Abstract

Poverty is the social-human problem in Indonesia and in the world. Pesantren with its social capital was able to take a role for that encourages social change towards a better direction. This study is a critical study on the role of pesantren in the mobilization process of social values and norms so that it was able to make social change in the perspective of social capital. The result of the study shows that through its social capital, such as social networking and trust, pesantren was able to break through the backwardness of society into a better society. In fact, the direction of social change conducted by pesantren which is integrating the religious values with the various dimension of social lives, and based on the spirit then supported by the principle of trust, empirically all of these become the powerful basis for the professional relationship.

Abstract

Religious moderation was an important value in the life of modern society. The article aimed to anayze the practice and implications of religious moderation in Indonesian Islamic boarding schools based on theo-anthropocentric values. This research was qualitative field research with a phenomenological approach. The source of the research data was Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia and taken by representatives of the regions of East Java and Southeast Sulawesi as one of the largest Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia. The research participants were 30 people including, the leaders of the pesantren, the caretakers of the pesantren, and the students of two major Islamic boarding schools in East Java. Data collection was done by interview technique. The data analyst follows a procedure that begins with data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. This result showed three main keys to the practice of religious moderation. First, the practice of moderation was in harmony between technology or theory and its application in the field. Second, the moderation attitude in the pesantren and its environment could prevent the emergence of radicalism. Third, this moderation practice also fosters and forms a tolerant and democratic attitude toward all the differences that exist. The results of this study could serve as a simple guide in applying of diversity moderation in other areas. The existence of limitations on the validity of the data and the depth of analysis was a note that needs to be completed in the future. Abstract

This study focused on the phenomena or dynamics of the struggle for religious ideology that occur in the educational institutions (SMP/MTs and SMA/MA) of Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama in East Java. Therefore, this study sought to see the internalization of the religious ideological values of Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama in their education systems. Especially, when looking at clashes of religious thought that contain other ideologies (such as transnational (Salafi, Wahabi, and Shia), conservative/traditional, and reformist/modernist ideologies). This study used a qualitative approach and techniques for data collection used participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The data analysis used the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model consisting of four stages, namely, data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion. This study found that the educational institutions of Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama have paradigmatic similarities, namely, ideology is positioned and functionalized as the motive and legitimacy of their educational actions and religious privileges. The expanding opportunities for dissemination and reproduction of other ideologies in their educational institutions are due to the very open nature of their religious understanding (Muhammadiyah has an understanding of Islamic Manhaji, and Nahdlatul Ulama has an understanding of Islamic mahzabi). Riset ini memfokuskan pada fenomena atau dinamika pergulatan ideologi keagamaan yang terjadi di kelembagaan pendidikan (SMP/MTs dan SMA/MA) Muhammadiyah dan Nahdlatul Ulama di propinsi Jawa Timur. Karenanya, riset ini berupaya melihat internalisasi nilai-nilai ideologis keagamaan Muhammadiyah dan Nahdlatul Ulama dalam sistem kependidikannya. Terutama ketika melihat benturan-benturan pemikiran keagamaan yang memuat ideologi lain (seperti ideologi transnasional (Salafi, Wahabi, dan Syi’ah), konservatif/tradisional, dan reformis/modernis). Riset ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data memakai observasi partisipasi, wawancara mendalam; dan studi dokumentasi. Analisis datanya memakai model Miles, Huberman, dan Saldana yang terdiri dari empat tahap, yaitu: koleksi data, kondensasi data, display data, dan kesimpulan. Riset ini menemukan, kelembagaan pendidikan Muhammadiyah dan Nahdlatul Ulama memiliki persamaan paradigmatik, yaitu: ideologi diposisikan dan difungsionalisasikan sebagai motif serta legitimasi tindakan kependidikan dan privelege keberagamaan mereka. Pembentangan peluang diseminasi dan reproduksi ideologi lain di kelembagaan pendidikan mereka, disebabkan sifat pemahaman keagamaan mereka yang sangat terbuka (Muhammadiyah berpahaman Islam Manhaji, dan Nahdlatul Ulama memiliki pemahaman Islam mazhabi).

Abstract

The congregation of Asy-Syari'ah Mosque in Malang City exhibits a strong interest in understanding the Qur'an as a life guide, yet they face challenges in finding an effective study method to address social-contemporary issues. This article reports on a community service project aimed at enhancing the congregation's understanding of the Qur'an through mentoring using the thematic exegesis (maudhu'i) method. The project was conducted as a series of regular study sessions over seven weeks, employing a participatory and collaborative approach that involved the mosque's management board. The findings indicate that the thematic exegesis method was highly effective and well-received by the congregation. Participants found it easier to comprehensively understand the Qur'an's content, obtain timely solutions to life's problems, and even those unable to read the Arabic script could grasp its substance. Furthermore, the project successfully fostered high learning motivation, as evidenced by active participation and the emergence of informal discussion groups. It is concluded that the thematic method is a superior approach for Qur'anic learning at the community level, owing to its relevance to practical needs and its accessibility. This approach is therefore recommended for broader implementation across various institutions, both religious and non-religious, to 'ground' Qur'anic studies and make them more accessible to all segments of society. Keywords: Thematic Exegesis, Qur'anic Understanding, Community Service, Mosque Congregation, Religious Literacy Jamaah Masjid Asy-Syari'ah Kota Malang memiliki minat yang besar untuk memahami Al-Qur'an sebagai pedoman hidup, namun menghadapi kendala dalam menemukan metode pengkajian yang efektif untuk menjawab problematika sosial-kontemporer. Artikel ini melaporkan hasil kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman Al-Qur’an di kalangan jamaah melalui pendampingan dengan menggunakan metode tafsir tematik (maudhu’i). Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan dalam bentuk pengajian rutin selama tujuh pekan dengan pendekatan partisipatif dan kolaboratif yang melibatkan takmir masjid. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa metode tafsir tematik sangat efektif dan diminati oleh jamaah. Mereka merasa lebih mudah memahami isi Al-Qur’an secara komprehensif, lebih cepat mendapatkan jawaban solutif atas persoalan kehidupan, dan bahkan mereka yang belum mampu membaca teks Arab pun dapat memahami kandungannya. Kegiatan ini juga berhasil menumbuhkan motivasi belajar yang tinggi, yang ditandai dengan partisipasi aktif dan lahirnya kelompok-kelompok diskusi informal. Disimpulkan bahwa metode tematik merupakan pendekatan yang unggul untuk pembelajaran Al-Qur'an di tingkat masyarakat umum karena relevansinya dengan kebutuhan praktis dan kemudahannya. Pendekatan ini direkomendasikan untuk diterapkan secara lebih luas di berbagai lembaga, baik keagamaan maupun non-keagamaan, untuk membumikan kajian Al-Qur'an agar lebih mudah diakses oleh semua kalangan. Abstract

The existence of Islamic boarding school students is considered to have an essential role in guarding religious moderation amidst the increasing issues of radicalism and religious extremism in Indonesia. This research aims to understand the construction and implications of religious moderation based on theological and sociological values developed at the Miftahul Ulum Suren Islamic Boarding School, Jember, and the Nurul Jadid Paiton Islamic Boarding School, Probolinggo. This research method is qualitative with a case study approach. Data collection techniques are carried out through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of the research show that the construction of religious moderation at the Miftahul Ulum Suren Jember Islamic Boarding School and the Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo Islamic Boarding School, is carried out through the instillation of theological and sociological values, namely the aqidah ahlus sunnah wal jamaah and the habit of good morals towards Allah and others. The internalization of these theological and sociological values has implications for the character of students who love their country and have national and national awareness, as evidenced by an attitude of tolerance between religious communities, maintaining harmony and national unity

Abstract

Prostitution is often called to be a social disease that is far from anchoring the values of religiousness, especially diversity. It is normal if the stigma of tilting towards sex workers arises from insults, mocks, until the behavior of ignorance shown by the clergy. Even though sex workers are outside the circle of prostitution, they are "giddy" looking for life's meaning in the form of religious feelings in which there is a sense of divinity. Therefore, this article tries to understand the reality of religion - in which there are also emerging of sex workers. The reality is analyzed using the theory of dramaturgy which divides prostitution into the front stage (the practice of prostitution) and the rear stage (the privacy of sex workers). This article uses a qualitative approach to the type of phenomenology that portrays the practice of ayam kampus prostitution in East Java. Data collection used in-depth interviews and participant observation; Data analysis used the interactive models of Miles and Hubermann. This research found that the front stage of the practice of prostitution has never been friendly with the presence of God, especially to express its diversity. But, on the back stage, they can expose themselves in their religiosity and divinity with full serenity and appreciation. The conclusions of this research is the religiosity practiced by sex workers is separated from the normative symbol of religion, while God is immersed tightly in their soul and God is present in the most subjective and impersonal form in him.

Abstract

This study focuses on the construction of the negative concept of divinity (theology) developed in the educational system such as madrasas or pesantren. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the construction of negative theology in the Islamic education system developed in madrasas or pesantren in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. To critically discuss the issue, this study used a qualitative approach with phenomenological research design and Miles and Huberman’s framework in analyzing the data. Study findings expose that negative theological discourse denoted an arena for the prophetization of divine values ​​whose style of expression was apophatic. Apparently, it constructs its theological knowledge as well as “rejects” the knowledge construction with the logic of negation and paradox. The implications for the Islamic education system are the framework of educational objectives is oriented to aspects of humanity and divinity; or the profane and transcendental dimension. It indicates that negative theology contributes to novel insights into the axiology of Islamic education

Abstract

AbstractEmbody an al-insan al-kamil is the ultimate aim of Islamic Education and philosophical Sufism. This human construction can be emerged through education that internalizes divine natures in the subject of education. Therefore, between Islamic educational philosophic has dialectical relation to embody human into “God”. Therefore, this article focused on the construction of Islamic education in realizing al-insan al-kamil (a complete man) which has similarities with the goals of philosophical Sufism. The aim is to analyze and understand the construction of human transformation efforts into "God" as the axiological orientation of Islamic education and philosophical Sufism. Hence, the current article used a qualitative approach with a literature review of research type to elaborate the focus. Meanwhile, the data analysis used was content analysis and interpretation methods. Islam that integrated to the aim of philosophical Sufism may encourage the born of ideal human beings (al-insan al-kamil). A human that has completeness in the aspects of intellectuality, emotional, and spirituality as the figure of caliph (khalifah) or Abdullah. This human model in the formulation of philosophical Sufism was a human who has “merged” with God; or human who transforms themselves into “God”. The practical implications of this research, Islamic education on the theological-philosophical dimensions must continue to unite axiological orientation (Islamic education and philosophical Sufism) to be applied in the process of Islamic religious learning.Abstrak Melahirkan al-insan al-kamil merupakan tujuan tertinggi (ultimate aim) dari pendidikan Islam dan tasawuf falsafi. Konstruksi manusia ini bisa dimunculkan melalui pendidikan yang menginternalisasikan sifat-sifat ketuhanan dalam diri subjek pendidikan. Karenanya, antara filsafat pendidikan Islam dengan tasawuf falsafi memiliki relasi dialektis untuk mewujudkan manusia menjadi “Tuhan”. Oleh sebab itu, artikel ini fokus pada konstruksi tujuan pendidikan Islam dalam mewujudkan al-insan al-kamil yang memiliki kesamaan dengan tujuan tasawuf falsafi. Tujuannya, untuk menganalisis dan memahami konstruksi upaya transformasi manusia menjadi “Tuhan” sebagai orientasi aksiologis pendidikan Islam dan tasawuf falsafi. Karenanya, artikel ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian kepustakaan untuk mengurai fokus dan tujuan riset tersebut. Sedangkan analisa data digunakan metode content analysis dan interpretasi. Artikel ini menyimpulkan bahwa proses mewujudkan tujuan pendidikan Islam yang diintegrasikan dengan tujuan tasawuf falsafi mampu mendorong lahirnya manusia ideal (al-insan al-kamil). Manusia yang memiliki kesempurnaan pada aspek intelektualitas, emosional, dan spiritualitas sebagai sosok khalifah maupun abdullah. Manusia model ini di dalam formulasi tasawuf falsafi merupakan manusia yang telah “menyatu” dengan Tuhan; atau manusia yang mentransformasi diri menjadi “Tuhan”. Implikasi praktis riset ini, pendidikan Islam pada dimensi teologis-filosofis harus terus menyatukan orientasi aksiologis (pendidikan Islam dan tasawuf falsafi) untuk diaplikasikan dalam proses pembelajaran pendidikan agama Islam.

Abstract

Konversi keberagamaan dalam diri individu merupakan realitas keniscayaan dalam menenguhkan keyakinan atas sistem agamanya. Begitu pula, dinamika keberagamaan yang penulis alami ini selama berjumpa dengan metodologis (manhaj) keberagamaan yang beragam. Penulis justru memasuki pada nuansa keberagamaan yang berbeda yang membawa pada kerangka transformasi metodologis keberagamaan. Ruang ini merupakan konversi keyakinan keberagamaan penulis dari keberagamaan tradisional yang penuh tradisi “slametan” dan sarat realitas geneologi pengetahuan keagamaan melampui linieritas ekskatologis menuju pada keyakinan keberagama yang puritan, progresif (berkemajuan), dan mengedepankan meritokrasi dalam keorganisasiannya. Tulisan reflektif ini merupakan preferensi personalitas penulis atas konversi keyakinan keberagamaan diri yang telah “meruang”. Dalam tulisan ini dideskripsikan suasana keberagamaan penulis pada saat berada di tradisi keberagamaan tradisional; bertemu dengan tradisi keberagamaan, hingga masuk dalam keberagamaan yang puritan dan progresif. Perpindahan ini dalam perspektif sosiologi agama masuk dalam kategori as preference (perpindahan pada metodologis atau perspektif keberagamaan dalam satu kerangka agama).
