Abstract

Abstract

The Polyculture Caulerpa sp and Litopenaeus vannamei can reduce the risk of ecological impacts, increase shrimp growth, survival, production, increase shrimp resistance to disease, and maintain optimal water quality. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) begins by determining the priority between water quality, growth rate, and harvest yields as more optimal parameters for the success of a polyculture. The measure of success is determined based on the results of expert assessments of polyculture and cultivation that produce more optimal water quality (temperature, pH, brightness, salinity, and dissolved oxygen), growth rates, and harvest yields. The results of the overall AHP analysis, which determined the success of Caulerpa sp and Litopenaeus vannamei polyculture based on expert assessments, showed a good level of consistency. The results show that water quality is a priority parameter in the success of Caulerpa sp and Litopenaeus vannamei polyculture with a weight of 0.597, followed by a growth rate of 0.297 and a harvest yield of 0.106. The analysis of priority water quality indicators for the success of polyculture is dissolved oxygen with a weight of 0.514, followed by pH of 0.246, salinity of 0.119, temperature of 0.079, and brightness of 0.042. Based on the results of experts of the combined weight comparison, polyculture is more optimal than cultivation, with a considerable comparison weight of 0.678 and 0.322, measuring the success of Caulerpa sp and Litopenaeus vannamei polyculture.

Abstract

Central Tapanuli Regency is a region that has significant potential in the fisheries sector, mainly traditional fisheries, due to its extensive mangrove ecosystem and lengthy coastline. Mangroves are essential for the livelihood of local fishing, as they protect the marine environment and serve as a barrier against coastal erosion. The mangrove ecosystem in Central Tapanuli Regency is experiencing increased pressure due to land conversion, illicit logging, and other human activities, as research surveys indicate. This pressure has a negative impact on the productivity of catches and the welfare of fishermen. This risk is undoubtedly a significant concern; the ecological value of the mangrove ecosystem may be diminished, resulting in a decrease in the catch of local trap fishermen. Consequently, this research is necessary for the local government to reference when developing mangrove management strategies. This investigation aimed to assess the state of the mangrove ecosystem in Tapian Nauli Bay and the correlation between mangrove conditions and the socio-economic status of crab trawl fishermen. The investigation was conducted in Central Tapanuli, specifically in Tapian Nauli Bay. Surveys and interviews with respondents were implemented to accumulate data. Descriptive and correlational analyses are implemented. The results of this study indicated that 60% of the mangroves in Tapian Nauli Bay were in excellent condition, while only 30-40% were in poor condition. The income of bubu fishermen is significantly influenced by the presence of mangroves, as the catches they capture increase, thereby improving their livelihoods.

Abstract

The spawning process of carp (Cyprinus carpio) can be done naturally or artificially. However, fecundity and fertilization from spawning are still quite low. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out artificial spawning through hormonal applications using pituitary techniques to stimulate and accelerate ovulation and spawning of parent fish and is able to increase fecundity, hatching rate and quantity of fish fry. The pituitary gland of crab-eating frog (Fejervarya cancrivora) has several endocrine glands whose job is to produce hormones to regulate and control body tasks, stimulate, and activate reproductive tissue. This study aimed to test the most effective dose of crab-eating frog's pituitary gland to increase the fecundity and hatching rate of carp. The method used was the experimental method consisting of four treatments of crab-eating frog’s pituitary gland doses, namely P1 (0 mL kg-1), P2 (0.3 mL kg-1), P3 (0.5 mL kg-1), and P4 (0.7 mL kg-1) with three replications. The data obtained were analyzed statistically using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that the most effective dose for increasing fecundity and hatching rate of carp was 0.5 mL kg-1. The highest fecundity was 85,516.51 ± 2,110.94 eggs with a hatching rate of 76.87 ± 1.33%. The use of low doses resulted in the hormone not reaching sufficient concentrations to stimulate the desired reproductive response. On the other hand, doses that are too high can cause overstimulation of the fish's reproductive system, which in turn can disrupt the hormonal balance due to toxicity.

Abstract

Most of the Central Tapanuli Regency area is on the coast, which is part of the Indian Ocean waters and has great potential in the fishing industry, especially marine fisheries. One of the fishing gears widely used by fishermen in Central Tapanuli is the gill net. Although the amount of marine fisheries resources in Central Tapanuli is quite abundant, the catch of gillnet fishermen often fluctuates, so fishing aids are needed to increase catches, one of the efforts made is using LACUBA. This research was conducted from February to April 2024 in Sibolga Bay, Central Tapanuli. This study used a completely randomised design (CRD), with the first 30 metres of gill net treatment with LACUBA and the remaining 30 metres without LACUBA treatment with a total net length of 60 metres. The results showed that the catch of gill nets using LACUBA influenced the catch, the total catch was 16,845 grams, without LACUBA 8,290 grams for 14 times. Gill nets with LACUBA can increase catches compared to without LACUBA, due to the addition of attractants to the net, so that fish including positive phototaxis will be caught in the net, besides that fish that are looking for prey are also caught because they want to prey on their food in the gill net area.

Abstract

The Kutaraja Ocean Fishing Port (PPS Kutaraja) is one of the largest fish landing sites in Banda Aceh, playing a significant role in shark fisheries, particularly for thresher sharks (Alopias pelagicus). This study aims to describe the thresher shark fishery at PPS Kutaraja, assess the status of its utilization, and provide recommendations for sustainable management. The research was conducted through direct observations, interviews with fishermen and fishery business operators, and secondary data analysis. The results indicate that thresher sharks are primarily caught as bycatch using purse seines and longlines. The shark trade at PPS Kutaraja involves multiple stakeholders, from fishermen and intermediaries (toke bangku) to domestic and international markets. Habitat and ecosystem assessments reveal that seagrass and coral reef ecosystems along the Aceh coast are in moderate condition, while mangrove ecosystems remain relatively well-preserved. The composite evaluation of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) for habitat and ecosystem aspects scored 66.67, categorized as "good." However, the lack of data on key shark habitats, such as spawning, nursery, and feeding grounds, highlights the need for further research. To ensure sustainability, ecosystem-based management strategies, including establishing conservation areas and stricter monitoring of shark fishing practices, are recommended. Implementing effective policies will support the long-term sustainability of thresher shark fisheries at PPS Kutaraja.

Abstract

The purse seine fishery in Sibolga plays a vital role in fish production but faces challenges regarding compliance with licensed fishing ground regulations. Non-compliance, driven by economic pressure and declining fish stocks, threatens resource sustainability and fishermen’s welfare. This study aimed to analyze fishermen’s perceptions and compliance levels regarding the use of licensed fishing areas and their relationship to regulatory enforcement. The research was conducted from January-March 2024 at Sibolga Archipelago Fishing Port, North Sumatra, one of the main landing bases for purse seine vessels. Data were collected from 115 respondents, consisting of vessel captains and mates, using structured questionnaires and direct interviews. Observations and secondary data from fisheries institutions supported the primary data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the non-parametric Kruskal–Wallis test to determine differences in perceptions and compliance among fishing groups categorized by vessel tonnage and fishing zones. The results showed that fishermen’s perceptions of potential fishing grounds and fish resource availability were relatively uniform across groups, indicating a shared view that fishing effort continues to expand to secure catches. In contrast, perceptions of VMS usage differed significantly, with the 30–100 GT small pelagic purse seine group acknowledging its role in detecting violations. Compliance levels also varied, with the 30–100 GT small pelagic purse seine operating in <12-mile zones showing the lowest compliance. It is concluded that stricter enforcement, effective monitoring, and targeted empowerment programs are necessary to enhance compliance and ensure sustainable fisheries management in Sibolga.

Abstract

Lift-net fishermen in Gampong Lhok Layeun, Leupung Sub-district, Aceh Besar District, still use mercury lamps which are energy-intensive, require high operational costs, and are less effective in attracting fish. This condition leads to low profits for fishermen. To address this problem, a community service program was conducted in the form of training and assistance in the development of underwater light emitting diode (LED) as an alternative technology that is more energy-efficient and effective. This activity aimed to enhance fishermen’s capacity in mastering appropriate technology and reducing fishing operational costs. The program was held on August 23–24, 2025, at the Layeun Village Office Hall, involving 15 fishermen, three lecturers, and three students from Universitas Syiah Kuala. The implementation method applied an applicative and participatory approach through several stages: preparation, training, hands-on practice, and evaluation. Participants received materials on the concept and advantages of underwater LED, followed by direct assistance in assembling the devices and conducting simple trials. The results showed an increase in fishermen’s understanding of the differences between lighting technologies as well as their ability to assemble underwater LED devices independently. Fishermen expressed their readiness to adopt this technology because it is more energy-efficient, reduces operational costs, and has the potential to increase fish catches. In conclusion, this program successfully improved fishermen’s knowledge and skills in utilizing underwater LED technology, which can serve as an alternative solution to enhance the welfare of coastal communities and support sustainable fisheries resource management.
