Abstract

Seagrass ecosystems play a crucial role in maintaining coastal environmental stability, yet their presence in Pahawang Island shows a declining trend due to human activity pressures and changes in aquatic conditions. This study aims to describe the structure of the seagrass community and analyze its correlation with environmental parameters at four stations with different characteristics. Seagrass data collection was conducted using the transect-quadrant method to measure coverage, density, and species composition, while environmental parameters observed included temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), current, and water clarity. The results showed the presence of three seagrass species, namely Enhalus acoroides, Thalassia hemprichii, and Halodule uninervis, with varying coverage and density across locations; the best condition was found at the natural station and the lowest at the pier area. The diversity index was classified as low, while uniformity and dominance varied according to human activity levels around the water. PCA analysis indicated that salinity, current, clarity, DO, pH, and temperature contribute differently at each station and collectively influence the variation in the seagrass community. These findings emphasize that differences in environmental quality and the intensity of anthropogenic disturbances are key factors determining the condition of the seagrass beds in Pahawang Island.  Keywords: Seagrass, Water Quality, Community Structure, PCA, Pahawang Island

Abstract

This study examines shoreline dynamics in the Banyuasin Estuary, South Sumatra, Indonesia, by integrating multi-decadal satellite imagery (1989-2019) with field-based sedimentation measurements. The research employs Google Earth Engine (GEE) for satellite data processing, FES 2014 tidal corrections to address tidal variations, and the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) for precise shoreline change analysis. The primary objective is to comprehensively understand coastline shifts and sediment deposition in stabilising coastal zones. The findings reveal significant shoreline accretion, with net accretion of 2,012 hectares and prominent shoreline advancements at Anakan Island (2,012.33 meters, 118.98 meters/year), while regions such as Sembilang National Park and southern Payung Island exhibited notable erosion (322.71 meters, 10.8 meters/year). The Banyuasin River estuary shifted from notable to extreme accretion phases, contrasting with the more stable shoreline dynamics in the Musi River estuary, where accretion remained stable to intense. The integrated methodology, combining GEE, tidal corrections, and DSAS, offers an innovative approach to monitoring shoreline changes. These findings provide valuable insights for developing sustainable coastal management strategies, particularly in areas facing the dual challenges of climate change and human-induced pressures.

Abstract

Despite the ecological and economic significance of coral reefs, quantitative data on how water quality parameters regulate zooxanthellae density in anthropogenically impacted tropical reefs remain limited. This study investigated the influence of water quality parameters on zooxanthellae density in branching corals at Pahawang Island, Lampung, Indonesia, across four stations representing different levels of human disturbance: dock area (Station 1), floating net cages area (Station 2), recreational area (Station 3), and a relatively pristine area (Station 4). Coral fragments were collected by SCUBA diving at 2–5 m depth, and zooxanthellae were extracted by homogenization followed by centrifugation, with cell density quantified using a hemocytometer under light microscopy. Physical and chemical water quality parameters were measured in situ using a CTD profiler, while nutrient concentrations were analyzed according to SNI protocols. Zooxanthellae density ranged from 16,822 to 22,227 cells/cm², indicating a healthy symbiotic status across all stations. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified dissolved oxygen (5.5–6.4 mg/L), depth (2.20–4.10 m), and water clarity (2.0–3.0 m) as the primary environmental drivers of zooxanthellae density variation, while temperature, pH, and salinity remained stable and within coral-suitable ranges. Hydrodynamic conditions and oxygen availability, rather than nutrient enrichment, appear to be the dominant regulators of zooxanthellae density at this site. These findings highlight the need for site-specific management strategies that prioritize maintaining dissolved oxygen levels and water circulation, and provide a scientific basis for developing zoning policies in coral ecotourism areas of Pahawang Island to ensure long-term reef ecosystem health.

Abstract

The Sungsang area in the Musi River estuary is an important fishing ground that is potentially exposed to zinc (Zn) contamination due to intensive anthropogenic activities. This study aimed to analyze Zn accumulation in mantis shrimp (Harpiosquilla raphidea) and to evaluate its consumption safety. Samples were collected from local collectors and analyzed using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry in accordance with SNI 2354-13:2014. The results showed that Zn concentrations ranged from 20.24 to 21.27 mg/kg, with an average of 20.70 mg/kg, remaining below the maximum permissible limit established by Dirjen POM (1989). Risk assessment based on estimated intake indicated that Zn exposure from mantis shrimp consumption is within safe limits for humans. Overall, these findings confirm that mantis shrimp from Sungsang are safe for consumption with respect to Zn contamination. This study provides scientific evidence for food safety assessment and underscores the need for continuous monitoring of heavy metal contamination to support sustainable coastal resource management.

Abstract

The leaves of R. stylosa are a potential source of bioactive compounds for health and pharmacology. The composition of bioactive compounds in the leaves can be influenced by the ecological conditions and geographical location of this small island. This study aims to evaluate the toxicity and composition of bioactive compounds that are toxic in mangrove leaf extracts of R. stylosa from Maspari Island in coastal South Sumatra. A total of 1 kg of R. stylosa leaf samples were taken from Maspari Island then washed thoroughly to remove dirt, cut into small pieces, and dried in the sun using the indirect sunlight method covered with black cloth. The dried leaf samples were then pulverized into powder, and as much as 100 grams of fine powder was macerated with 96% ethanol solvent in a ratio of 1:10 (b/v). The maceration process was carried out for 1 x 24 hours, then the maceration solution was filtered and evaporated using a rotary evaporator at 60°C to become a concentrated extract. Toxicity tests were carried out using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method, while the identification of toxic bioactive compounds was carried out through phytochemical tests, total phenol tests, and GC-MS analysis. The test results showed that the LC50 value of R. stylosa leaf extract was 393 mg/mL (moderately toxic). The total phenol content was 442.82 (gGA/g), and the bioactive compounds identified included alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, terpenoids, and acids such as Hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester, and trans-13-Octadecenoic acid, methyl ester.

Abstract

Water quality in the form of turbidity, colour, odour, taste and suspended residue are significant issues in Sungsang Banyuasin. The filter utilizes a filtration method to remove solid particles and contaminants. The research site consists of Sungsang, Sungsang II, and Sungsang III areas. The purpose of this study was to determine the water quality in the form of colour, taste, odour, turbidity, suspended residue, and salinity, as well as the ability of the filter to overcome water quality. Filtration consists of sedimentation, filter membranes, and filter media consisting of zeolite, silica, anthracite, ferrolite, activated carbon, and bioring. Water quality measurements used organoleptic to determine odour and taste, handrefractometer to measure salinity, direct reading to measure suspended residue, and spectrophotometry to measure colour and turbidity. The breech water was odourless and tasteless, and the suspended residue value ranged from 17-19 mg/L below the quality standard of 50 mg/L. Colour and turbidity values are greater than 50 on their respective scales and salinity values range from 11-13 ppt. The filtration process successfully reduced the values of suspended residue, colour, turbidity, and salinity.
