Abstract

In this community service project, tutoring will be highlighted. Tutoring is used in this activity to provide students with a range of perspectives on the knowledge they have learned as a consequence of their own experiences with their surroundings. Students contribute significantly to the development of thinking abilities through their use of language in scientific papers. The approaches used in this service activity include explanation and practice. This is because students' understanding and writing abilities are limited, making it harder for them to produce scientific articles. One aspect of student development is the development of the capacity to write scientific articles. This capability is immediately obvious in well-structured writing. The findings of this study show that students were able to write scientific papers as a consequence of this service, allowing them to grow and think creatively while finishing their studies through the production of scientific papers, and that students are proficient at writing scientific papers.

Abstract

This study investigates grammatical and lexical cohesion in Indonesian EFL undergraduates’ argumentative essays and examines how cohesion relates to writing quality. A small learner corpus of 15 timed essays was manually coded for reference, articles, conjunctions, and lexical reiteration following Halliday and Hasan’s framework, and rated with an analytic rubric. Descriptive statistics and Spearman correlations were complemented by qualitative analysis of higher- and lower-rated texts. Quantitative results show frequent use of articles, basic conjunctions, and lexical repetition, but cohesion indices display weak, sometimes negative, associations with overall and coherence scores. Qualitative findings reveal that stronger essays are characterised by stable reference chains, a wider range of logical connectives, and purposeful lexical reiteration, whereas weaker texts rely on broken chains and mechanical repetition. The study argues that cohesion quality, rather than quantity, is more salient for raters and discusses implications for genre-based EFL writing instruction.

Abstract

This study investigates the English learning profiles of non-English major students, specifically those enrolled in Accounting and Management programs at a private university in Indonesia. A descriptive quantitative research design was employed involving 53 Students (24 Accounting, 29 Management), capturing students’ self-perceived English proficiency, learning barriers, motivations, learning preferences, and strategies. The findings indicate generally low self-perceived English proficiency across both groups, with 58.3% of Accounting students and 75.9% of Management students classifying themselves at the beginner level.. The study identified common learning barriers such as limited vocabulary, technical challenges (e.g., grammar and pronunciation), and a lack of supportive learning environments. In terms of motivation, Management students exhibited a stronger focus on global communication, while Accounting students prioritized career-related goals. Both groups favored informal and interactive learning strategies, with a preference for watching English-language films, using language learning applications, and practicing with peers. These findings suggest incorporating informal digital learning tools, such as language learning applications and audiovisual media, alongside peer-supported collaborative activities into ESP curricula to better align instruction with students’ demonstrated learning preferences.
