Abstract

Abstract

Online learning has significantly transformed lecturers' methodologies and students' learning experiences in English Language Teaching (ELT). This qualitative case study explores the perceptions and challenges of online ELT in the post-pandemic context, aiming to inform the design of effective future online learning environments. Data were gathered through document analysis, unstructured questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews with six lecturers and ninety students from the English Language Education Study Program at Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar. Findings indicate that online ELT has enhanced flexibility and accessibility, boosting learners' self-confidence and fostering self-directed and reflective learning through structured educational presentations. However, challenges persist, including the need for lecturers to maintain student engagement and provide effective feedback online, ensuring that even disengaged students participate actively. Additionally, the objectivity of online assessments and the technological divide are critical concerns. The study underscores the necessity of meticulously addressing these challenges and perceptions to cultivate more dynamic and inclusive online ELT classrooms in the future.

Abstract

This study used classroom action research to investigate if the L-R-D method may improve reading comprehension in the VIII class at SMPN 4 Kuta Utara. There were two sessions per cycle of this two-cycle classroom action research methodology. Pre- and post-tests, as well as a questionnaire, were employed by the researcher as data collection tools. The pre-test results from the first reflection were used as the foundation for this investigation. The results demonstrated the students' persistent struggles with reading comprehension and their inability to discriminate between references, textual meaning, specific information, and general information. After taking the pre-test (58.9), cycle one post-test (72.8), and cycle two post-test (81.4), the respondents' mean scores showed a substantial improvement. Additionally, the results of this study indicated favourable attitudes about the application of the L-R-D approach. The results of the questionnaire indicated that 46.08% agreed, 2.77% agreed, 0.28% disagreed, and 0% strongly disagreed, with 50.85% highly agreeing. The L-R-D technique may improve the reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMPN 4 Kuta Utara, according to the study's findings.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is an important skill when studying English, yet many EFL students have difficulty reaching the required proficiency levels. While both Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Reciprocal Teaching (RT) are successful when used separately, little research has been done on how they might be used together to improve reading comprehension, especially in EFL university settings. This study explores integrating reciprocal and communicative language teaching strategies on students' reading comprehension. This research utilized classroom action research with pre-tests and post-tests to gather quantitative data and questionnaires to assess students' responses. The findings consistently indicate that integrating Reciprocal Teaching (RT) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) significantly enhances students' reading comprehension. The students show positive experiences through tests and questionnaires, including improved text comprehension, increased self-confidence, and a more engaging learning environment. Based on these outcomes, it is recommended that lecturers integrate reciprocal teaching and communicative language teaching to improve reading comprehension skills. The findings show that integrating RT and CLT significantly improves English reading comprehension and usage of these strategies in EFL students. Reading is a crucial English language skill, yet students' comprehension achievement is often below expectations. Keywords: Communicative language teaching, integrating, reading, reciprocal teaching
