing close reading and thematic analysis of textual data from the novel. Findings reveal that the protagonist undergoes a complex, nonlinear psychological journey toward self-understanding, triggered by existential crisis and emotional isolation. Through deep introspection, symbolic interactions (particularly with natural elements like the moon), and confrontation with the shadow, the character gradually integrates fragmented aspects of the self. This study demonstrates that Jungian theory effectively uncovers the psychological depth of characters in contemporary Indonesian literature and affirms the relevance of literary fiction as a medium for reflecting on identity formation and emotional resilience in real life.

Abstract

This study examines the variations in diction used to depict the figure of a mother in Indonesian song lyrics themed around mothers through a semantic approach. The background lies in the close relationship between language, culture, and identity, where diction serves not only as a communication tool but also reflects social values and the sacred role of mothers, encompassing boundless love, selfless sacrifice, and moral strength. However, representations of mothers in song lyrics are often homogeneous, leading to issues such as reinforcing gender biases and mismatches with the evolving roles of women in modern society. The objective is to describe the form, functioins, and meanings of these diction variations. Employing a qualitative descriptive analytic method, data were sourced from Indonesian songs from the 1970s to the 2020s, such as Ibu by Nasida Ria, Ibu Ibu Ibu by Pidi Baiq, Keramat by Rhoma Irama, Muara Kasih Bunda by Erie Suzan, Doa Ibu by Armada, Ibu by Iwan Fals, Pesona Potretmu by Ada Band, Bunda by Melly Goeslaw, Terima Kasih by Jayadi, Ibu by Haddad Alwi feat Farhan, Ibu Aku Ingin Bersandar by Nabila Maharani, Mama Kaulah Bintang by Romaria, Nyanyian Rindu untuk Ibu by Ebiet G. Ade, Bertaut by Nadin Amizah. The analysis is based on Gorys Keraf’s diction theory and Abdul Chaer’s semantics, with data collection techniques involving documentation and note taking, validated throught triangulation. Results indicate that forms of diction variations cover physical aspects (such as biological sacrifices), psychological emotional aspects (such as care and deep bonds), and social aspects (such as religious hierarchies). Their functions act as symbols of love, narrative drivers, an moral theme reinforcers, while meanings include fields of affection with sacred components, synonym and metaphor relationships, and connotative spiritual shifts. The conclusion asserts that these diction variations are not merely artistic but serve as ideological tools for maternalism, reflecting Indonesia’s cultural values. With implications for literary and semantic studies. Future research is recommended to compare with international song lyrics for a comparative perspective.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the construction of social criticism discourse in the song lyrics "Durmagati Dadi Mentri" by Kajawi using Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis framework. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with listening and note-taking techniques as data collection instruments. Analysis was conducted across three dimensions: text structure, social cognition, and social context. Findings reveal that at the text structure dimension, discourse is constructed through an accumulatively built theme of bureaucratic moral degradation, an organized ironic narrative schema, and stylistic strategies comprising krama-ngoko register contrast alongside irony-based rhetorical devices. At the social cognition dimension, the creator manifests critical awareness of systemic leadership failure while grounding his creation in Javanese cultural values as a moral foundation. At the social context dimension, the song functions as an instrument of resistance against unequal access to public discourse amid escalating post-reform political distrust. It is concluded that these lyrics constitute a cultural artifact of high ideological density and significant socio-political relevance.
