Abstract

The issue of plastic waste in rural communities has become an urgent environmental concern due to limited waste management facilities and low public awareness of the impacts of plastic pollution. The massive use of plastics without proper disposal systems has led to the accumulation of waste that contaminates the environment. One practical and educational solution that can be implemented is the production of ecobricks, which involves processing plastic waste into environmentally friendly building materials. This activity aimed to enhance the knowledge, awareness, and skills of young people aged 10–16 years in Ambung Village, East Masbagik District, in managing plastic waste through ecobrick-making training. The implementation method consisted of three stages: socialization, training, and evaluation. The socialization stage involved an interactive lecture on the dangers of plastic waste, followed by hands-on practice in making ecobricks using used plastic bottles. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test instruments to measure participants’ understanding of the reduce, reuse, recycle (3R) concept. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge levels, with an average pre-test score of 51.5 and a post-test score of 84.5, representing an improvement of 63.4%. Participants gained a better understanding of plastic waste management processes, were able to produce ecobricks independently, and were motivated to apply this knowledge at home while encouraging family members and peers to participate. Moreover, the activity fostered a sense of collaboration and creativity among participants by transforming plastic waste into functional products such as flower pots and garden benches. It can be concluded that ecobrick-making training effectively increased ecological awareness, knowledge, and practical skills among young people in plastic waste management, serving as an initial step toward a cleaner and more sustainable village environment.

Abstract

Technical skills in lathe machine operation are highly demanded in the manufacturing industry, particularly in the production of machine components and other equipment. However, in Heram District, Jayapura City, access to technical training remains limited, resulting in low competitiveness among the local workforce. The lack of training facilities and qualified instructors has become a major obstacle in developing the skills of productive-age youth. Therefore, basic training in lathe machine operation serves as an important step in improving the quality of human resources, particularly for productive-age youth in Heram District, Jayapura City. The objective of this community service program is to equip productive-age youth in Heram District with fundamental skills in lathe machine operation, thereby enhancing their employment opportunities and economic independence. The methods implemented in this program include: identifying training participants who meet the productive-age criteria; providing training facilities and equipment, including lathe machines, safety gear, and training modules; coordinating with competent instructors in the field of machining; delivering the training through both theoretical and practical sessions with a composition of 30% theory and 70% practice; and conducting evaluations through theoretical and practical examinations to assess participants’ competencies after the training. Based on the post-training evaluation results, participants demonstrated a solid understanding of the basic concepts in theory, and most were able to perform basic turning operations accurately. The training was highly relevant to participants’ needs, and the majority expressed satisfaction with the program. The final evaluation concluded that, on average, participants achieved good to excellent scores, with high satisfaction ratings for material delivery, instructor preparedness, practical sessions, and the facilities provided.

Abstract

Students today face serious problems in the field of research. First, there is a lack of motivation and interest in scientific research. Second, there is limited access to adequate literature and references. Third, there are difficulties in writing and presenting the results of their work. Fourth, a lack of understanding of methodology. Fifth, a lack of available guidance time and competent supervisors. Without proper guidance, students find it difficult to formulate problems, design experiments, or analyze their findings. To address the above issues, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences facilitates students in the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka program in the field of student research. This program aims to develop students' academic abilities in conducting scientific research. The program runs for three months from August to December 2024 and employs three methods: preparation and orientation, mentoring and research writing, and evaluation and reporting. After completing the program, students successfully wrote a book chapter titled “The Impact of the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Rail Project on Infrastructure Development and Sustainable Cities in Indonesia.” The supervising lecturer encouraged students to continue innovating and conducting research, as well as mastering writing techniques, teamwork, communication, and upholding academic integrity.

Abstract

Catfish is a type of freshwater fish with high economic value, both in terms of sales value and nutritional value. Furthermore, this fish is easy to grow, with a high protein content, soft, white meat, and affordable prices. However, suboptimal cultivation results in low yields, which reduces the income of catfish farmers. One effort to increase the income of catfish farmers is through diversification of processed catfish products (catered fish paste, catfish meatballs, and catfish satay). This activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of the Sigumuru Village community in processing catfish into a variety of processed products. Furthermore, this activity can also increase the income of the Sigumuru Village community. The methods used in this activity were location surveys, socialization, demonstrations, marketing, and monitoring. The participants of this activity were the Fish Cultivation Group (FCG) "Sigumuru Jaya" which consisted of 12 people. This activity was carried out for 8 months. The activity evaluation method was carried out using a pre-test, post-test, preference questionnaire, and monitoring questionnaire. The results of this activity showed an average increase in community empowerment outcomes of 83.89% which consisted of increased skills, knowledge, business sustainability, and partner income. However, the overall activities carried out showed an increase in community empowerment outcomes of 91.11%. The results of the preference questionnaire showed that the majority of the community (50%) chose pecal lele as the most popular processed catfish product because it tastes good (37.5%). The results of the monitoring questionnaire showed an assessment score of 75. Pecal lele is the most popular food among the community. Thus, the PKM team recommends that target partners further increase pecal lele production to increase their income and business sustainability.

Abstract

One of the highest contributors to the unemployment rate based on educational level is the high school level. The unemployment rate in West Bangka Regency is 4.77%, higher than the unemployment rate in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province of 4.63%. SMA N 1 Muntok, one of the schools in West Bangka Regency, has 62 students at risk of not continuing to college in 2024. These 62 students are at risk of becoming unemployed because high school is not designed as an educational level that prepares its graduates for specific skills. This problem needs to be addressed by providing training to students, one of which is the development of digital entrepreneurship skills. This is because high school students are not equipped with specific skills during school. This is different from Vocational High Schools (SMK), which are designed to prepare graduates for the world of work. There are three stages to implementing the training: preparation, training, and follow-up. In the training stage, the material provided discusses the use of the Canva application in designing flyers, creative videos using the CapCut application, and the use of Google Sites to create simple websites to maximize the reach of various business products. The training resulted in seven group projects: six flyer designs using Canva and one creative video using CapCut. The training objectives were successfully achieved, demonstrated by an increased understanding of the importance of utilizing various creative applications, which are highly beneficial for marketing entrepreneurial products.
