Abstract

ABSTRACTBased on Grice's theory (1989), cooperative principle makes communication becomeunderstandable so that the meaning of the utterances can be well received by the interlocutor. However, in daily lives, this principle is often floated by the speaker and interlocutor becausesometimes the speakers want the interlocutor to get the meaning of the utterances that cannotbe expressed explicitly. This violation is known as floating maxim. This study aims to explorethe functions of floating maxims that occurs in conversations between characters in the movieentitled The Hunger Games. The function refers to the speech act theory, in which Searle(1979) states that there are five points of speech acts, namely functioning as representative, directive, commissive, expressive and declarative. The methods used in this research areobservational and qualitative methods, by watching movies and reading the script of themovie’s conversation while taking notes the conversations that contain floating maxim, classifying the functions of floating maxim occurred by Searle's (1979) theory and supportedby theory of context situation by Halliday (1985). The results of this study indicate that thereare 30 floating maxim obtained, 19 data (63%) have function as representatives, five data(17%) have function as directive statements, one data (3%) has function as commissivestatements and 5 data (17%) have functions as expressive utterance.

Abstract

Covid-19 Pandemic brought many changes of human life, including education. This study aimed to describe the implementation flipped learning through Zoom and Google Classroom in University in Bali during Covid-19 pandemic. This study was an descriptive study which was conducted in one of the universities in Bali in academic year 2019/2020 by using two research instruments, namely observation and interview. The result showed google Classroom was optimized in giving instruction or materials to the students via comment to make the instruction became accessible to all students. Then, Zoom meeting was used for class discussion after learning at home from instruction on Google Classroom. Some problems were occurred such as internet connection and limited non-verbal responses. However, In teacher’s perspective, flipped learning is really helpful because the teacher just need to give the material and instruction to students at home in Google Classroom and then at class discussion on Zoom, the teacher just need to act as facilitator.

Abstract

This study investigates the sentence structures found in the novel and the acceptability of their translations in the target language. The data were collected through direct observation and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method. The study was conducted because English exposure in countries where English is not the native language does not guarantee that people can fully understand and use it accurately. The analysis identified seven intentional complex sentences that were translated into corresponding complex sentences in the English version of the novel. The original author predominantly used the subordinators “untuk” and, in several parts, “agar.” In the English translation, a variety of subordinators were employed to maintain grammatical and contextual equivalence. The structural distribution shows that Independent–Dependent constructions appeared in 75% of the data, while Dependent–Independent constructions accounted for 25%. This indicates that the translator generally preferred maintaining the source text’s syntactic pattern, ensuring readability and coherence in the target language. Based on the questionnaire responses, approximately 88% of the translated complex sentences were considered easily understood by respondents, indicating high translation acceptability. However, according to Larson’s (1984) theory of Translation Acceptability, two sentences failed to meet the acceptability criteria due to minor issues in meaning equivalence and naturalness. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of syntactic and semantic accuracy in literary translation to preserve the author’s intent and maintain fluency in the target language, especially when translating complex sentence structures across linguistically distant languages.

Abstract

Translation is crucial in facilitating cross-cultural understanding, especially in educational and touristic contexts such as museums. In this context, the accurate and acceptable translation of geographic terms is essential to ensure that information remains clear, informative, and culturally relevant for diverse audiences. This study aims to identify various types of geography terms found on the information board at the Batur Volcano Museum, also known as the Geopark Batur Museum. In addition, this study analyzes the most dominant types of terms and their relevance to the museum. The research data was taken from the bilingual informational board with geographic terms in the Geopark Batur Museum. The qualitative method explains the types of geography terms found on the information boards. This analysis is based on the theory of landscape linguistics by Yendra and Artawa (2020) and integrates geography theory, including the theory of geography types by Sinartejo (2019). The results showed five geography terms on the information board: atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and anthroposphere, with lithosphere as the most dominant type. This is because the museum aims to educate visitors about the geological phenomena that shape the landscape of Batur and its surroundings, so information about the lithosphere is very prominent on the information board. The geographic term lithosphere type refers to information about the rock and soil formations in the region, which are the main attraction for visitors who want to understand the geological uniqueness of Batur. The term lithosphere is therefore very relevant as it covers basic knowledge of the Earth's structure, which is important to understand in geography and geology.

Abstract

The field of Translation and Interpreting (T&I) encompasses bilingual activities in transferring messages from a source language to a target language with an assertive cognitive capacity to produce natural and equivalent meaning. This study serves as a preliminary experiment to explore the cognitive capacity development of ESL students in rendering messages within T&I. Mix-method is applied by involving 28 students taking the test of rendering the messages orally and in written. The experiment consists of three stages: a CEFR test, which reveals that the students' highest level is B1 Intermediate; a 12-session T&I course covering theory, strategies, and practice; and an evaluation phase including feedback collected through questionnaires. In general, the T&I process of rendering messages from English (EN) to Indonesian (ID) is deemed naturally acceptable, and the students are able to accomplish the task. However, there are challenges related to working memory, which result in students not achieving excellent test scores. The EN-ID group shows better performance in translating and interpreting, particularly in the higher score ranges, whereas the ID-EN group has a larger number of participants with lower scores. Additionally, delivering messages from Indonesian to English poses challenges, especially in the context of noun phrases. These challenges are primarily attributed to differences in word order, determiners and articles, prepositions, idiomatic expressions, vocabulary, as well as the participants' proficiency level and exposure to both languages.

Abstract

Social media has become a key tool in global tourism promotion, including for Indonesia through its official Instagram account, @wonderfulindonesia. This article analyzes various translation errors found in the English captions translated from the original Indonesian versions. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and translation error analysis model, the study examined 30 Instagram posts from January to June 2025. The findings reveal a range of errors, including grammatical, lexical, syntactic, pragmatic, as well as collocational and idiomatic mistakes. These errors not only affect the clarity of the message but also reduce emotional appeal, hinder cross-cultural communication, and undermine the professional image of the government-managed account. Furthermore, translation inaccuracies decrease audience engagement, create inconsistent branding, and weaken Indonesia’s digital diplomacy efforts. The study emphasizes the need for professional translators who understand both cultural context and promotional purpose, to ensure that the language used is not only linguistically correct but also persuasive and communicative. By improving translation quality, Indonesia’s digital tourism promotion can more effectively attract international audiences and build a positive global image.
