Abstract

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach in education through a systematic literature review. TaRL is a teaching method that is tailored to the individual abilities of learners. It ensures that every learner receives an education that is appropriate to their ability level. This review analyzed articles from academic journals published between 2018-2024, obtained through Google Scholar with the keywords “Teaching at the Right Level”, ‘TaRL’, and “learning evaluation”. The review was supported by the inclusion criteria of articles addressing the implementation and evaluation of TaRL, while opinion articles and unpublished reports were excluded. Based on the search results, 18 relevant articles were obtained. The results of the analysis show that the TaRL approach is effectively applied in science learning at the elementary, junior high and high school levels. This approach is proven to be able to improve learning outcomes, motivation, activeness, and communication skills of students. The success can be seen through various forms of evaluation and learning strategies that are systematically applied in the research cycle.

Abstract

The evolution of inquiry-based learning has reached a critical juncture where traditional Western-centric approaches prove insufficient for culturally diverse educational contexts, creating an urgent need for innovative assessment methodologies. This study addresses a fundamental gap in educational research: the absence of specialized instruments capable of evaluating pedagogical innovations that transcend conventional inquiry learning limitations through systematic cultural knowledge integration. We present the development of a comprehensive assessment framework specifically designed for the KESAN (Konektivitas Etnosains-Sains) learning model, representing a revolutionary advancement from classical inquiry through guided inquiry to synthetic epistemological integration. Using Educational Design Research (EDR) methodology, we systematically developed five specialized instruments that collectively address critical evaluation gaps: (1) Content Assessment Instrument for evaluating dual-epistemological curriculum integration; (2) Construct Validation Instrument for assessing theoretical coherence in synthetic investigation approaches; (3) Teacher Practicality Instrument for measuring implementation feasibility of culturally-sustaining pedagogy; (4) Student Practicality Instrument for evaluating identity-affirming learning experiences; and (5) Communication and Implementation Framework for systematic deployment and research dissemination. This research represents the first systematic attempt to create assessment tools specifically designed for evaluating educational innovations that achieve authentic cultural knowledge integration without compromising scientific rigor

Abstract

This study examines the level of entrepreneurial interest among Physics Education students, with a specific focus on ethnophysics as a potential source of innovation in the Society 5.0 era. Using a quantitative descriptive design, the study involved 75 students from three cohorts (2022–2024) enrolled in a Physics Education program at a public university in Padang, Indonesia. Data were collected through a 20-item Likert-scale questionnaire (1–4) adapted from an established entrepreneurial interest instrument and contextualized for physics and ethnophysics, complemented by brief structured interviews to enrich interpretation. The instrument demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability (Cronbach’s α = .82). Descriptive analysis revealed that students’ entrepreneurial interest was predominantly in the high and moderate categories: 42% (n = 31) were classified as high and 39% (n = 29) as moderate, while 13% (n = 10) and 6% (n = 5) were classified as low and very low, respectively. No students reached the very high category. The mean score was 67.88 (SD = 7.64) on a possible range of 20–80, with a median and mode of 70. These results indicate strong potential for developing ethnophysics-based entrepreneurship initiatives that combine cultural heritage and physics concepts into products with both cultural and economic value. However, reported barriers—including limited confidence, fear of failure, and insufficient institutional support—suggest the need for curricular strengthening, skills training, and the development of an entrepreneurship ecosystem within the university. The findings contribute empirical evidence to inform the design of adaptive entrepreneurship education in physics teacher preparation programs.

Abstract

This study is a systematic literature review (SLR) that maps trends in research and development (R&D) using inquiry-based approaches in science learning. The review protocol was prepared a priori, and reporting follows PRISMA 2020, with procedures adapted from Kitchenham and Charters’ systematic review guidelines. In the context of 21st-century education and the growing use of digital learning, inquiry-based learning has been promoted as a way to cultivate higher-order thinking and scientific practices. The mapping synthesis draws on 43 eligible studies and shows that inquiry models are widely used to guide students in investigating problems through structured questioning, experimentation, and evidence-based reasoning.

Abstract

The use of learning media in science education is increasingly important to improve students' learning competence and motivation, yet there is still a gap in the understanding of the effectiveness of strategic media management. This study aims to explore the role of learning media management in improving students' competencies as well as understanding the influence of students' preferences for learning media on their learning motivation. This study used a quantitative design with a survey method. The sample consisted of 54 junior high school students in North Sumatra Province who were selected using the convenience sampling method. Data were collected through an online survey covering four main constructs: teachers' learning media management strategies, students' science competencies, students' preferences for learning media, and students' learning motivation. Data analysis was conducted using SmartPLS (V.4) software to test the validity and reliability of the research instruments and SPSS (V.26) to analyze the relationship between variables through multiple regression analysis (univariate; ENTER model). The results showed that effective management of learning media, especially in visualizing complex concepts, had a significant influence on improving the procedural aspects of students' competence, although the influence on conceptual understanding was still limited. In addition, students' preference for relevant, engaging, and contextualized media was shown to positively influence their motivation, especially in the aspects of active engagement and learning comfort. These findings highlight the importance of interactive and strategic media design and the need for teacher training in maximizing the use of learning media. The implications of this study include the development of educational policies that support the integration of student preference-based learning media and the increase of teachers' capacity to manage media effectively to improve student learning outcomes.
