Abstract

Multimodality has been studied in relation to a variety of text genres, but it has yet to be used to textbook covers. This paper is aimed at examining the representational meaning of visual resources in the covers of selected English textbooks and how the verbal and visual modes strengthen each other’s meaning. This is a qualitative research that uses a multimodal discourse analysis paradigm. Visual and verbal data were gained from two covers of selected English textbooks. The analysis includes representational meaning (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006), text generic structure (Cheong, 2004),  and intersemiotic complementarity (Royce, 2007). The findings indicate that the representational meaning consists of  narrative and conceptual representations within the structures of   lead, display, announcement and emblem. Through the relationships of repetition, synonymy, and meronymy, verbal and visual modes help each other build cohesiveness. The cohesion signifies the relation between visual images and  verbal texts to convey meaningful messages of the covers. Certain implications were also elaborated in this study.

Abstract

This research was conducted because it was discovered that students had difficulty learning vocabulary, especially adjectives, and it was set against the background of several student problems. For instance, utilizing continuous paper-based learning to teach vocabulary resulted in boredom and could demotivate students. Dealing with that, one alternative solution was provided to the problem by implementing the memrise media to be tested in the learning process toteach adjectives. The research objective was to know the effectiveness of using memrise towards students' adjective mastery. Thus, this research used a quasi-experimental design and chose two classes by using cluster random sampling as the sample. The research instrument was tests, the results of which were analyzed using an independent sample t-test. The hypothesis testing results revealed that a significant value of 0.025 was obtained with a significance of α = 0.05. Thus, there was effectiveness in using memrise application toward students' adjective mastery. Furthermore, the N-Gain score for the control class was 0.46, while for the experimental class was 0.58. Abstract

Speech is part of the communication process, and this communication is effective if the message delivered by the speaker can be received precisely as it exists in the speaker's mind. This study aims to identify the move and step’s rhetorical elements, commonly taught in public speaking courses. This study's research design was qualitative design. 20 speeches from English education students in the University of Bengkulu public speaking course served as the research object. Using an adapted model. In this study, researchers used the checklist method as a research instrument. The frequency and steps of agreement in this study were determined manually. This study was analyzed by tabulating frequency data and providing examples of the moves and steps seen in the video. It was found that 2 moves had a frequency of 100% and 3 steps of 12 steps analyzed had a frequency of 100%. The moves are Introduction and Content. Steps with a frequency of 100% are Greeting the audience, Hortatory/narration, and presenting an argument. Meanwhile, 3 steps with a 90% - 95% frequency are announcing the topic, suggestion, and thanking. There are 2 steps that never appear in this study: outlining structure/indicating scope and describing a process/series of events. In this study, the researchers concluded that 2 moves and 3 steps were found with a frequency percentage of 100%, and 3 steps were found with a frequency percentage of 90% - 95%. Abstract

Adolescence is a critical period marked by significant physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional changes. In Indonesia, adolescent’s aggression is a problem influenced by various factors, such as internet addiction, poor emotional regulation, anxiety, peers influence, and parenting styles. Therefore, during this period, relationships with peers become increasingly important as young people strive to be independent and have a sense of belonging. The study population of 238 people was obtained through an initial questionnaire collected on July 25, 2024 - August 20, 2024. The use of covariance-based SEM with parametric assumptions that the research variables must meet the assumption of a normal multivariate distribution. However, the research variables did not meet the assumption of normality, so Partial Least Square (PLS) was used. The hypothesis testing method used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS 4.00 software. The dynamics of Muslim adolescent aggression, especially the relationship between peer religiosity and aggression, is a multifaceted topic. General research shows that religiosity acts as a protective factor against aggression and delinquency among adolescents. However, peer influences and social context can significantly modulate this relationship. Keywords: Aggression, Religiosity, Peer Religion, Structural Equation Modeling

Abstract

This study aims to analyse organic waste compost as an effective growing medium and evaluate its effect on the growth of pakcoy (Brassica rapa var. Chinensis) plants. In this study, we focused on analysing the content of macro and micro nutrients required by pakcoy plants, such as C, N, P, K, and Ca. We used a Randomised Group Design (RAK) with two factors: growing media (sawdust, cocopeat, husk charcoal) and organic waste compost concentration. The observation parameters include the development of pakcoy plants, namely plant height, number of leaves, and stalks of pakcoy that have been planted in organic waste compost media. The results showed that organic waste compost with a mixture of sawdust and the addition of EM4 has a nutrient content that is in accordance with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). In addition, the organic waste compost had a more significant effect on pakcoy growth. Thus, this study shows the potential of using organic waste compost as an alternative to chemical fertilisers in vegetable cultivation. These results can help improve soil fertility and yield of vegetable crops, as well as contribute to the development of sustainable agriculture that is more environmentally friendly.

Abstract

This study focuses on the design and implementation of a collaborative learning model aimed at enhancing reading comprehension among first-year students at the Institute of Public Administration (IPDN) in Indonesia. The model was specifically developed to address challenges in a higher education boarding school environment, including limited access to technology and the transition to online learning. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 141 students organized into small groups of 3-4 members, mixing higher and lower achievers to encourage diverse interactions. The study examines how this model promotes student engagement, independence, and collaborative problem-solving skills—key components for lifelong learning. Data collection involved online questionnaires, interviews, and reading comprehension tests, which were analyzed using thematic coding and descriptive statistics. The results demonstrate significant improvements in reading comprehension, expanded vocabulary related to government concepts, and the emergence of student leaders who facilitated group learning. Additionally, the model was well-received by students, enhancing their independence and fostering a collaborative learning environment. The findings emphasize the potential of this model to support lifelong learning by developing essential skills that extend beyond the classroom, thereby promoting both academic achievement and personal growth.
