Abstract

Logical and reflective thinking are key components of higher-order thinking in 21st-century education, yet many elementary students’ abilities remain underdeveloped due to teacher-centered instruction. This study investigates the effectiveness of a RADEC-based multiliteracy approach in enhancing these skills among fifth-grade students. Using a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design, 45 students in Malang, Indonesia (22 experimental; 23 control) participated in the study. Data were collected through validated logical and reflective thinking tests, supported by observations and interviews. Results showed significant differences between groups. The experimental group outperformed the control group in logical thinking (M = 75.00 vs. 47.83; p < .001) and reflective thinking (M = 81.41 vs. 40.65; p < .001). The findings suggest that the structured RADEC stages integrated with multiliteracy principles effectively foster systematic reasoning and metacognitive reflection, demonstrating strong pedagogical potential for promoting higher-order thinking in elementary education.

Abstract

The integration of local wisdom into elementary IPAS (science and social studies) learning remains limited, resulting in less contextual instruction and weaker support for character development. This study examined the effectiveness of Local Wisdom–Based IPAS teaching materials in improving fourth-grade students’ conceptual understanding and character. A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted with 30 students. Data were collected through conceptual understanding tests and character assessment instruments. Results showed a significant improvement in learning outcomes, with mean scores increasing from 74.33 to 81.30 (p < 0.05) and a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.29). Shapiro–Wilk tests confirmed normal data distribution (pretest p = 0.150; posttest p = 0.081). The findings indicate that activating prior knowledge rooted in local wisdom, supported by culturally responsive and multimodal learning approaches, promotes meaningful learning. This study provides empirical evidence that local wisdom–based materials enhance both academic achievement and character development in elementary education.

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education offers opportunities for adaptive and personalized learning; however, learning in the Indonesian Educational Philosophy course within the Teacher Professional Education Program (PPG) remains largely monologic, textual, and insufficiently reflective. This study aims to develop AI- and Deep Learning (DL)-based adaptive content integrated into the PPG Learning Management System (LMS). Using a qualitative case study design, the research involved 5 lecturers and 50 pre-service PPG students at Universitas Negeri Malang. Data were collected through observations, interviews, FGDs, documentation, and descriptive questionnaires, and analyzed using Stake’s model (description, interpretation, evaluation). Findings show that AI-integrated adaptive content—through personalized learning paths, NLP-based feedback, and learning analytics—enhances reflective engagement, contextual understanding, and learning effectiveness. The study recommends the development of AI-based LMS ecosystems to support reflective, learner-centered, and contextually meaningful teacher education.

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the Discovery Learning model and conventional learning in enhancing fifth-grade elementary students’ epistemic curiosity in science. A quantitative quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group was employed. The experimental group (n = 9) received Discovery Learning instruction, while the control group (n = 15) received conventional learning on the Water Cycle topic. Data were collected using a validated and reliable pre-test and post-test questionnaire assessing three dimensions of epistemic curiosity: observation, consultation, and directed thinking. Data were analyzed using the N-Gain test and independent samples t-test. Results showed that Discovery Learning produced greater improvement in all epistemic curiosity indicators than conventional learning. Discovery Learning was categorized as fairly effective, whereas conventional learning was ineffective. The findings indicate that Discovery Learning is a more effective approach for fostering epistemic curiosity in elementary science education.

Abstract

Teaching abstract science concepts like the human motion system remains challenging in elementary schools. This study compared four learning models to improve students’ conceptual understanding: AR-integrated EASI, EASI without AR, AR-only, and conventional lecture–discussion. Using a quasi-experimental design, 120 sixth-graders from four Indonesian elementary schools were tested using SOLO Taxonomy-based instruments. Data were analyzed via ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests. Results showed significant differences among groups (p = 0.000). The EASI+AR model yielded the highest improvement (N-Gain = 0.7287) and significantly outperformed AR-only and conventional models. AR alone did not significantly enhance understanding. In conclusion, technology integration requires a solid pedagogical framework like EASI to effectively boost conceptual understanding. Practically, these findings imply that educators and curriculum developers must prioritize pedagogically-driven technology rather than standalone digital tools to optimize elementary science learning.
