Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of spaced practice through micro-journal writing in enhancing the writing skill of 20 non-formal EFL learners in Lombok, Indonesia, and examined whether the resulting improvement was retained after a delay. Using a pre-experimental one-group design, participants completed a pre-test, three spaced treatment sessions, a post-test, and a delayed post-test administered seven days later. Writing was scored using an analytical rubric adapted from the ESL Composition Profile (Jacobs et al., 1981) covering five aspects: content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Results showed a significant improvement from pre-test (M = 66.80) to post-test (M = 77.40), t(19) = 4.348, p = 0.001, with a large effect size (Cohen's d = 0.97). No significant difference was found between post-test and delayed post-test scores, t(19) = 1.522, p = 0.144, indicating that the improvement was retained over the seven-day period. These findings confirm that spaced practice through micro-journal writing is effective in enhancing EFL learners' writing skill and that the resulting gains are durable.

Abstract

Mathematics learning in elementary school, particulary geometry, requires students to understand spatial relationships and construct visual representations when solving problems. However, students often encounter difficulties in mathematical problem solving due to limitations in visualizing and mentally manipulating objects. This study aimed to determinate the relationship between mental rotation ability and mathematical problem solving ability among fifth-grade elementary school students on solid geometry material. The study employed a quantitative correlational approach involving 38 fifth-grade students at SDIT Cokroaminoto using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through a mental rotation test consisting in 11 items and a mathematical problem solving test consisting of one essay item developed based on Polya’s problem solving stages. Data analysis was conducted descriptively and associatively using IBM SPSS Statistics version 26, including Shapiro-Wilk normality testing, linearity testing, Spearman Rank correlation analysis, and Spearman coefficient of determination (). The result showed a positive and statistically significant relationship between mental rotation ability and mathematical problem solving ability, with a Spearman correlation coefficient of 0,392 and a significant value of 0,015 (p < 0,05). The estimated variance contribution based on Spearman coefficient of determination was 15,37%, indicating that mental rotation ability was associated with mathematical problem solving ability but did not function as a dominant factor throughout the entire problem solving process. Mental rotation ability tended to contribute more strongly during the stages of visual representation and problem-solving strategy formulation.

Abstract

Film, as a mass communication medium, plays an important role in shaping public perspectives on social issues, including gender. The representation of women in film is not neutral but is shaped by ideology, power relations, and socio-cultural construction. This study aims to analyze the representation of women and the meaning of social reality portrayed in the film On Your Lap (Pangku). A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with the film as the research object and the female protagonist, Sartika, as the research subject. Data consisting of narrative and visual elements from 15 key scenes were collected through film observation, documentation, and literature study, then analyzed through data reduction, thematic categorization, narrative analysis, and interpretation using Stuart Hall's constructionist representation theory. The findings show that the film represents women through five major themes: women as mothers and family providers, victims of economic pressure, objects within patriarchal relations, agentic subjects, and symbols of social struggle. The film also constructs the meaning of lower-class women's social reality through issues of poverty, limited employment opportunities, social stigma, and gendered power inequality, while simultaneously depicting forms of resistance and solidarity among women. This study concludes that Pangku functions as a cultural text that not only represents but also critiques gender inequality and the social structures that constrain marginalized women's agency in Indonesia.

Abstract

Elementary school students' essay-writing ability is often hindered by low reading intensity, in terms of frequency, duration, and the variety of reading materials accessed. This study aims to map the relationship between reading intensity and essay-writing ability among fifth-grade elementary students, identify the most frequently studied indicators, and formulate pedagogical implications for teachers. A Systematic Literature Review approach following the PRISMA protocol was applied, with article searches conducted on Google Scholar and Garuda for the 2018–2026 period, limited to Indonesian-language publications. Through four selection stages, 20 final articles were obtained and analyzed using descriptive thematic analysis. The results show a positive and significant relationship between reading intensity and essay-writing ability, covering narrative, descriptive, and poetic essays, with correlation strength ranging from moderate to very high. Reading habituation and parental support were the main supporting factors, while auditory learning styles and digital distractions were the main inhibiting factors. It is concluded that increasing reading intensity is a fundamental strategy for improving elementary students' essay-writing ability.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low understanding of basic mathematical concepts, particularly addition and subtraction, among lower-grade students, which is often caused by conventional learning methods and the lack of use of concrete media. The purpose of this study is to improve the understanding of addition and subtraction concepts in first-grade elementary school students through the use of the traditional congklak game. The type of research used is Classroom Action Research (CAR), implemented in two cycles using the Kemmis and McTaggart model. The research subjects involved 20 first-grade students of Lembursawah State Elementary School in the even semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through testing techniques, observations of teacher and student activities, and documentation. The indicator of success is determined if >80% of students achieve the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM) of 70. The results of the study show a consistent improvement in the quality of learning and student learning outcomes. The average class score increased gradually from 65 in the Pre-Cycle, to 71 in Cycle I, and reached 76 in Cycle II. Students' classical learning achievement significantly increased from 25% (5 students) in the pre-cycle to 50% (10 students) in Cycle I, and then reached a peak of 85% (17 students) in Cycle II. This final result successfully exceeded the established classical success indicator target. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the use of traditional congklak card-based game media is effective in improving the understanding of addition and subtraction concepts in first-grade elementary school students. Keywords: Congklak Media, Mathematical Concept Understanding, Elementary School.
