Abstract

The incidence of violence in the elderly is suspected to have a very detrimental effect and can reduce the quality of life of the elderly. Several interventions, such as increasing public awareness and health workers, screening the risk of violence, and strengthening the elderly group to be able to report incidents of violence are known to have a positive effect on reducing cases of violence in the elderly. The activity was carried out in the form of increasing knowledge about violence in the elderly virtually for 464 participants consisting of nursing students and professional nurses from 23 provinces. The results of the Wilcoxon test analysis showed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05) which indicated a positive benefit in increasing nurses' knowledge about violence in the elderly. Health workers, especially nurses, are still one of the parties trusted by the elderly group to get rid of all the pain and treatment they experience. The implementation of knowledge improvement programs is known to have a positive effect on nurses' knowledge, some limitations that may be considered by researchers or health workers in designing further activities include: the need for full support from policy makers in implementing the program, the need for a program that is sustainable and not only carried out once in a while, and the need for an active role from health workers to participate in finding out about violence in the elderly through several other ways.

Abstract

Stunting is a worldwide issue that affects children, in which Indonesia has a high stunting rate of 36.4 percent of children stunted. Stunting has a significant negative impact on children's growth and development including nutritional status. To avoid this, it is vital to discover the problem as soon as feasible. The Card to Health (Kartu Menuju Sehat/KMS) and the Denver II instrument can be used for early detection, as well as child growth and development examinations. However, kindergarten teachers, who are on the front lines of education, do not yet have access to KMS and Denver II. The purpose of this activity is to increase teachers' abilities to diagnose stunting in children at a young age using KMS and Denver II. During the months of August to November 2019, the Pelangi Islamic Kindergarten in Depok carried out community service activities. Thirteen teachers and 18 pupils took part in the activity. As a result, 100 percent of teachers improved their ability to use KMS, and up to three children were classified as fat, one had autism, and one had reservations about Denver II. At the Pelangi Islamic Kindergarten, no students are considered stunted. Stunting and nutritional status can be detected by community service activities, and teachers' capacity to detect stunting and nutritional status using KMS and Denver II can be improved significantly.

Abstract

Health myths are one of the factors that can hinder the achievement of government programs in the health sector. The resistance that arises from the community can be even greater if the believed myths have taken root in social life and are  considered to have magical elements in their implementation. To change the errors in people’s health beliefs in society,  health workers are important in providing proper health education and health literacy to all levels of society. Based on the  problems found, the team’s goal was to improve nursing students’ knowledge about health myths in Indonesia. This activity was implemented for 199 nursing students from 7 provinces (DKI Jakarta, West Java, Banten, Jambi, East Java, Central Java, and Southeast Sulawesi) online through Zoom meetings. This activity was the final series of activities conducted by the Institute of Training, Education and Research, Nurse Share Idea (NSID) about health myths that exist in Indonesia, while the implementation of this series of activities was done from November 2020 to August 2021. The results of the Wilcoxon testing of the activities had the value of sig = 0.002 (<0.005), which means that the activities have had a significant and positive impact on improving nursing students’ knowledge about health myths in Indonesia. Four of the 14 topics of understanding  health myths were decreased. These four topics are related to myths in nursing care. The results indicated that activities could increase participants’ knowledge of health myths. However, nurses still experience confusion preventing myths in implementing nursing care for patients. Other activities can focus on increasing efforts to counteract myths in implementing nursing care.

Abstract

Abstract

The world is currently in a humanitarian crisis, with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic creating a negative stigma in society toward people infected with COVID-19. Breastfeeding mothers are among the vulnerable groups, and they are not without stigma. The purpose of this study is to investigate the experiences of breastfeeding mothers who are positive for COVID-19 in carrying out self-quarantine. This qualitative study employs a phenomenological approach with a snowball sample selection. This research used a semi-structured approach to conduct in-depth interview. This study reached saturation in fifteen participants. Four themes appear related to  keeping a positive COVID-19 status secret was the best decision for safety. Themes that emerged from this research was that keeping a positive COVID-19 status secret was the best decision for safety. This theme emerges from the decision to keep it hidden as well as the reasons for doing so. The decision to keep it hidden was deemed appropriate in order to avoid the negative stigma that could lead to ostracization and blame from the community, family, and health workers.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) insertion is a common procedure performed by nurses for hospitalized children, but phlebitis—an inflammation of the vein—is a frequent complication. The response of the mother, as the child’s primary caregiver, plays a key role in the healing process when phlebitis occurs. Objective: This study aimed to explore mothers’ experiences and perceptions regarding the occurrence and management of phlebitis in their children during hospitalization. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological design was employed for this study, conducted between August and October 2023. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with sixteen mothers whose children had experienced phlebitis during their hospital stay. The interviews were transcribed verbatim, and data were analyzed using content analysis. Each participant validated the transcripts before analysis. Results: Three main themes emerged from the data: 1) Risk factors and causes of phlebitis; 2) Early detection and confirmation of phlebitis; and 3) Management of IV infusion occlusions. Conclusion: Although the causes and risk factors for phlebitis in children cannot be entirely avoided, early detection by mothers can reduce some risks. The study also identified gaps in nursing practice, particularly regarding the management of infusion occlusions, with some practices deviating from standard procedures. To improve outcomes, nurses should adhere to evidence-based protocols for maintaining IV patency and proactively educate mothers on recognizing signs of phlebitis. Strengthening nurse-mother communication and ensuring consistent implementation of best practices are essential for preventing and effectively managing phlebitis in pediatric patients.

Abstract

In the teacher's point of view that the implementation of PJJ is considered less effective due to some teachers being unable to understand the use of technology, and the ability and level of student motivation is low, even teachers have difficulty monitoring students, teachers have difficulty evaluating students, students do not participate actively, students are not conducive (doing other things outside of what they should be), teacher and student interactions are not developed, student learning competencies are not achieved, learning outcomes are not optimal, learning materials are not delivered, families are less involved and have limitations in supporting student learning facilities. And on the other hand, the reason teachers think that PJJ can be done effectively is if teachers can use technology in learning, teachers can manage time, students have independent characteristics, teachers can convey material clearly and interestingly, students can participate actively, students do the assignments and exams given, teachers can build interaction between parents and students, test scores are achieved, learning materials are delivered to the maximum, families participate and facilities that support student learning.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has been over yet; one of the effects of this pandemic is plenty of hospitals in Indonesia have been applying for temporary health service closure. Objective: This study aimed to analyse the effect of health service closure during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: Simple study literature is the method for this study. Data Sources: This study used two different search processes. The first search process came from online news platforms (detik.com, kompas.com, and okezone.com), which used a combination of the words “COVID-19”, “emergency room”, “hospital”, and “closed” during November 2020. The second search was from the database (CINAHL, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, PubMed, SpringerLink, and Wiley Online). Review Methods: The guidelines of the second search used Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Both searching processes applied COVID-19 and hospital closed or emergency department closed as the keywords from November 2020-January 2021. Results: The first finding showed more than 300 news about health service closure, and the second showed 13 selected articles. There were 42 health service unit closures from 16 provinces in Indonesia. These closures had disadvantages effect for patients, nursing care and nursing education side. Conclusions: Total or partial health service closure could be happened due to increased patient capacity, delays in the treatment of the patient, many nurses getting infected by COVID-19, and nursing students cannot practice directly. Therefore, this issue needs innovative solutions to keep the nursing student placement going well by considering safety for the patient, nurses, nursing students, and trainer/ facilitator.
