Abstract

Emotional issues in early childhood-such as tantrums, aggressive behavior, anxiety, and difficulty regulating emotions require appropriate management to prevent them from hindering a child's socio emotional development. In the context of Early Childhood Education (ECE), teachers act not only as educators but also as counselors who provide guidance to children in overcoming emotional challenges. This study aims to describe the teacher's role as a counselor and the strategies implemented to address emotional issues among young children at TK Kemala Bhayangkari 55 Surakarta. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using a case study strategy. The research subjects consisted of one "Class A" teacher as the primary informant, along with the school principal and two parents as supporting informants. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Data validity was verified using source and technique triangulation, while data analysis involved data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that the teacher has fulfilled the role of counselor through preventive, curative, and developmental functions. Strategies implemented include empathetic communication, positive reinforcement, conflict mediation, building warm relationships with children, fostering cooperative play habits, and collaborating with parents. These strategies assist children in recognizing, managing, and controlling their emotions, enhancing social interaction skills, and creating a safe and conducive learning environment. Thus, the teacher acting as a counselor plays a strategic role in supporting the emotional development of young children.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low reading comprehension skills of elementary school students, as indicated by their limited ability to understand the content of texts, identify important information, and answer questions based on the reading materials. The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Read, Answer, Discuss, Explain, and Create (RADEC) learning model in improving the reading comprehension skills of fourth-grade students at State Elementary School 1 Cimanggu. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 40 students, divided into two groups: 20 students in the experimental group and 20 students in the control group. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests administered during the pretest and posttest stages. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, Levene’s homogeneity test, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, the Mann–Whitney U Test, and the N-Gain Score analysis. The results showed that the mean pretest score of both groups was 62.75. After the implementation of the RADEC learning model, the mean posttest score of the experimental group increased to 90.50, while the control group achieved only 63.00. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test indicated a significant improvement in the experimental group (Sig. = 0.000), whereas the control group showed no significant improvement (Sig. = 0.317). The Mann–Whitney U Test yielded an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the experimental and control groups. Furthermore, the N-Gain score of the experimental group was 0.745 (high category), while the control group obtained a score of 0.007 (low category), indicating that the RADEC learning model is effective in improving the reading comprehension skills of fourth-grade students at State Elementary School 1 Cimanggu.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the early writing skills of first-grade students and analyze the use of picture media in improving these skills at SDN Telaga Biru 1 Banjarmasin. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The subjects consisted of one first-grade homeroom teacher and 25 first-grade students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and documentation, then analyzed qualitatively and thematically. The results showed that students' early writing skills were in the developing stage and highly heterogeneous. Students still faced motor and cognitive challenges, such as inconsistent letter sizes, irregular shapes, and reversed letter writing. The implementation of modified picture media in the form of tracing lines provided a significant positive impact as visual scaffolding. This media effectively reduced students' cognitive load, enhanced muscle memory through multisensory integration, and significantly boosted students' learning motivation, focus, and self-confidence. In conclusion, picture media is a highly effective tool for bridging abstract language symbols into concrete objects for lower-grade elementary school students.
