Abstract

This study aims to analyze gender discrimination reflected in novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. This study reveals kinds of gender discrimination as reflected in the novel and how the gender discrimination affects characters as reflected in the novel. This study employed feminist approach. The writers only focused on analyzing gender discrimination issue limited on woman. The results show that the kinds of gender discrimination found in the novel were natality inequality, mortality inequality, household inequality, special opportunity inequality, and professional inequality. The effect of gender discrimination covered physical problems, psychological problems, impact on women’s family and dependent, and impact on social.

Abstract

 The present study aims to describe the students’ obstacles in learning English and their strategies in learning English at the senior high school. This study employs qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and interviews to get the naturality of the data. The study was conducted at SMA -Al -Ikhlas and SMA Negeri 8 Lubuklinggau, involving twenty students from both schools. The results indicate that many students of both schools have obstacles in learning English on pronunciation, understanding meaning and grammar.  Their learning strategies include social strategies, cognitive strategies, and meta-cognitive strategies.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to develop the English reading materials in textbook used for students at Senior High School in Lubuklinggau, and to describe the efficacy of instructional design of reading materials for Students at Senior High School in Lubuklinggau. The Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 5 Lubuklinggau was the sample of this research. In addition, this research applied an Educational Research and Development (R & D) by using a simplified six steps of Borg and Gall’s model. The six steps were: (1) collecting the research information,(2) planning and drafting the data of research, (3) developing the data of research based 2013 curriculum combined with the result, (4) giving tryout (field testing) to the 11th grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Lubuklinggau, (5) evaluating the English reading materials by the experts, and (6) producing the final product (English reading materials in textbook). The findings of this research showed that the English reading materials in textbook that were developed in this research fulfilled the criteria of R & D model. The instructional design as the specific English reading materials was very important and useful to support the students’ reading activities that put not only building the intensive practice for reading comprehension, but also linking to grammar, enriching the vocabulary, and applying the students’ knowledge. Moreover, through the English reading materials in textbook, the students could use it with the suitable and the valuable materials, and they must be motivated to increase their reading proficiency.

Abstract

The problem of this study was ”What are the icons, indexes, and symbols in Get Out  movie?”. There were primary sources and secondary sources in this study. The primary source used in this study was Get Out movie while the secondary sources were several books, journals, and articles to support this study. The objective of this study was to describe the icons, indexes, and symbols in Get Out Movie by using Charles Peirce's theory. This study used descriptive qualitative research. In collecting the data, the writer used library research, in which the writer went to find desirable references consisted of books, journals, and articles. In analyzing the data, the writer identified and classified the data first, then the writer did some reduction to the data. The writer only chose relevant data in several key scenes in the movie which were contributive to the plot and removed the redundant and unnecessary ones. After conducting the study, the writer found out that there were thirty signs in Get Out movie. The result showed that the thirty signs found in the movie were classified into three icons, twenty indexes, and seven symbols.
