Abstract

Lichens are symbiotic association between fungi (mycobionts) and photosynthetic partners (phycobiont) that play essential ecological roles as bioindicators, pioneers in succession, and contributors to nutrient cycling. Despite their importance, the diversity and morphology of lichens in West Papua remain poorly documented. This study aimed to assess the morphology diversity of lichen taxa in Amban Regency, Manokwari, West Papua. The method used was explorative surveys with purposive sampling in Amban Regency (site I, II, and III) based on low, moderate, and high air quality. Lichen identification was based on morphological characteristic. The results showed that there were 27 species lichens belong to 12 genera and 8 families Chrysothrichaceae, Coenogoniaceae, Collemataceae, Graphidaceae, Megalosporaceae, Parmeliaceae, Physciaceae, and Strigulacea. The dominant species were from the families of Graphidaceae. Crustose lichens dominated (74%), foliose lichens (18%), with filamentous and leprose (4% each), while fruticose types were absent. Crustose lichens exhibited strong substrate adhesion and tolerance to variable microclimatic conditions with temperatures between 26,1-29,3°C, whereas foliose and filamentous forms were confined to more stable, and humid habitats between 72,0-85,4%. Continued surveys are recommended to monitor potential shifts in community composition under climate change and habitat disturbance.

Abstract

The learning process in high schools in West Papua tends to focus on students’ cognitive enhancement and ignore the aspect skill. School is the frontline to develop students’ skills. Metacognitive and process skills are the two skills needed by the students, and both should be trained and developed. These two skills help students to implement an investigation process in which the investigation process can be well utilized using inquiry-based learning. This study aims to find out the differences in metacognitive and process skills between students treated with inquiry-based learning and those who are taught using conventional learning. This experimental study was carried out at Grade X of senior high school students of SMA Negeri 1 Manokwari. The result reveals a significant metacognitive skill of 0.000 < α 0.05, and science process skill of 0.001 < α 0.05 of students who were taught using the inquiry-based learning more than those who were taught using the conventional learning. It can be concluded that there is a significant improvement in students’ metacognitive and process skills for those who are taught using inquiry-based learning compared to those who are taught using conventional learning. Therefore, inquiry-based learning has the potential to appropriately train students’ metacognitive and science process skill.

Abstract

The problem of environmental pollution must be well thought out using critical thinking. Many young people gain knowledge about the problem of environmental pollution through learning activities at school. This research aims to analyze the students' critical thinking skills regarding environmental pollution. A total of 266 respondents have filled out the critical thinking test. The respondents are junior high school students in West Papua. There are twenty-one tests with two levels of multiple-choice answers. Tests are given online and as paper tests. Data obtained from respondents was calculated using percentages. The results showed that the student's critical thinking skills on environmental pollution problems in contrasting and comparing were moderate, identifying cause and effect was weak, and sequencing was moderate. Overall, the student's critical thinking skills regarding environmental pollution reached a weak category. The results of this study show that students' ability to think critically about environmental pollution is weak and needs to be improved. Future research can improve these skills so that the problem of pollution in the environment can be solved.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  The contextual learning approach is a strategy that emphasizes the connection between subject matter and students' real-life experiences. However, understanding and application of this approach are still limited in several elementary schools in rural areas, including SD Inpres 30 Aitinyo, Maybrat Regency. This community service activity aimed to provide teachers and students with information on the concept and implementation of a contextual approach in learning. The methods used included material delivery, interactive discussions, and learning simulations, involving 6 teachers and 57 students. The results of the activity showed that before the socialization, most teachers were still using a conventional approach that focused on memorization, with limitations in linking material to the local context. After the activity, there was an increase in teachers' understanding of designing context-based learning and increased student active involvement in the learning process. Teachers also began developing lesson plans that incorporated elements of the surrounding environment and local culture as learning resources. Students showed a positive response through their activeness and ability to relate material to everyday experiences. It was concluded that this activity successfully improved teachers' understanding and skills in applying a contextual approach and encouraged active student participation in more meaningful learning. It is hoped that this activity will be the first step towards implementing contextual learning on a sustainable basis in elementary schools in the Maybrat Regency area.  Keywords: Aitinyo; Approach, Teacher; Contextual; Student.

Abstract

Research by several researchers on Biology Education Research (BER) showed that science process skills (SPS) were still a little bit researched. The purposes of this research are to reveal the followings: (1) the potential of inquiry-based student books integrated with local resources to improve students' science process skills; and (2) the differences in boys and girls science process skills. An experiment using the factorial design (2 X 2) was done on 52 randomly-selected senior high school students. Data collection was used essay test, then analyzed using ANOVA. This research revealed that students' SPS experienced an improvement when they studied in an inquiry class supported by a student book integrated with local resources. There is no distinction in the science process skills of boys and girls students. Boys and girls have the same opportunity to develop their SPS.
