Abstract

Technology-based language learning, particularly Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL), is increasingly utilized to support autonomous learning. However, limited research has explored how Duolingo contributes to metacognitive awareness and learning autonomy among non-English major students in Indonesia. This study aims to analyse the impact of Duolingo on these two variables and to explore the relationship between them. Using a mixed-methods approach with a quasi-experimental design, 56 non-English major students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Buton participated in the study. Quantitative data were analysed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Spearman Rank correlation, while qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis. The Wilcoxon test results indicated a significant increase in metacognitive awareness (p < 0.001) and learning autonomy (p < 0.001), with a strong positive correlation between them (r = 0.72, p < 0.001). Interviews revealed that Duolingo’s gamification features, such as streaks and leaderboards, helped students become more aware of their learning strategies and more independent in their learning process. This study demonstrates that Duolingo not only facilitates language learning but also enhances students' autonomy and metacognitive awareness.

Abstract

The Bugis language, belonging to the Austronesian family, serves as a crucial element of cultural identity and heritage for the Bugis ethnic group in Indonesia, particularly in Sinjai City. However, like many indigenous languages, Bugis faces challenges in preservation due to socio-cultural factors. This research delves into preservation efforts and sociolinguistic dynamics surrounding the Bugis language since 2000, aiming to provide insights for stakeholders. Drawing on qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews and ethnographic observations, this study aims to explore the motivations driving preservation efforts, investigate the role of education, examine socio-cultural factors influencing language use, and assess the effectiveness of existing preservation strategies. Findings reveal that cultural identity maintenance, intergenerational transmission, and the desire to safeguard linguistic diversity are primary motivations. Education emerges as pivotal, though hindered by the dominance of Bahasa Indonesia and limited institutional support. Socio-cultural factors like urbanization, migration, media influence, and linguistic stigma further challenge preservation. Strengths of current strategies include community engagement and cultural affirmation, while limitations include lack of support and linguistic stigma. Recommendations for augmenting preservation efforts include advocating for policy reforms, community empowerment, digital resources, and promoting multilingualism. Ultimately, preserving the Bugis language entails a holistic approach that honors cultural diversity and empowers the Bugis community.

Abstract

This research delves into the intricacies of imperative politeness within the Kaledupa dialect of the Wakatobi language (KDWL), focusing on both its forms and influencing factors. By employing a descriptive qualitative approach from a pragmatic perspective, the study meticulously gathers data through observation, moderate participatory recording, and note-taking techniques. The findings indicate that politeness in KDWL imperatives is manifested through several linguistic features: the length of utterances, the structuring of speech where non-imperative information often precedes the imperative command, variations in intonation, and the use of kinesic signals such as gestures. These elements combine to create a nuanced system of politeness that is sensitive to the context in which the imperative is delivered. Moreover, the study identifies a range of social and cultural factors that influence how politeness is expressed in KDWL imperatives. These include power dynamics and social status, which dictate the level of formality and deference required; kinship and social relationships, which influence the degree of familiarity or respect in the language used; and group membership and gender, which further modulate the appropriateness of certain forms. Additionally, the nature of the speech situation, the role of customary institutions, and adherence to cultural norms play significant roles in shaping polite imperatives. Indecisiveness also emerges as a factor, suggesting that the speaker’s confidence can impact the politeness strategy employed. Together, these findings underscore the complex interplay between linguistic and social elements in the KDWL, providing a comprehensive understanding of how politeness is constructed and maintained in this linguistic community.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of women’s empowerment policies in the maritime Bajo community of Wakatobi Regency and to formulate a gender-responsive policy model based on local wisdom. The background of this study lies in the high rate of extreme poverty in Wakatobi, which reached 15.01 percent according to BPS (2022), as well as the strategic role of Bajo women who bear multiple burdens as household managers and family economic supporters. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with Bajo women leaders, village officials, and non-governmental partners. The findings reveal that empowerment programs such as the Family Hope Program (PKH), micro-business skills training, and small-scale capital schemes have been implemented, yet remain largely consumptive-oriented and have not sufficiently enhanced sustainable capacity. The main barriers identified include low education levels, limited local government resources, and strong patriarchal culture, while supporting factors are the presence of local female leaders, social solidarity among women, and support from non-governmental organizations. Analysis using the Van Meter and Van Horn model produced a framework for a more gender-responsive policy implementation that emphasizes policy standard refinement, resource strengthening, participatory communication, active involvement of women, and adaptation to local wisdom. This study concludes that empowering Bajo women requires inclusive, participatory, and locally grounded policies to improve family welfare while strengthening the social position of women in coastal communities.

Abstract

This study investigates how Duolingo can serve as a supplementary tool for English learning among non-English major students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Buton, focusing on students in the Faculty of Economics. The research aims to understand students’ perceptions of Duolingo’s effectiveness and the challenges they face when using the app beyond the classroom. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative data gathered from 120 first-year students over a six-week period. Quantitative data, collected through surveys, measured students’ usage patterns, motivation, and engagement levels, while qualitative data from open-ended responses provided insights into specific challenges and motivations related to Duolingo’s gamified features, such as XP, leaderboards, and levels. The findings indicate that Duolingo’s gamification elements contributed to increased motivation and engagement, particularly among students balancing academic and personal commitments. However, students faced challenges, including limited internet access, time constraints, and difficulty with advanced vocabulary and grammar. This study concludes that Duolingo is an effective supplementary tool for enhancing language learning outside the classroom, though additional support may be required to address connectivity issues and advanced language content.

Abstract

In this community service project, tutoring will be highlighted. Tutoring is used in this activity to provide students with a range of perspectives on the knowledge they have learned as a consequence of their own experiences with their surroundings. Students contribute significantly to the development of thinking abilities through their use of language in scientific papers. The approaches used in this service activity include explanation and practice. This is because students' understanding and writing abilities are limited, making it harder for them to produce scientific articles. One aspect of student development is the development of the capacity to write scientific articles. This capability is immediately obvious in well-structured writing. The findings of this study show that students were able to write scientific papers as a consequence of this service, allowing them to grow and think creatively while finishing their studies through the production of scientific papers, and that students are proficient at writing scientific papers.
