Abstract

This study examines the natural phenomena on the development of lemma and meaning in the variety of languages used by adolescents on social media. Research design was done naturally through the process of observation, taking notes, and writing down the case. The qualitative research appears in the development of the entry which is easily found as a definite phenomenon of linguistic development. The data collection method was carried out by tracing data on the use of various languages on social media. To analyze the data, the researcher uses padan and agih methods. This method is to test the accuracy of classification on the types of language used by adolescents in social media in the development of the entry and or the development of the meaning of the entry. The results showed that the variety of languages on social media is very dynamic, developing, arbitrary, but conventional. The variety of languages indicates the development of new lemmas, acronyms, and walikan. The development of meaning is marked along with the development of the entry in the form of synonyms and the use of the Indonesian language entry in the form of a polysemic. Based on the results of this study, adolescents can be considered a productive period in exploring the language, through direct interaction or social media. Becoming actively productive in language exploration led to a potential for concepting a new lemma and a new meaning according to the context of language use. In addition, this development becomes one proof of the self-existence of adolescence, community characteristics, and also the need for the development of Indonesian vocabulary.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the potential of words as swear words through an ethno semantic study. This research differs from other swearing studies examining the form and meaning of swear words. This study presents the potential of words to become swear words. This research employs a phenomenological approach. Swear words are expressive words that convey emotions and are easily found in both oral and written forms, whether directly or on social media. The data collection technique for swear words is documentation. The steps in documentation include recording sentences that contain swear words and classifying them based on the characteristics of swear words. The analysis technique for swear words uses conceptual meaning analysis. Based on the classification of the data, the words are analyzed for their components of meaning, both lexically and in terms of meaning derived from cultural associations and societal thought. Thus, the findings reveal the potential of each lexical word to become a curse word using an ethno semantic approach. Through an ethno semantic study, two potentials exist for words to become swear words. First, conceptual meaning is added due to the speakers' ideas, thoughts, knowledge, and culture. Second, there is a loss of conceptual meaning in the form of functional components in the lexical meaning of a word.

Abstract

Indonesia is a multilingual country that has various ethnic languages based on its ethnicity and region. For that, maintaining the ethnic language is a crucial issue in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to portray fisherman children’s ability to read in the ethnic language (Madurese language) and investigate how the local Education policy supports the ethnic language of the fisherman community. The present study approach employed a mixed-method design. Sixteen (aged around 10 – 11 years old) Madurese children were involved in this study. Reading aloud, reading comprehension tests, and interview were used as the instruments in this study. The study was conducted within 3 weeks. The results of the study revealed that (1) the children's reading comprehension is much affected by the Madurese speech level (formal and informal) of vocabulary mastery and topics in the text. (2) children’s reading aloud was influenced by the L2 (National language) orthography system.  (3) the absence of teachers who can teach the Madurese language is the most prominent reason for not providing the Madurese Language as local content in the primary school. This study highlights the critical need for local government intervention to provide qualified Madurese language teachers in school to preserve and promote ethnic language literacy. Additionally, it underscores the importance of early childhood exposure to literacy practices in within language within the family environment.
