Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is a global health concern that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly among productive-age adults. This community program aimed to assess lipid profiles and enhance public awareness of healthy lifestyle practices as a preventive measure against metabolic syndrome. The activity was conducted at one private school, in Jelambar, West Jakarta using the Plan-Do-Check-Action (PDCA) approach, encompassing planning, biochemical screening, personalized education, and follow-up. Lipid profile assessments including total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides were performed using a point-of-care testing (POCT) method on 46 participants aged 20–63 (mean 42.36 ± 11.75 years). Results showed that most participants had normal lipid parameters: total cholesterol (67.4% normal), triglycerides (87% normal), HDL (100% normal), and LDL (91.3% optimal). Female participants had higher HDL levels, while males exhibited higher triglycerides, consistent with physiological variations influenced by sex hormones. The educational intervention effectively improved participants’ understanding of the relationship between dyslipidemia, diet, physical activity, and metabolic risk. This study highlights that combining lipid profile screening with healthy lifestyle education is an effective, practical, and applicable promotive–preventive strategy to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome and strengthen routine health screening behavior among productive adults.

Abstract

Grip strength is a key indicator of muscle function and health in elderly women, influencing mobility and independence. Factors such as blood pressure, body composition, and metabolic biomarkers influence grip strength. This study examines the relationship between blood pressure, anthropometric measurements, hemoglobin, hematocrit, blood sugar, and uric acid with grip strength. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 34 elderly women (mean age: 72.24 years) in the St. Asisi Elderly Community, Tebet. Blood pressure, anthropometric parameters, and venous blood samples were analyzed. Grip strength was assessed using the Camry Electronic Hand Dynamometer. Statistical analysis used the Spearman correlation test (p < 0.05). Age showed a significant negative correlation with right-hand (p = 0.023) and average grip strength (p = 0.026), indicating muscle decline with age. Other factors, including blood pressure, hemoglobin, hematocrit, blood sugar, and uric acid, had no significant correlations. Among anthropometric measures, calf circumference showed the strongest positive correlation with grip strength (p = 0.063). Age is the primary factor affecting grip strength in elderly women, with weak or no significant associations for other parameters. Strength training and neuromuscular conditioning may help mitigate age-related muscle decline and support functional independence.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The incidence of hypertension in Southeast Asia reached 39.9% in the year 2020. In Indonesia, there was an increase in hypertension cases from 2013 to 2018. In 2018, Tangerang Regency recorded approximately 274,792 residents suffering from hypertension. The total new cases in the work area of the Sindang Jaya Community Health Center from November 2022 to January 2023 amounted to 557 new cases. Through a community diagnosis approach, the cause of the increase was found to be the lack of public knowledge about hypertension. The aim of this research is to enhance knowledge in order to reduce the number of new cases of hypertension in the community within the work area of the Sindang Jaya Community Health Center. A quasi-experimental study with pre-tests and post-tests was conducted. The intervention was carried out through education to improve public knowledge in the Sindang Jaya Community Health Center area. The research sample was non-randomly selected through consecutive sampling. The independent variable in this study was the intervention provided to enhance public knowledge, while the dependent variable was the change in knowledge due to the intervention. After the intervention, 14 out of 15 participants in the education program experienced an increase in knowledge in 10 aspects used as knowledge indicators, with an average increase of 13.5%. Education successfully increased public knowledge about hypertension. It is hoped that this change in knowledge will also lead to changes in the attitudes and behaviors of the community, ultimately helping to prevent an increase in new cases of hypertension in the population. Keywords: Hypertension, Public Health, Knowledge, Education  ABSTRAK Angka kejadian hipertensi di Asia Tenggara mencapai 39,9% pada tahun 2020. Abstract

ABSTRACT Low albumin and vitamin D levels in the elderly are often due to factors such as malnutrition, inflammation, and illness. A deficiency in albumin can affect the availability of vitamin D because it binds to albumin. Maintaining normal levels of albumin and vitamin D in the elderly has positive impacts on nutrition, healing, infection prevention, and metabolic function. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between vitamin D levels and albumin levels in the elderly. It was conducted at Santa Anna Elderly Care Home in November 2023. The variables in this study were vitamin D levels and albumin levels. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney test. Out of 47 respondents, the average age was 77.55 years. Mann-Whitney test results indicated no significant relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and albumin levels in blood serum (p-value: 0.770). The correlation between these two variables showed a negative correlation, meaning that lower levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were associated with higher albumin levels. This is interesting because it contradicts the research hypothesis, suggesting that albumin levels may be influenced by factors outside the variables being studied. The correlation result of 0.044 falls into the category of very weak and cannot be considered a determining variable between two variables. Further analysis using the Mann-Whitney test revealed that there was no significant relationship or difference in mean values between 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in the hypoalbuminemia and normal groups (p-value: 0.919), and there was no significant relationship or difference in mean values between albumin levels in the vitamin D deficiency and normal groups.
