Abstract

Shrimp aquaculture depends on stable water quality, but fluctuations often reduce growth and survival, making optimal conditions essential for sustainable Penaeus monodon culture. This study aimed to evaluate key water quality parameters in two shrimp ponds and assess their suitability against established aquaculture standards. Field measurements and laboratory analyses were conducted over ten weeks across three sampling stations in each pond. Parameters measured included pH, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate, and water hardness. Results showed that pH ranged from 7.29–7.80, temperature from 31.40–32.00 °C, salinity from 17.30–17.88 ppt, and DO from 5.29–5.87 mg/L, all within acceptable limits (SNI 8038.1:2014). Nutrient concentrations varied, with nitrate (0–0.4 mg/L), nitrite (0–0.4 mg/L), ammonia (0.1–0.4 mg/L), and phosphate (0–0.5 mg/L), where ammonia occasionally exceeded the safe threshold of 0.1 mg/L. Water hardness ranged from 0.17–0.43 mg/L CaCO₃, below the reference limit of 100 mg/L CaCO₃. Overall, the ponds provided suitable conditions for shrimp growth, but elevated nutrient levels at certain periods indicate the need for improved feed and waste management. Maintaining balanced water quality is essential to optimizing shrimp health, enhancing productivity, and ensuring the sustainability of aquaculture practices.

Abstract

The application of probiotic bacteria in black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) aquaculture constitutes a preventive strategy aimed at mitigating the risk of disease outbreaks. This study aims to compare the efficacy of Bacillus subtilis and Lactobacillus acidophilus in inhibiting Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection through both in vitro and in vivo evaluations. The research was conducted from January to March 2025 at the Fisheries Biology Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Universitas Borneo Tarakan. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and three replicates each, namely Control (-) uninfected and without probiotics, Control (+) infected with V. parahaemolyticus at 104 CFU/mL without probiotics, Bs given B. subtilis at 108 CFU/mL and infected with V. parahaemolyticus at 104 CFU/mL, and La given L. acidophilus at 108 CFU/mL and infected with V. parahaemolyticus at 104 CFU/mL. Observed parameters included antibacterial inhibition, survival rate (SR), mortality pattern, mean time to death (MTD), relative percentage survival (RPS), bacterial population, clinical symptoms, and water quality. L. acidophilus demonstrated greater efficacy than B. subtilis in inhibiting V. parahaemolyticus infection in black tiger shrimp. The survival rate of shrimp treated with L. acidophilus reached 69.67%, whereas the group treated with B. subtilis exhibited a survival rate of 43.00%. Overall, the application of L. acidophilus consistently yielded superior survival outcomes compared to B. subtilis.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a major impact on society, such as job losses, rising staples, and economic hardship. Prices of food needs that continue to increase and are not affordable have resulted in food problems, one of which is protein. One of the high-quality protein is protein from fish. Fish as a fishery commodity that is relatively easy to cultivate on a large industrial scale and household scale for food self-sufficiency is catfish (Clarias sp). The purpose of this activity is to add insight and knowledge of the community about budikdamber for food self-sufficiency. The method of implementing community service activities in Kampung Six is carried out by counseling and training methods on Budikdamber. In this training activity, a bucket with 40 liters of water and 20 catfish seeds was used. Maintenance was carried out for 60 days with ad satiation feeding three times a day. Observations were made on growth, survival and water quality. The results of the activity found that 93% of the community partners had understood about Budikdamber. Budikdamber maintenance by partner communities gets an absolute weight growth value of catfish of 14 g, catfish survival value of 75%, and 1 bunch of kale per bucket. Based on the results of this activity, it is hoped that there will be the provision of special land for Budikdamber as an example for people who want to develop in their respective yards.
