Abstract

This study aims to understand how Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) functions as a political ideology within the context of Brunei Darussalam’s absolute monarchy, to analyze its formation and the core components of Malay identity, Islam, and monarchy, as well as to evaluate its implementation in public policy, the education system, and governance. Furthermore, this research seeks to explore how MIB sustains monarchical legitimacy and political stability amid global modernization, while also identifying its implications for transparency, public participation, and modern governance in Brunei Darussalam. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using a literature study method. Primary data were obtained from official government documents of Brunei Darussalam, while secondary data were derived from academic literature. The research instrument used was a literature data recording sheet designed to organize findings from the literature review. The analytical technique applied was content analysis, which systematically interprets the content of texts and documents. The findings reveal that the concept of Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) represents a political ideology that integrates Islamic, Malay, and monarchical values to affirm Brunei Darussalam’s national identity. This ideology serves both as a symbol of nationhood and as a foundation of political and moral legitimacy that underpins the Sultan’s authority within the absolute monarchy. MIB internalizes cultural and religious values to foster social cohesion and political stability amid global uncertainty. The governance system of Brunei demonstrates that political stability can be achieved through ideological and moral legitimacy rather than through electoral processes as in democratic systems. This model places trust, obedience, and moral responsibility as the fundamental pillars of state governance, where monarchical power is perceived as a manifestation of the nation’s religious and cultural values.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of authoritarian backsliding or democratic regression in Southeast Asia, focusing on Indonesia and Thailand. Conceptually, backsliding refers to the gradual weakening of democracy through formal and legal mechanisms by political actors within the system itself. The research employs a literature study method, analyzing academic sources and international reports relevant to the topic. The findings indicate that both Indonesia and Thailand have experienced democratic decline characterized by the consolidation of executive power, the weakening of oversight institutions, and restrictions on civil liberties. In Indonesia, democratic regression occurs primarily through executive aggrandizement and strategic manipulation of elections, while in Thailand, it manifests through promissory coups under military dominance. The study concludes that democratic decline in Southeast Asia often occurs not through overt authoritarian takeovers but through a subtle erosion of democratic institutions that undermines popular sovereignty.

Abstract

The Moro conflict in the Southern Philippines is rooted in postcolonial structural marginalization and failed integration, posing a serious threat to Philippine national identity. The purpose of this study is to analyze the Moro conflict as a threat to national identity and its impact on ASEAN political cohesion, using Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities Theory framework. The method used is a qualitative literature study approach, as data collection utilized secondary data analysis from credible journals and academic documents. The results show that the failure of the Philippine national narrative to create bonds of equal solidarity, as envisioned by Anderson, has triggered the emergence of a separate "Bangsamoro" superordinate identity that rejects a homogeneous Filipino identity. This identity polarization has given rise to a separatist generation of the MNLF, MILF, and the radical Abu Sayyaf group. Regionally, this conflict threatens ASEAN cohesion through security spillover and transnational criminality in the Sulu Sea, forcing ASEAN to develop collective security cooperation mechanisms, such as the Trilateral Maritime Patrol. Conflict resolution through the implementation of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) is considered crucial for strengthening Philippine national integrity and maintaining regional stability.

Abstract

The military coup in Myanmar on February 1, 2021, marked a critical setback for the country’s democratic transition and triggered one of the most severe political and humanitarian crises in Southeast Asia. This paper aims to analyze ASEAN’s effectiveness in addressing the Myanmar crisis through the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC). Using a qualitative approach and library research method, the study explores ASEAN’s normative and institutional limitations in responding to internal conflicts that have regional implications. The research employs Normative Institutionalism and Regional Security Complex Theory as analytical frameworks to explain how ASEAN’s fundamental principles particularly non-interference and consensus decision making shape the organization’s cautious and non-coercive diplomacy. The findings reveal that ASEAN’s response remains largely symbolic and lacks enforcement mechanisms, resulting in low implementation effectiveness. Factors such as institutional weaknesses, normative constraints, and divergent geopolitical interests among member states further hinder progress. The study proposes a Five-Point Consensus Plus (5PC+) model, emphasizing measurable indicators, independent monitoring, and civil society engagement to strengthen ASEAN’s peacebuilding capacity. In conclusion, ASEAN must undergo institutional reform and reinterpret its norms to enhance its credibility as a regional peace and security actor.
