Abstract

This study aims to analyze the antioxidant activity of waste extracts from the peel, seeds, and pulp of Kintamani tangerines and to implement a practical approach to by-product management based on a zero-waste system. The method used is a pure experimental study with a post-test only design. Extraction was carried out through repeated maceration using methanol as a solvent. Antioxidant activity was tested using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method and analyzed with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 517 nm. The results showed that the peel extract of Kintamani tangerines could fade the purple color of the DPPH solution, whereas the seed and pulp extracts did not show a significant change. The IC50 values were 136.17 ppm for the peel extract, 6727.86 ppm for the seed extract, and 497.57 ppm for the pulp extract. In conclusion, the peel extract of Kintamani  tangerines exhibited the highest antioxidant activity among the three extracts, categorized as moderate based on Blois' classification.   Keywords: Antioxidant Activity, Pulp, Kintamani Tangerine, Seed, DPPH, Peel

Abstract

This study aims to determine the ethanol content from banana stem and corn cob residues with variations in treatment and fermentation time using a starter culture to accelerate the fermentation process. The method used was an experimental design with treatment variations and fermentation times of 9, 12, and 15 days. Quantitative data were analyzed by measuring the average ethanol content and volume produced for each treatment and fermentation time, then presented in graphical form. The results showed that the highest ethanol content was obtained in treatment A (100% yeast) with 20% ethanol after 15 days of fermentation. In conclusion, the longer the fermentation time, the higher the ethanol content; however, the effect of fermentation time was not always consistent because ethanol content is influenced by the materials used, fermentation duration, and the condition of microorganisms during the fermentation process. Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of salung (Psychotria viridiflora) leaf extract on blood glucose levels in hyperglycemic mice (Mus musculus). A total of 25 mice weighing 20–40 grams were divided into five treatment groups: P1 (negative control: feed and distilled water), P2 (alloxan 10 mg/kg BW + glibenclamide 0.1 mg/kg BW), P3 (alloxan 10 mg/kg BW + P. viridiflora leaf extract 0.0112 g/kg BW), P4 (alloxan 10 mg/kg BW + P. viridiflora leaf extract 0.0225 g/kg BW), and P5 (alloxan 10 mg/kg BW + P. viridiflora leaf extract 0.0337 g/kg BW). Blood glucose levels were measured four times—on days 0, 6, 12, and 18—covering baseline measurement, post-alloxan induction, and after treatment administration. The results showed that the highest dose (0.0337 g/kg BW) was the most effective in reducing blood glucose levels in alloxan-induced mice, with an effect comparable to the standard drug glibenclamide. In conclusion, P. viridiflora leaf extract has potential as an alternative herbal antidiabetic therapy in M. musculus.  Keywords: Antidiabetic, Blood Glucose, Extract Leaf, Hyperglycemia, Mus musculus, Psychotria viridiflora

Abstract

This study aims to describe the presence of Pomacea canaliculata in Tulangan District, Sidoarjo Regency, and to identify its morphological and morphometric characteristics. The method used was purposive sampling, with specimens collected from three different locations: Saman Hudi River, Kepatihan Village rice fields, and Kenongo Village rice fields. Morphological observations included shell coiling direction, shell shape and color, aperture shape, umbilicus type, and operculum type. Morphometric measurements covered shell height and width, tentacle length, body whorl height, and aperture height and width. The results showed that Pomacea canaliculata shells are round, with yellowish-brown to dark brown coloration and spiral line patterns following the coiling direction. The aperture is oval to elongated crescent-shaped, slightly widened at the base, with a slit-type umbilicus, and a corneous operculum with concentric rings and a subcentral nucleus. Based on morphometric analysis using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the largest Pomacea canaliculata individuals were found in Kepatihan Village rice fields, while the smallest were found in Saman Hudi River. Differences in morphology and morphometry among locations indicate significant environmental influences, including habitat conditions and natural selection.
