Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of Indonesian language and literature learning based on Balinese local wisdom in writing essays for fifth-grade students at SDN 7 Pemecutan. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach, involving 31 students, a class teacher, and the principal as subjects. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed using the Miles & Huberman interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that learning began with the delivery of narrative essay writing material through presentation media, followed by an introduction to the values of Balinese local wisdom. Students were directed to identify, understand, and relate local cultural values ??to everyday experiences, then express them in the form of narrative essays. This process made students more interested, creative, and able to produce writing that is relevant to the cultural context. The teacher acted as an active facilitator, guiding students individually and in groups so they could develop ideas, text structure, and written expression. The evaluation results showed that more than half of the students achieved writing skills above the Minimum Competency (KKM), although some still struggled to express their ideas effectively. These findings confirm that integrating local wisdom not only enhances writing skills but also strengthens students' cultural identity and critical thinking. However, obstacles such as time constraints and conventional evaluation methods still need to be addressed. Therefore, this study recommends the development of more comprehensive evaluation strategies and the implementation of differentiated writing instruction to accommodate the diverse abilities of students.

Abstract

The phenomenon of digital preaching through the YouTube platform has experienced rapid development and has become a strategic tool for disseminating religious values ??in the modern era. One prominent preacher in this context is Gus Miftah, known for his relaxed, humorous, and communicative preaching style. From a pragmatic perspective, this style of delivery exhibits several indications of maxim violations, both in terms of cooperation and politeness principles. This study aims to identify forms of maxim violations in Gus Miftah's preaching videos uploaded to YouTube throughout 2024 and analyze their implications for the audience. The research method employs a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing a listening and note-taking technique based on transcripts of ten preaching videos. Data are analyzed based on the classification of maxim violations and the interpretation of the accompanying pragmatic functions. The results show various maxim violations, including the maxim of generosity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relevance, and the maxim of quantity. The most dominant types of violations are the maxim of generosity and the maxim of relevance. These violations arise through the use of humor, satire, and social criticism, which serve as rhetorical strategies to attract attention, build emotional connection, and create a lively lecture atmosphere. However, violating maxims also has the potential to lead to multiple interpretations, misunderstandings, and adverse effects on the audience. Therefore, preachers in the digital era must consider the ethical aspects and context of language use to ensure that religious messages are conveyed clearly, educationally, and politely in public communication.

Abstract

Surah Al-Fatiha, as the opening chapter of the Qur'an, holds a significant position in Islamic teachings because it contains profound theological, spiritual, and linguistic values. Translating Surah Al-Fatiha into other languages ??often results in changes in lexical and grammatical structures that impact shifts in meaning. The primary challenge in translating religious texts lies in striking a balance between the literal accuracy of the text and the depth of its spiritual message. This study aims to analyze the processes of nominalization, meaning abstraction, and grammatical metaphors that appear in the translation of Surah Al-Fatiha using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday) framework. The research method employed is a descriptive qualitative approach, involving the steps of identification, classification, and interpretation of the forms of nominalization and grammatical metaphors in the Indonesian translation text. The results show that the first five verses of Surah Al-Fatiha contain various forms of nominalization, such as "all praise," "the Most Gracious," "the day of judgment," and "the straight path." This phenomenon indicates a shift from process to entity, from concrete to abstract, and from literal to conceptual meaning. This shift makes the religious message more concise, universal, and formal. However, nominalization can also obscure the semantic relationship between the actor and the action, potentially diminishing the interpersonal meaning of the original text. Thus, this study emphasizes the importance of linguistic and theological sensitivity for translators to ensure that the spiritual message and religious meaning of Al-Fatiha remain intact, profound, and contextualized in the target language.

Abstract

Learning Indonesian for foreign speakers, especially participants in the Darmasiswa program, presents complex phonetic challenges. One of the main difficulties lies in the pronunciation of the vowel 'e', ??which has three sound variations: [e], [?], and [?]. This difference often confuses learners because not all mother tongues have similar vowel systems. This study aims to describe the types of pronunciation errors associated with the letter 'e', identify the factors that cause them, and offer relevant phonetic learning strategies. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentation techniques, with four foreign learners participating in the Darmasiswa Program at Bali State Polytechnic. The results showed that approximately 55% of words containing the vowel 'e' were mispronounced. The most dominant error was the substitution of the sound [?] for [e], which was caused by the influence of the mother tongue, phonological limitations, and the lack of phonetic teaching media. The application of diacritical marks (é = [e], è = [?], ê = [?]) has been proven to help learners understand pronunciation differences more accurately. This strategy not only improves articulation skills but also enhances learners' phonetic perception and linguistic awareness of the Indonesian language sound system. Thus, this study emphasizes the importance of developing phonetic-based teaching media and integrating technology, such as audio or QR codes, into BIPA learning, so that foreign learners can pronounce the vowel 'e' correctly and communicate effectively and contextually.

Abstract

The keris is an intangible cultural heritage that has deep philosophical, spiritual, and symbolic values ??in Javanese culture. The process of making it is not only technical but also ritualistic, reflecting the harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and spiritual forces. One important element in this process is dhahar caos or offerings offered to the metal as the primary material of the keris. This tradition is believed to be a form of symbolic communication that influences the character and quality of the resulting keris, employing a qualitative descriptive method with a Pierce semiotic approach, which involves three main concepts: icons, indexes, and symbols. This study utilizes primary data sources, including the Kagungan Dalem Number 5 manuscript, and supports these findings with secondary data from articles, books, and other relevant literature. The data collection technique is carried out through a heuristic reading technique. Data analysis employs a hermeneutic reading method that is conducted in depth to understand the meaning contained in the manuscript. The results of the study found 12 types of iron along with 20 offerings that have their own characters and powers as well as symbolic meanings, indicating that dhahar caos is not only part of a spiritual ritual, but also contains symbolic representations that describe the character of the metal and hopes for the strength and power of the keris. These symbols also serve as a form of nonverbal communication between humans and heirlooms. The results of this research are expected to expand the scope of Javanese cultural studies and contribute to the preservation of intangible heritage through the development of digital-based educational media.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the language choice patterns of Civil Servant (ASN) lecturers in the Business Administration Department of Sriwijaya State Polytechnic in various formal and informal communication contexts. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques through observation, questionnaire distribution, and interviews with 29 respondents. The results showed that the lecturers implemented a functional diglossia pattern by utilizing Indonesian, regional languages ??(Palembang), and foreign languages ??according to the situational context. Indonesian functions as a high code that is predominantly used in formal domains, such as lectures, academic guidance, meetings, and administrative services, with a usage rate reaching 96.5–96.55%. Conversely, situational code switching occurs to Palembang in non-formal domains, especially in casual conversations with students (55.2%) and social communication with neighbors (62.1%). This code shift aims to build familiarity, strengthen social solidarity, and strengthen cultural identity. Sociolinguistically, the lecturers' linguistic behavior demonstrates adaptive abilities to the context, interlocutors, and communication goals. This phenomenon confirms that language choice is not a random behavior, but rather the result of complex linguistic and social awareness. Thus, the linguistic practices of Polsri lecturers represent a form of functional bilingualism that balances the demands of academic professionalism and the expression of cultural identity in everyday communication within higher education settings.

Abstract

Modern poetry surpasses artistic and academic limits, serving as a medium for reflection, social critique, and shared expression. Its enduring relevance derives from Roman Jakobson’s poetic function, emphasizing rhythm, rhyme, parallelism, and metaphor. This study explores that function in al-Asma?i’s classical Arabic poem ?awt ?af?ri al-Bulbul?, focusing on phonological and syntactic elements that shape its aesthetic impact. This study applies a qualitative method using a structuralist approach. The primary data come from al-Asma?i’s I?lamu an-N?si bim? Waqa?a lil-Baramakah ma?a Ban? al-?Abb?si (Dar al-Kutub al-?Ilmiyyah). The analysis includes close reading, identification of phonological elements (assonance and alliteration) and syntactic structures, followed by data reduction and interpretation within Jakobson’s framework of language functions. The analysis of al-Asma?i’s classical Arabic poem ?awt ?af?ri al-Bulbul? across phonological, syntactic, and semantic levels reveals the prominence of the poetic function. Phonologically, repeated consonants and vowels generate a musical tone akin to birdsong. Syntactically, sentence variations create balance and enhance aesthetic appeal. Semantically, metaphor and metonymy highlight expressive form rather than literal meaning. This study concludes that the aesthetic value of ?awt ?af?ri al-Bulbul? resides not only in its thematic content but also in its linguistic structure. Jakobson’s principle of equivalence between the axes of selection and combination serves as the core mechanism shaping the poem’s aesthetic effect. Hence, examining the poetic function enables a deeper understanding of poetry as a linguistic art form grounded in creativity and socio-cultural context.

Abstract

The drama Shirreer is an adaptation of the Turkish horror film Siccîn 1 into Arabic theater, which requires an in-depth study regarding the application of classical Arabic drama structures. This study aims to understand how the conventions of classical Arabic drama structures and their intrinsic elements are applied in the context of cross-cultural and media adaptations, particularly in the horror genre, which is thick with supernatural elements. This adaptation also shows how modern drama can combine tradition and innovation. The method employed is structural analysis, utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach. Primary data in the form of the Shirreer script is analyzed through the theoretical framework of the five stages of classical Arabic drama: Al-Muqaddimah, Al-Taqdim, Al-Tadhakhum, Al-Hall, and Al-Khatimah. This analysis also considers the distinctive characteristics of Arabic drama, including the use of the fus?a language, moral-religious themes, and the influence of classical Arabic rhetoric. The research was conducted through direct observation of the performance on December 20, 2024, at the Central Java Cultural Park and analysis of video recordings available on the UNS Oase Theater YouTube channel. The results of the analysis show that the three acts in the Shirreer script are mapped into the five stages of Arabic drama structure. Acts 0–1 serve as Al-Muqaddimah and Al-Taqdim, which introduce the characters and the conflict. Act II becomes Al-Tadhakhum through a supernatural confrontation. At the same time, Act III serves as Al-Hall and Al-Khatimah, presenting a tragic resolution and a profound moral message about the dangers of misusing spiritual power. The play successfully integrates the structure of classical Arabic drama into modern horror theater by maintaining important elements such as Quranic verses, fus?a diction, and religious themes, demonstrating the relevance of classical structure in a meaningful contemporary work.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings in the short film Inthiq Rasmiyyatan produced by the students of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor by applying Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory. The focus of the study is directed toward the shifts in word meanings from their denotative sense to connotative interpretations that emerge through myths namely, the culture, ideology, and traditions of the Islamic boarding school (pesantren). This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a note-taking technique centered on the film’s dialogues. The primary data include seven key lexical items: rasmiyyatan, qudam?’, mudabbir, t?j, qayyid, ???ir, and a proverb attributed to Imam al-Shafi‘i, which reflects the educational philosophy of the pesantren. The findings reveal that each term embodies three interrelated layers of meaning. Drawing on Barthes’ framework, the study uncovers that meaning is not confined to dictionary definitions but may shift contextually to represent particular values such as discipline, obedience, honor, and moral responsibility among santri (students). For example, rasmiyyatan, literally meaning “formal” or “official,” connotes linguistic discipline in using Arabic and English, while t?j (“crown”) serves as a metaphor for pride and institutional identity within the pesantren education system. At the level of myth, language functions as a representation of ideology, reinforcing the pesantren’s character, ethics, and value system. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that the film transcends mere communicative intent it portrays how language constructs social consciousness and spiritual values. Therefore, the research contributes to the advancement of linguistic and semiotic studies, while offering new insights into the role of language in shaping identity, ideology, and the educational culture of modern Islamic boarding schools

Abstract

Language interference in regional literary works is an inevitable phenomenon amidst the multilingual dynamics of its speaking communities. Balinese short stories published in the mass media provide the most concrete opportunity to observe how elements of other languages ??enter and shape the language patterns of contemporary Balinese writers. This phenomenon has direct implications for the preservation of Balinese as a regional language in the global era. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing primary data in the form of Balinese short stories published in newspapers. Data were collected through a listening method with note-taking techniques, analyzed using the matching and distribution method, and presented using formal and informal methods. The theoretical basis used is Applied Sociolinguistics Theory regarding language interference. The interference found originates from two language groups: internal interference from Indonesian and external interference from English. From a linguistic perspective, interference occurs at the vocabulary and phrase level. Factors triggering interference include the speaker's bilingualism, the lack of appropriate lexical equivalents in Balinese, the speaker's positive attitude towards other languages, and the influence of developments in the era and media. Interference in Balinese short stories is a logical consequence of intense language contact in the speaker's environment. This phenomenon cannot be completely eliminated, but it can be minimized by strengthening positive attitudes toward Balinese and standardizing accepted loanwords. Interference also poses a challenge to efforts to preserve Balinese amid the pressures of globalization.
