Abstract

Abstract

This study observes the linguistic diversity of a community to find out the cultural inheritance for the next generation in Wajo Regency, South Sulawesi. The objectives of this study are to describe the meaning of the kinship system in Bugis society in the marriage custom, second to describe the inheritance system of the perception of To Ugi in Wajo district, South Sulawesi, and third to describe the nickname “To Ugi” in the kinship system. A descriptive qualitative approach was used to investigate data sources by describing the symptoms arising from the meaning of To Ugi in the Bugis Society in Wajo District, Tempe. Research data were collected from observation and interviews with four informants, one of whom was a Wajo traditional leader. The results showed that the Bugis-Wajo kinship system found 10 series of traditional processions, forbidden marriages, the main standards of the family that have to be followed when people enter marriage, and the stages before marrying based on the word assiajingeng. Kinship in Wajo is classified as parental by following the social system of the father and mother or the lineage of both parents. The 2:1 cultural inheritance sharing system between men and women benefits those who do not understand the kinship laws in Wajo Regency. The contribution of this study is that it opens up further opportunities for exploration into the relationship between language, social structure, and the formation of social classes within traditional communities, as well as the potential integration of local wisdom into character education and sustainable development.

Additionally, it aims to deepen visitors' and the community's understanding of cultural literacy by highlighting the diverse potential and traditions surrounding Pentungan Sari, as well as to improve cultural literacy and educational facilities for local residents, particularly students at the kindergarten to junior high school levels in Toyomarto Village. The benefits gained from this community service include: (1) economic benefits that can open up opportunities for the Toyomarto community to revive village MSMEs regarding Toyomarto's signature products. With the reestablishment of local MSMEs, it will add value to the community's economy, thereby enabling the community to become independent and prosperous. (2) Cultural benefits, which are expected to promote Toyomarto's unique cultural products, from cultural literacy materials to tangible products, thereby becoming an attractive destination for tourists, (3) Economic and strategic benefits for the image of the Toyomarto village government, which is expected to serve as an alternative for the broader community to promote literacy.

Abstract

The publication of scientific works is a crucial aspect in the development of knowledge and career advancement, especially for teachers. Teachers are not only expected to teach, but also to produce scientific works that contribute to the development of science. Although important, many teachers are reluctant to publish because it requires time, energy, and adjustment to scientific journal standards. However, according to Minister of National Education Regulation No. 35 of 2010, publishing scientific works is a requirement for promotion to a higher rank, such as from Grade IVa to IVb. The challenges teachers face in publishing include a lack of information about relevant journals, difficulties in using submission systems like Open Journal System (OJS), and the limited number of journals managed by teachers themselves. Universities play a crucial role in supporting and assisting teachers by providing information, training, and technical assistance related to scientific publications. This community service program was conducted over three months (July–September 2023) and consisted of the following stages: (1) Establishing communication with the Indonesian Language Teachers' Association (MGMP) of Trenggalek District, (2) Collecting articles (84 articles were submitted via Google Forms), (3) Selecting articles, (4) Reviewing articles, (5) Conducting a scientific article writing training session (on July 25, 2023, attended by 60 participants), and (6) Preparing teachers' scientific articles for publication. This program is not only expected to provide tangible benefits for teachers in developing their publication skills but also to strengthen partnerships between universities and schools in efforts to improve the quality of education and research. Abstract

The tradition of carrying setaman flowers in the nyekar rite success to be a part of local wisdom that has survived through various periods, but on the other hand, documents about it are still limited.  This study aims to describe the lexicons in kembang setaman in the nyekar rite from the Javanese perspective. Adopting qualitative  method with a focus on ethnographic approach, data is collected through interview and literature study and examined using semiotic and lexical-semantic analysis. The result show seven plants that make up the setaman, including (1) roses (mawar or mawi-arsa, a sincere intention to live up to noble values), (2) jasmine (melati or melat ing ati, the sincerity of the heart), (3) white chrysolite flower (kanthil or tansah kumanthil-kanthil, uninterrupted devotion), (4) ylang (kenanga or kenangen ing angga, always remembering the ancestral heritage), (5) tuberose (sedap malam or harum dhalu, always remembering the sacred teachings of the ancestors even in the dark of the night), (6) rose balsam (pacar air or pacar banyu, prosperity continues to flow), and (7) pandan leaves (liaison with the deceased). Kembang setaman functions as a symbol of gifts accompanied by prayers sent when visiting graves which are considered homes for people who have died, and contemporary Javanese society is still carrying out this tradition. This research expands the limited field of Anthropolinguistics studies, and on the other hand, can be used as cultural documentation that encourages the intention to better conserve the local wisdom over a long period.
