Abstract

Dates are cultivate as a staple food in many countries, especially in the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, and the Middle East. Dates fruits and date seeds as their by-products have nutritional and health values. It is an abundant source of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and protein. They are high-source minerals and B complex vitamins, such as thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenate (B5), pyridoxine (B6), and folate (B9). Based on literature studies, the fruit and seeds of dates are also rich in phytochemicals, such as phenolics, anthocyanins, carotenoids, tocopherols, tocotrienols, and phytosterols. However, date fruits and seeds have not been fully utilized as functional food ingredients with numerous potential to be developed into foods that promote health benefits. Several studies have reported the health benefits of dates in in-vitro and in-vivo conditions. Further research will provide valuable information for the potential utilization of date fruit and seeds as nutritional and functional food ingredients. This review article provides comprehensive information on the bioactive compounds and nutraceutical properties of date fruits and seeds, as well as their potential for use as functional food ingredients.

Abstract

Peningkatan pengetahuan lansia diukur menggunakan metode one group post-test and pre-test.

Abstract

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and citronella (Cymbopogon nardus L.) are flagship crops cultivated by farmers in Jatijejer Village. Lemongrass is commonly used as a culinary spice, while citronella is widely utilized for producing essential oil rich in citronellal, geraniol, and citronellol. The essential oil from citronella has high economic value due to its applications in the cosmetics and health industries. This community service activity aims to enhance local farmers' understanding and skills in proper lemongrass cultivation and the potential processing of essential oils as value-added products. The program focuses on strategies to optimize agricultural potential using proper cultivation techniques with organic farming systems based on smart farming technology. Farmers were educated on the stages of lemongrass cultivation, including land preparation, planting, crop maintenance, fertilization, pest and disease control, as well as harvesting and post-harvest handling. Participants were given pre-tests and post-tests to assess their understanding. The test results showed a significant improvement in participants' comprehension of proper lemongrass cultivation using smart farming methods, as well as the benefits and processing of essential oils. This activity successfully raised awareness of the importance of innovation in the agricultural sector and laid the foundation for the development of local businesses based on natural resources.

Abstract

Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic used to treat psychosis, mainly as a second choice for patients with refractory schizophrenia and recommended to manage schizophrenia that does not respond to other therapies. Clozapine is also often associated with elevated transaminase levels without clinical symptoms. In this case, a 45-year-old man, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia since October 2020, was undergoing treatment with various antipsychotic drugs, including clozapine. About a week before hospitalization, there was a change in the patient's behavior. Due to this condition, the patient was brought to the outpatient psychiatric clinic at Airlangga University Hospital Surabaya, the patient was given clozapine 25 mg therapy at night, but the symptoms experienced were getting worse. The patient was finally taken for hospitalization at Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya. While undergoing treatment at the hospital, the patient was given clozapine 10 mg therapy in the morning and at night, in addition, Olanzapine 10 mg was given intramuscularly if needed. However, on the third day after starting treatment, the patient began complaining of low-grade fever (37.8°C), nausea, and fatigue. Laboratory tests showed an increase in liver enzyme levels. However, several cases of severe liver toxicity due to clozapine use have been reported, and there are no specific guidelines for physicians to prevent or treat this condition. Close monitoring of liver function test (LFT) results is crucial in clozapine therapy, especially in considering the decision to stop treatment early if necessary.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a condition characterized by elevated blood glucose levels beyond the normal limits. One therapeutic approach for managing diabetes mellitus involves inhibiting the α-glucosidase enzyme, which plays a role in glucose absorption in the body. However, the use of oral antidiabetic drugs from the α-glucosidase inhibitor class often causes gastrointestinal side effects. Therefore, exploring natural materials as alternative treatments is a promising option. In Indonesia, one plant with potential as an alternative treatment is sintok (Cinnamomum sintoc Blume), a member of the Cinnamomum genus, which is widely utilized in traditional medicine for chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to evaluate the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of a water extract of sintok bark. Preliminary tests were conducted to determine the optimal conditions for measuring α-glucosidase enzyme inhibition activity in vitro using a UV- vis spectrophotometer. The results showed optimal enzyme activity at a wavelength of 405 nm, an incubation time of 40 minutes, and a substrate concentration of 12.5 mM. The water extract of sintok bark exhibited the highest inhibitory activity at a concentration of 5 ppm, with an inhibition value of 28.66%, while acarbose, used as a positive control, achieved the highest inhibition value of 96.36% at a concentration of 4.5 ppm. In conclusion, the aqueous extract of sintok bark demonstrates inhibitory activity against the α-glucosidase enzyme, indicating its potential as a natural antidiabetic agent.
