Abstract

This study focuses on the phenomenon of code switching that appears in one of Maudy Ayunda's YouTube videos entitled "Study Hacks Ala Maudy Ayunda", with the aim of describing the types and the functions of code switching used by Maudy Ayunda on her YouTube channel, both of which are analyzed using Hoffman's theory. This study uses a qualitative method with content analysis based on Hoffmann's theory. Data is taken from the video script itself, and the results are calculated using the Sudijono formula. The results of the study after analyzing the video, the author found that there were sixty-five data in the types and functions of code switching. In the types of code switching, intra sentential and intra sentential code switching are the highest types, namely 31 data (47.6%) and tag sentential code switching is the lowest type, namely 3 data (4.6%). Meanwhile, in the code switching function, talking about particular topic is a function of code switching that has the highest data, which is 23 data (35.3%), then followed by intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, which consists of 13 data (20%), then followed by being emphatic about something (express solidarity) and repetition, which is 10 data (15.38%), then followed by interjection and expressing group identity, which each have 4 data (6.15%) and the lowest is quoting somebody else, which is only 1 data (1.53%).

Abstract

In the interpersonal meaning, language is seen as a tool to maintain the relationship between the speaker/writer and the audience/reader. The use of interpersonal meaning to interpret written texts is very useful to find out the writer's purpose in conveying information or giving suggestions to readers. This study aims to investigate the interpersonal meaning realized in 20 news item texts of fourth semester students of English Education Study Program academic year 2023/2024, Universitas Negeri Semarang. This study employed Eggins' (2004) Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory and Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) as the research framework. This research uses the case study method because it focuses on analyzing and describing a phenomenon comprehensively. This research analyzes the realization of interpersonal meaning through mood system and modality system in students' news item texts. Based on the findings, it is found that most students use declarative mood in their news item texts. There are 379 clauses that show declarative mood in both positive and negative forms. In the modality system, two types were found, which are modalization and modulation. Modalization type is most often found in news item texts, with 38 clauses using modalization. It can be said that the students have realized the interpersonal meaning in their news item texts. This can be seen from the use of mood system and modality system in the text.

Abstract

This study examines the increase in education costs in Indonesia and its impact on the social and economic aspects of society through a literature study approach. Over the past few years, the cost of education has been increasing, adding to the financial burden on families, especially for those from the lower middle economic class. The study identified the direct costs (such as tuition and development costs) and indirect costs (such as books, transportation, and digital technology needs) that contribute to the increased burden. This increase exacerbates inequality in access to education and limits opportunities for underprivileged groups. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated this problem by widening the digital divide that causes many students to fall behind in the learning process. Government programs, such as PIP, KIP Lectures, and BOS, have provided assistance, but face obstacles in terms of proper and effective distribution. This study recommends sustainable and inclusive education financing reforms, including endowments, results-based financing, and public-private partnerships, as well as strengthening data collection and governance systems. Education should be seen not only as an economic investment, but also as a social investment that plays a role in promoting equality and sustainable development

Abstract

This research explores the relationship between students' emotions and motivation in relation to vocabulary acquisition in English as a Second Language (L2). Emotions are defined as psychological responses within individuals, while motivation refers to the internal or external drive that influences behavior. Both factors are recognized as key contributors to academic success, particularly in learning English vocabulary. The study involved 36 junior high school students (grades 7–9) at SMP Nusantara Palangka Raya. Data were collected using the DERS questionnaire to measure emotions, the MSLQ to assess motivation, and a vocabulary test to evaluate vocabulary acquisition. Regression and correlation analyses were used to determine the strength and direction of the relationships. The analysis showed no significant relationship between emotions (X1) and vocabulary acquisition (Y), with a regression coefficient of 28.900 and a t-value of 0.034, which was not statistically significant at α=0.05. This suggests that emotional factors may not strongly influence vocabulary outcomes in this sample. On the other hand, motivation (X2) showed a positive regression coefficient of 0.006 and a significant t-value of 2.034, indicating a meaningful relationship between motivation and vocabulary acquisition. The coefficient of determination (R²=0.114) suggests that only 11.4% of the variance in vocabulary acquisition can be explained by the two variables. The correlation coefficient (r=0.380) implies a moderate relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variable. The findings highlight the role of motivation over emotion in vocabulary learning and suggest the need for further research. This study offers valuable insights for educators in developing effective English learning strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Indonesia Smart Card (KIP) Program in reducing school dropout rates in Indonesia through a literature review approach. This study was conducted by analyzing various scientific sources such as journal articles, research reports, final projects, and relevant official policy documents, especially those published between 2017 and 2023. The results of the analysis show that the KIP Program contributes significantly to increasing access to and participation in education, especially for students from underprivileged families. The educational financial assistance provided is able to reduce the economic burden on households, thus acting as a preventive instrument against the risk of dropping out of school. However, the effectiveness of this program still faces a number of challenges, including inaccurate targeting of recipients, delays in fund distribution, lack of socialization, and weak monitoring and evaluation systems. In addition, the downward trend in the number of KIP recipients in recent years has been caused by budget rationalization, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and data updates through the Dapodik and DTKS systems. Based on these findings, this study recommends the need to improve distribution policies, increase the accuracy of recipient data, and strengthen coordination between stakeholders in order to optimize the impact of the program on reducing school dropout rates sustainably.

Abstract

This study investigates EFL students' perceptions of using Duolingo, a gamified mobile application, to enhance English vocabulary mastery. Recognizing vocabulary as a foundational element for effective English communication and acknowledging the limitations of traditional learning methods, this research explores the efficacy of digital, gamified approaches. Adopting a qualitative descriptive research design, data were collected from 20 second-semester English Education Department students at Universitas PGRI Delta Sidoarjo (UNIPDA) through observations, semi-structured interviews, and Likert scale questionnaires. Findings indicate that Duolingo significantly enhances student motivation and engagement due to its gamified features (XP, levels, streaks) and user-friendly, flexible interface. Students reported notable improvements in passive vocabulary knowledge, particularly in word recognition and comprehension, facilitated by the app's repetitive, visual, and audio-text integration. However, a key limitation identified is Duolingo's constrained effectiveness in fostering active vocabulary use and productive language skills, as it offers limited opportunities for real-life conversational application. The study concludes that Duolingo is a highly effective supplementary tool for building receptive vocabulary but should be integrated with interactive communicative methods to achieve comprehensive language proficiency. Future research could quantitatively compare Duolingo's impact on receptive versus productive vocabulary, explore optimal integration strategies into EFL curricula, and investigate long-term retention rates.
