Abstract

Gelatin is widely used in the food industry, including soft candy. It is generally sourced from cows and pigs. However, adding porcine gelatin to food will be problematic for the Muslim community due to its prohibition in their beliefs. Therefore, the soft candy’s components should be analysed to determine whether the functional groups are of bovine or porcine gelatin. From three local soft candy products in Indonesia, gelatin was isolated with acetone by vortexing and centrifugation. The supernatant was analysed with FTIR to determine its spectral profile. Furthermore, the wavenumbers and absorbances of gelatin’s functional groups were analysed in Minitab 18 with multivariate PLS and PCA. FTIR showed that gelatin contained proteins with O-H, aliphatic C-H, C=O, N-H, and C-N groups. PLS and PCA were conducted in the wavenumber range of 1576–1481 cm-1. The calibration yielded R2 = 0.9997 and RMSEC = 0.9376%. The internal validation showed R2 = 0.9998 and RMSECV = 1.29%, while the external validation produced R2 = 0.9996 and RMSEP = 1.04%. Clustering with PCA revealed that the gelatin sample from one soft candy was in the same quadrant as the reference bovine gelatin, while the other two were in different quadrants from both references.

Abstract

Community activity restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia impact the quantity and quality of health services for type 2 diabetes (T2DM). This limitation could increase the risk of hypoglycemia in type 2 diabetes patients. The study aimed to compare the incidence rate of hypoglycemia between national (NHIP) and non-national health insurance participants (N-NHIP) with T2DM during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. The study used a cross-sectional design and was conducted at a government hospital in Central Borneo. Data was collected by consecutive sampling from September to November 2021. Sixty-two participants were divided into two groups (NHIP and N-NHIP groups). Each group consisted of 31 participants. They were interviewed regarding their experience with hypoglycemia in the last three months. The incidence rate of hypoglycemia in N-NHIP was higher than in NHIP (93.55% vs. 87.10%; p>0.05). Hypoglycemia is mostly presented in patients using a combination of short-acting and long-acting insulin. The incidence rate of hypoglycemia in T2DM during the COVID-19 pandemic in Central Borneo was relatively high. In future studies, it is necessary to analyse the factors that significantly affect the incidence of hypoglycemia in the population of T2DM patients in Indonesia.

Abstract

Mulberry is a plant that has been shown to be effective as a whitening agent. The objective of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of mulberry root extract (MRE) and its nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) extracts in terms of their ability to lighten skin tone by using zebrafish as a model. NLC were formulated into gel preparations. The whitening effect of MRE and NLC was evaluated, and the melanin content of the extracts was found to be the result of the evaluation. Based on the results of morphological observations, a decrease in melanin levels was seen in the eye. In the mulberry root extract, the melanin level decreased with an increase in the concentration of the mulberry root extract. In the NLC of mulberry root extract, a decrease in melanin levels was obtained at an increased NLC concentration of mulberry root extract. It can be concluded that mulberry root NLC has the ability to act as a whitening agent, which is distinguished by the reduction of melanin content.

Abstract

Cinnamon bark is known as a medicinal plant to has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in vitro. This activity is due to bark of cinnamon containing several compounds including cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic alcohol, cinnamic acid and coumarin. The aim of this study was to observe anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in vivo. Anti-inflammatory test using Winter method and rats. Rats were divided into five groups negative control (aquadest), positive control (sodium diclofenac), and three extract groups with different doses (300, 400, and 500 mg/kg BW). In an analgesic test using the Siegmund method and mice. Mice were also divided into five groups negative control (aquadest), positive control (sodium diclofenac), and three extract groups with different doses (300, 400, 500 mg/kg BW). Based on a statistical test, 70% ethanol extract of cinnamon bark has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, also showed that there was a significant difference between the positive controls and the three extract doses. This shows that the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of diclofenac sodium is better than the ethanol extract of cinnamon bark in reducing the edema volume of rats and the amount of mice stretch. In conclusion, cinnamon bark showed no significant increment in high doses of anti-inflammatory and analgesic.

Abstract

Antihypertensive and antidiabetic drugs in CKD patients on hemodialysis may cause medication-related problems requiring monitoring. This study aimed to evaluate the selection, dosage, and potential drug interactions of antihypertensive and antidiabetic drugs in stage 5 CKD patients with hypertension and/or type 2 diabetes mellitus undergoing hemodialysis in a hospital in Jakarta. A crosssectional study used the medical records of adult in patients from January - December 2022 with a total sampling method. Out of 101 patients, 97.0% received appropriate drug selection. Dosage adjustments were appropriate in 74.3% of cases. Potential drug interactions between antihypertensive and antidiabetic drugs were found in 90.1% of patients, mostly pharmacodynamic interactions, moderate severity, and requiring monitoring. Statistical analysis showed that age, gender, number of drugs, and length of stay were not associated with the appropriateness of antihypertensive and antidiabetic drug selection (p>0.05). However, there was a relationship between number of drugs (p=0.033; OR=2.996) and length of stay (p=0.024; OR=3.171) with the appropriateness of drug dosage. The length of stay was also associated with potential drug interactions (p=0.040; OR=8.426). Drug selection has been done well, but there is a need for improvement in monitoring dosage adjustments and potential drug interactions by pharmacists in the hospital.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to look into the antibacterial activity of methanolic extract of Excoecaria cochinchinensis as well as the effect of its combination with antibiotics on the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The antibacterial activity test was carried out using the well diffusion method, and the combined effect of the extract and antibiotics was observed using the paper strip diffusion method. At various concentrations (25, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mg/mL), the extract significantly inhibited the growth of K. pneumoniae, E. aerogenes, and S. epidermidis. The inhibitory zone's diameter increased proportionally with the extract concentration. The growth of K. pneumoniae and S. epidermidis was then classified as extremely sensitive (+++) to the addition of the extract at 200 and 250 mg/mL concentrations, meanwhile, E. aerogenes’s with 250 mg/mL of the extract. Secondary metabolites such as oleanolic acid, arjunolic acid, scopoletin, kaempferol, quercetin, diterpenoid compounds, tannins, and other phenolics have been reported from E. cochinchinensis leaves and are thought to be responsible for its antimicrobial activity. The effect of the extract’s combination with antibiotics was insignificant compared to their individual activity, thereby classifying them as indifferent.

Abstract

Sirih bumi (Peperomia pellucida [L.] Kunth.) is a medicinal herb. Anti-inflammatory activities are reported. These plant extracts have been shown to reduce inflammation in many studies, but it is unknown which extract works best. The objectives if this study were determine the extract that has the best anti-inflammatory activity from sirih bumi. The activity was assessed from the impact of stabilising red blood cell membranes in vitro. The research was then continued with a literature study on the chemical compounds containing the best extracts. To determine the prediction of the compound responsible for its activity and potency, several in silico tests were carried out, such as PASS online, Pre-ADMET online, and Protox II. The test results showed that the ethyl acetate extract at 200 g/mL concentration showed similar activity to aspirin at the same concentration. The activity of this extract increased with increasing concentration of the extract. Six compounds were reported to be isolated from this type of extract. Dillapiol and its derivative 6-allyl-5-methoxy-1,3-benzodioxol-4-ol are predicted to be compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the membrane permeability mechanism of ethyl acetate extract. Ethyl acetate extract showed the best anti-inflammatory activity among the other type of extract from sirih bumi. Ethyl acetate extract is a type of extract with the best anti-inflammatory activity from sirih bumi.
