Abstract

Background: The rising internet use among Indonesian university students has amplified the risk of cyberbullying, severely affecting their psychological well-being. This issue can trigger anxiety, depression, and self-harm. These psychological issues can lead to negative behaviors, such as appetite disturbance. Promoting awareness, online safety education, mental health support, and collaboration among institutions, families, and policymakers is crucial to creating a safer digital environment. Objective: This study examined the relationship between experiences of cyberbullying, psychological well-being, and appetite disturbance. Method: This study used a cross-sectional design with 700 undergraduate students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur, selected via proportional stratified and random sampling from January to March 2024. Participants spanned all academic years. Data were collected using self-administered standard questionnaires. The association between variables was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Ethical approval was granted by the Institutional Review Board IPSR, Mahidol University, Thailand, and participants received information sheets. Results: The result showed significant associations between cyberbullying experience and psychological well-being and between psychological well-being and appetite disturbance. No significant direct link was found between cyberbullying experience and appetite disturbance. Psychological well-being fully mediated the relationship between cyberbullying experience and appetite disturbance (p-value < 0.000). Coping capacity did not moderate the relationship between cyberbullying experience and psychological well-being. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study highlights the significant association between cyberbullying and psychological well-being and appetite disturbance. It suggests enhancing psychological well-being to mitigate these effects. Future research should refine the study design, expand the population scope, and explore positive coping strategies to improve psychological issues. Abstract

Introduction: Cyberbullying has become a burden in the current digital world and has an impact on health status, including physical and mental health. People try to mitigate these mental health issues through various coping strategies, including engaging in risky health behavior. Such risky health behaviors may have implications for future health status. Thus, this study aims to examine the prevalence of cyberbullying victimization and elucidate the consequences of cyberbullying victimization on psychological well-being and risky health behavior. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed in this study, with 700 undergraduate students as research participants. The students were randomly selected using proportional stratified and random sampling in a selected university in Samarinda, Indonesia, between January and March 2024. Participants were first-year, second-year, third-year, and fourth-year students. Self-administered data collection using a standard questionnaire for each variable. This study used the Structural Equation Model to analysed the associations between variables. Results: Cyberbullying victimization affects psychological well-being, which, in turn, influences risky health behaviors. While no direct link was found between cyberbullying and risky health behaviors, psychological well-being fully mediates this relationship. This suggests that the negative impact of cyberbullying on health behaviors occurs through its detrimental effects on psychological well-being, leading to risky health behaviors as coping strategies. Conclusion: The study reveals significant links between cyberbullying victimization, coping capacity, psychological well-being, and risky health behavior. These findings highlight the importance of effective coping strategies. Future research should focus on enhancing problem-focused coping techniques, which could serve as positive strategies to reduce the negative impact of cyberbullying on psychological health and risky health behaviors.

Abstract

Introduction: Overweight among adolescents in Indonesia is a growing public health issue, influenced by socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. Urbanization and economic disparities have contributed to increased consumption of calorie-dense foods and sedentary behaviors, particularly among adolescents from higher-income families. However, the role of economic status in shaping overweight risk remains underexplored. Objective: Examining socioeconomic disparities may influence the determinants of overweight in this population. Method: This cross-sectional study utilized secondary data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS), encompassing 9,977 Indonesian students aged 11–18. The analysis included descriptive statistics, bivariate tests, and binary logistic regression to identify associations between behavioral, demographic, and socioeconomic variables and overweight status. The analysis was stratified by economic level, using hunger frequency as a proxy indicator. Result: Overall, 14.7% of adolescents were overweight. Sedentary behavior was significantly associated with overweight in both low and high economic groups. Among adolescents from higher economic backgrounds, junior high school students had a higher risk of being overweight compared to senior high school students. In contrast, no significant associations were found between overweight and other behavioral factors in the low economic group, except for sedentary habits. Conclusion: Sedentary behavior is a key risk factor for adolescent overweight across economic strata, while school level influences overweight risk in wealthier adolescents. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions that address lifestyle behaviors and consider socioeconomic disparities to effectively combat adolescent overweight in Indonesia.
