Abstract

This classroom action research (CAR) investigates the effectiveness of the discovery learning model in enhancing students’ creative thinking abilities and learning outcomes, particularly in preparing experimental reports. The discovery learning model engages students in identifying concepts independently through observation and experimentation, fostering active participation and deeper understanding. The study was conducted in two cycles involving 31 ninth-grade students from Class IX B at SMP Negeri 7 Rantau Bayur, Banyuasin Regency. Data collection utilized both test and non-test techniques. The results showed significant improvements across both cycles. In Cycle I, 61% of students (19 individuals) demonstrated the ability to analyze, which increased to 96% (30 individuals) in Cycle II. Similarly, students’ ability to prepare experimental reports rose from 51% (16 students) in Cycle I to 87% (27 students) in Cycle II. These findings indicate that the implementation of the discovery learning model effectively supports the development of students’ analytical and writing skills. The learning objectives were successfully achieved by Cycle II, rendering further cycles unnecessary. This study supports the use of discovery-based instruction in improving critical competencies in science learning.

Abstract

This study examines the forms of gender injustice experienced by the character Ni Luh Sekar in the novel Tarian Bumi by Oka Rusmini. The novel, set in Balinese society, portrays a deeply entrenched patriarchal culture that dictates women's roles and limits their autonomy. The research aims to analyze how gender-based discrimination is reflected through the character’s experiences within the sociocultural system, particularly in relation to caste, marriage, and identity. Using a descriptive qualitative method and feminist literary criticism as an analytical framework, the study explores the structural and symbolic oppression embedded in the narrative. The findings reveal that Ni Luh Sekar is subjected to systemic injustice, including marginalization, loss of agency, and internalized oppression, stemming from both cultural traditions and familial expectations. The novel illustrates how these gender biases perpetuate social inequality and silence women’s voices. Ultimately, the research argues that Tarian Bumi serves not only as a literary portrayal of personal struggle but also as a critique of the broader sociopolitical mechanisms that sustain gender injustice. This study contributes to the discourse on gender and literature by highlighting how fictional narratives can expose and challenge real-world inequities.

Abstract

The irony in women's struggle emerges when societal expectations clash with the reality of their pursuit of equality and freedom. Despite being confined by traditional gender roles, women persist in challenging patriarchal structures and reclaiming their rights. Toeti Heraty’s poem Manifesto eloquently captures this paradox, offering a powerful critique of patriarchy, gender stereotypes, and the systemic injustices faced by women. This study aims to examine the poem through the lens of feminist theory, highlighting the subversion of patriarchal norms and the position of women within the social hierarchy. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research analyzes the poetic devices and thematic elements used to convey feminist resistance. The findings indicate that Manifesto articulates the lived experiences of women under patriarchal oppression, underscores the ironic tension in the quest for emancipation, and ultimately calls for female agency in transforming a world shaped by male domination.

Abstract

This study develops a Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)-based assessment instrument for descriptive texts using Quizizz for seventh-grade students at SMP Amalia Medan. The research employs Sugiyono’s (2015) RD method, implementing seven stages: problem identification, data collection, product design, validation, revision, testing, and final revision. Validation by three experts yielded a 94% validity rate, confirming strong instrument reliability. Of 30 developed questions, 25 were valid (r 0.3291) with a reliability coefficient of 0.78 ( 0.60). The difficulty level was "Moderate", and two questions with low discriminative power were removed. Most distractors were effective, with over 5% of students selecting alternative answers. Trial results indicated students' HOTS levels were categorized as "Good", demonstrating the instrument's effectiveness in evaluating higher-order thinking in descriptive text comprehension. This study highlights the potential of Quizizz as an engaging digital tool for HOTS-based assessments.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate (1) the types of languages used concurrently by speakers in Mentawai, and (2) the social, cultural, and educational factors influencing language choice across different contexts. A qualitative descriptive research method was employed to explore and present the data in narrative form. This approach is particularly suitable for uncovering linguistic practices and providing rich, in-depth descriptions of language use in a sociolinguistic setting. The study focuses on the phenomenon of diglossia in the Mentawai community from a sociolinguistic perspective. Given the complexity and contextual nature of social data, a qualitative approach allows for more accurate verification and interpretation of language practices, which might otherwise be obscured in purely quantitative research. The findings highlight that language choice in Mentawai is deeply influenced by social hierarchy, education, and cultural interactions, revealing a layered linguistic landscape shaped by both tradition and modernization.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Gallery Walk method in enhancing speaking skills among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tirtajaya during the 2023/2024 academic year, focusing on fictional narrative texts (fables). The research is driven by observed challenges, including students’ limited ability to express ideas orally, lack of innovative teaching strategies, and inefficient classroom time use. Employing a quantitative descriptive approach, this study utilizes a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design conducted over four meetings. Participants consisted of class VII B (experimental group) and VII C (control group). Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and observations, and were analyzed using normality, homogeneity, and t-tests. Findings indicate that the Gallery Walk method significantly improves students’ speaking abilities in comparison to conventional methods. The average pretest score in the experimental group was 48.97, which increased to 79.38 in the posttest, with an N-Gain of 0.575, reflecting a moderate to high effectiveness level. The results suggest that this interactive, student-centered method promotes higher engagement and better oral performance. Hence, the Gallery Walk technique can serve as an effective pedagogical tool for fostering speaking proficiency in narrative learning contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the video broadcast of the first debate of the 2024 DKI Jakarta gubernatorial candidates, aired on the TVOneNews YouTube channel under the title First Debate of the DKI Jakarta Gubernatorial Candidates. The central focus is the rhetorical analysis of the candidates’ speech during the debate. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research applies content analysis through listening and noting techniques to identify rhetorical patterns. The findings indicate the use of 17 distinct rhetorical devices, including alliteration, apostrophe, anaphora, antithesis, euphemism, hyperbole, irony, metaphor, and others, each serving specific persuasive functions. Additionally, the study highlights the strategic use of visual rhetoric in the video’s packaging, such as clickbait elements through image selection, bold typeface, capitalization, and punctuation in the video title to amplify audience engagement. These rhetorical and visual strategies collectively underscore ideological distinctions, persuasive intentions, and political branding efforts of the candidates. The research contributes to understanding how rhetorical expression and media presentation shape public perception and influence political discourse in digital platforms.

Abstract

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an instructional strategy that enables students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world projects with meaningful impact. Enhancing proposal writing skills through PBL equips students with creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication, which are essential for meeting industry demands. This study aims to explore the implementation of the PBL approach in improving students' proposal writing skills and examines changes in their attitudes toward writing proposals after applying this method in Class XI PSPT at SMK Muhammadiyah Bojong. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze students' learning experiences and outcomes. The findings indicate that PBL significantly enhances students' ability to write structured and coherent proposals, increases motivation, fosters active engagement in the learning process, and develops collaborative and social competencies. These results suggest that integrating PBL into proposal writing instruction can create a more interactive and meaningful learning experience while preparing students for real-world professional challenges.

Abstract

The philosophy of language is an intricate and expansive field that defies narrow definitions due to its deep entrenchment within the broader framework of philosophical inquiry. Its scope extends across nearly every domain of knowledge, making it a foundational yet complex subject of study. This article addresses the essential nature of language by treating it as a central object of philosophical investigation. The primary research question posed is: "What is the philosophical nature of language when approached as an autonomous object of inquiry?" Using a conceptual and descriptive-analytical method, the study examines language's ontological and epistemological dimensions. The findings suggest that language in philosophy is not merely a medium of communication but a constitutive element of thought, meaning, and reality construction. This aligns with other branches of philosophy—such as the philosophy of law, nature, human existence, and society—which similarly treat their core concepts as independent objects of scrutiny. The article concludes that the philosophy of language offers a distinctive yet integrative lens for understanding human cognition, knowledge systems, and cultural structures.

Abstract

This study investigates the representations of animal and environmental exploitation in the Indonesian novel O by Eka Kurniawan (2016) through the lens of ecocritical theory. The research is motivated by the increasing concern over human domination of nature, often expressed through acts of exploitation that disregard ecological balance. The central research question explores how characters within the novel engage with animals and their surroundings and how these interactions reflect broader environmental issues. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this study collects data from narrative elements—words, phrases, clauses, and sentences—found in the novel using close reading and note-taking techniques. The findings reveal multiple instances of anthropocentric behavior, in which animals are commodified and the environment is degraded to fulfill human desires. These acts not only highlight a lack of environmental consciousness but also reinforce a power hierarchy between humans and nature. The study concludes that the novel offers a critical reflection on the ethical dimensions of human–nature relationships, urging readers to reconsider their role in the ecological crisis.
