Abstract

Stomata are small pores located in the epidermis of leaves, which function important in gas exchange between plants and the environment. Each stomata is flanked by a pair of guard cells that regulate its opening, allowing the entry of carbon dioxide (CO2) for photosynthesis and the exit of oxygen (O2) and water vapor. Stomata play their role in the processes of photosynthesis, respiration, temperature and humidity regulation. Every plant has stomata, but each plant has a different size and density of stomata. This is caused by environmental factors and plant genetics. There are also different types of stomata in plants, some are anomostic, anisocytic, parastic, diastic and actinocytic. For this reason, further research is needed regarding the analysis of the shape and characteristics of stomata cells in Adam Eve (Rhoe Discolor) plants. The results of the research show that the stomata on Adam Eve have a unique shape like a bean or like a kidney, with varying sizes depending on environmental conditions and different plant genetics. Research also found that the stomata in Adam and Eve have an anomostic type. These findings provide important insight into the shape and role of stomata in the context of the growth of ornamental plants such as Adam's Eve leaves (Rhoe Discolor).

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the structure of the epidermal cells and stomata in two plant species, namely Allium cepa (onion) and Aglaia odorata (champaca). The methods used in this research include sample preparation, staining, and microscopic observation. The results show that the epidermal cell structure of both species has significant morphological differences. The epidermis of Allium cepa exhibits larger, densely arranged cells with fewer stomata compared to Aglaia odorata, which has smaller epidermal cells and more stomata. These differences can be attributed to the adaptation of both species to their growing environments. This finding provides a better understanding of the morphological adaptations of plants in facing different environmental conditions.

Abstract

Analyzes Amitosis, Mitosis and Meiosis Genetic Materials and DNA Replicas. This research uses qualitative methods and combines empirical data with relevant theory through a descriptive approach. A library study approach is used to collect secondary data from various sources, including books, journals, scientific articles and online media. The findings show 1) Amitosis, as a simple process, is involved in the growth and maintenance of cells in simpler organisms, while mitosis is important for the growth, repair and maintenance of tissues in the body. On the other hand, meiosis is a special process that occurs during sexual reproduction, producing reproductive cells with a haploid set of chromosomes necessary for the union of reproductive cells of different sexes. 2) These differences ensure that organisms can grow, develop, and produce efficiently and accurately. Thus, understanding the mechanisms of DNA replication and cell division processes becomes important in the context of cell biology, genetics, and the evolution of organisms.

Abstract

Opportunistic fungal infections caused by Candida albicans pose increasing global health challenges, especially in immunocompromised patients. Resistance to conventional antifungal agents such as azoles and echinocandins has driven the search for alternative natural sources of antifungal compounds. This study reviews the isolation and identification of endophytic bacteria from Curcuma xanthorrhiza rhizomes and their potential to produce antifungal metabolites against C. albicans. Literature from the past ten years was analyzed, focusing on bacterial endophytes isolated from temulawak, their identification methods, and antifungal activities. Dominant endophytes such as Bacillus subtilis, B. amyloliquefaciens, and Pseudomonas fluorescens demonstrated significant inhibition of C. albicans growth, with inhibition zones ranging from 10 to 25 mm and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) between 62.5 and 250 µg/mL. Antifungal activity is attributed to bioactive secondary metabolites, particularly lipopeptides produced by Bacillus species. Molecular identification via 16S rRNA sequencing confirms bacterial taxonomy, supporting further biotechnological exploration. This review highlights the promising potential of temulawak endophytic bacteria as a natural source for new antifungal agents to address drug resistance issues.

Abstract

Fermentation is one of the traditional food processing techniques that not only functions as a preservation method, but also plays a role in improving the nutritional quality and safety of food. One example of a typical Indonesian fermented food that has survived from generation to generation is naniura, a traditional dish of the Batak Toba people made from carp (Cyprinus carpio) which is processed without a cooking process. The fermentation process in naniura is carried out spontaneously by soaking in a solution of citrus (Citrus Sp.) and a mixture of local spices, thus creating an acidic environment that supports the growth of fermentative microorganisms, especially lactic acid bacteria (LAB). The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify LAB from naniura, as well as to carry out morphological characteristics, Gram staining, and sensitivity tests to several commonly used antibiotics. Isolation was carried out using MRS media in anaerobic conditions, while sensitivity tests were carried out using the disc diffusion method. The results showed that isolates from naniura had Gram-positive characteristics, rod-shaped, catalase negative, and showed varying inhibition zones against antibiotics. Some isolates showed resistance to amoxicillin and cefataxim, but were sensitive to erythromycin and gentamicin. These results indicate that LAB from naniura has potential as a probiotic candidate, but it is necessary to monitor the possibility of antibiotic resistance gene transfer.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the presence of Staphylococcus aureus in fermented pedo fish (Decapterus spp.) products using the Gram staining technique. The Gram staining technique is a simple but effective method to distinguish Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria based on differences in their cell wall structure. Samples were taken from traditional fermented pedo fish and analyzed in a microbiology laboratory. The results showed the presence of Gram-positive coccus-shaped bacteria that clustered like grapes, in accordance with the morphological characteristics of S. aureus. This identification can be used as an initial step in evaluating the microbiological quality of fermented products.

Abstract

Shrimp petis is a traditional Indonesian fermented product that is susceptible to contamination by pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas spp. Preservation is generally carried out with chemical antibiotics, but their use can cause side effects and microbial resistance. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of ginger extract (Zingiber officinale) as a natural antibiotic against bacteria in shrimp petis. Ginger extract is known to contain active compounds such as gingerol and shogaol which have antibacterial activity. Through literature studies and disc diffusion method analysis, it was found that ginger extract was able to produce an inhibition zone of 12–22 mm against test bacteria. These results indicate that ginger extract is effective in inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria and has the potential to be used as a natural preservative. In addition, a combination of biological, chemical, and natural preservation approaches is recommended to maintain the quality and safety of shrimp petis. The use of ginger extract is in line with the trend of healthy and environmentally friendly food.

Abstract

This research was conducted to assess the antimicrobial activity of Dettol, Betadine, and Harpic against the bacterial growth of Staphylococcus aureus using the disk diffusion technique. The method involved placing sterile paper disks soaked with each test agent onto agar media previously inoculated with S. aureus. Observations revealed that Harpic formed the widest inhibition zone, measuring 15 mm, followed by Dettol with a 12 mm zone, and Betadine with the smallest at 8 mm. Meanwhile, the control disk exhibited no inhibitory effect (0 mm). These results suggest that Harpic has the highest antimicrobial potential among the three products tested in suppressing Staphylococcus aureus growth.

Abstract

Palm wine (tuak) is a traditional fermented beverage that is prone to microbial contamination, thus requiring natural alternatives with antibacterial properties. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Curcuma xanthorrhiza (temulawak) extract in inhibiting microbial growth in tuak samples. The method used was the disc diffusion test with three extract concentrations, 25%, 50%, and 100%. The tuak samples were first femented, serially diluted, and inoculated on Nutrient Agar (NA). Sterile paper discs soaked in each extract were placed on the medium surface and incubated at room temperature for 24 hours. The results showed no visible inhibition zones around the discs at any concentration tested. The conclusion of this study is that temulawak extract at concentrations of 25–100% did not demonstrate antibacterial activity against microorganisms in tuak samples. This study serves as a foundational evaluation of natural antibacterial agents and highlights the need for further optimization of extraction techniques or targeted testing on specific bacterial isolates.

Abstract

Orthosiphon aristatus is a medicinal plant that has the potential as a natural antibacterial agent. This study aims to evaluate the effect of cat's whiskers leaf extract on microbial growth using Nutrient Agar (NA) media with variations in extract concentrations of 100 gr, 50 gr, and 25 gr. Antibacterial activity tests were carried out using the well diffusion paper disk method, and observations of microbial growth inhibition zones were carried out after incubation for 24 hours at 37°C. The test results showed that there was inhibition of microbial growth that varied according to the concentration of the extract used; a concentration of 100 gr gave the largest inhibition zone compared to 50 gr and 25 gr. Data analysis showed that increasing extract concentration was directly proportional to increasing antibacterial effectiveness. These findings indicate that Orthosiphon aristatus leaf extract has the potential as a natural antibacterial that is effective in inhibiting microbial growth in NA media, so it has the potential to be developed as an active ingredient in pharmaceutical formulations.
