Abstract

Mathematical concepts must not only be understood or memorized in order for students to learn them effectively. Learners will more easily achieve learning objectives if they have a strong ability to understand mathematical concepts. However, in reality, researchers found that there are still many students who have difficulty in understanding the mathematical concepts taught by teachers during their education. This hampers the learning process because it causes the teacher to have to repeat the material continuously. The research method used was a pseudo-experiment with a 2x2 factorial design with level-based treatment. The data analysis technique used two-way ANOVA. The results of this study are as follows: 1) Overall mathematical understanding ability of students taught with IMPROVE method is higher than students taught with conventional method; 2) There is an interaction between learning method and PAM on mathematical understanding ability; 3) For students with high PAM, the mathematical comprehension ability of students taught with IMPROVE method is higher than that of students taught with conventional method; 4) For students with low PAM, the mathematical comprehension ability of students taught with IMPROVE method is higher than that of students taught with conventional method. For students with low PAM, the mathematical comprehension ability of students taught with IMPROVE method is lower than students taught with conventional method; 5) Self-development of students taught with IMPROVE learning method is higher than students taught with conventional method.

Abstract

This study explores high school EFL students' perceptions of teacher questioning strategies, focusing on question types, their use, and effectiveness in enhancing engagement and comprehension. Questioning techniques are vital in EFL classrooms, promoting interaction, critical thinking, and understanding. This qualitative descriptive study involved ten first-year high school students from SMAN 58 Jakarta, using observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation of student grades. The findings reveal that teachers frequently use open-ended questions at the beginning of lessons to review previous material and stimulate critical thinking, with students preferring these types of questions for fostering broader thinking and active participation. Teachers predominantly use Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) questions initially, shifting to Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions during exams. Students perceive that teacher questioning techniques significantly enhance their understanding and engagement, aligning with previous research indicating that effective questioning leads to better outcomes in EFL classrooms. The study underscores the importance of employing diverse questioning strategies to support language development and academic achievement, providing valuable insights into effective pedagogical practices for EFL teachers. This research highlights the need for strategic questioning to enhance student learning experiences, motivation, and comprehension.

Abstract

Learning at the tertiary level has an important role in preparing competent and competitive prospective teachers. In the Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD) Study Program at Tadulako University, the Social Science Education (IPS) course is one of the essential curriculum components. This study aims to develop hypercontent-based social studies teaching materials in the PGSD study program at Tadulako University. The research problems include: (1) the development of a hypercontent-based social studies learning model for basic education and (2) the feasibility of these teaching materials. This research uses the Research and Development (R&D) method using the Rowntree model, which consists of three stages: Planning, Writing Preparation, and Writing and Rewriting. Data were collected through literature studies, questionnaires, and learning outcome tests, and analyzed qualitatively and statistically. Validation results indicated the feasibility of the learning materials, with scores from linguists (4.5), media experts (4.3), content experts (4.4), and student readability (4.08), all categorized as “Excellent”. The effectiveness of this module was further confirmed by the test results, where more than 70% of the students answered the questions correctly. These findings indicate that hypercontent-based teaching materials are feasible and effective for use in social studies learning in the PGSD study program at Tadulako University.
