Abstract

Analyzing Cognitive Styles and Spatial Ability in Geometry Transformations Learning through PBL Approach. Objective: This study aims to investigate the spatial abilities of grade IX junior high school students using the Problem- Based Learning (PBL) approach, considering their cognitive styles: Field Independent (FI) and Field Dependent (FD). Methods: Using a descriptive qualitative approach, six students were selected based on their cognitive styles and spatial ability. Data were collected through spatial ability tests, interviews, and classroom observations. Findings: The findings highlight notable differences in spatial abilities between FI and FD students. FI students displayed strengths in spatial visualization, perception, and orientation, excelling in tasks that required analytical problem-solving and independent work. However, they faced challenges in mental rotation and proportional scaling during dilation, often struggling with complex transformations due to limited exposure and insufficient time management. FD students performed better in structured tasks, particularly spatial perception and orientation, benefiting from guided instructions and peer support. Nevertheless, FD students encountered significant difficulties in mental rotation and spatial relations, particularly in tasks requiring independent conceptual understanding. Group dynamics played a crucial role in the effectiveness of PBL. Balanced groups, consisting of both cognitive styles, fostered collaboration and improved learning outcomes. In contrast, homogeneous or imbalanced groups often resulted in reduced engagement and lower performance. Conclusion: This study underscores the necessity of adapting PBL strategies to align with the distinct needs of cognitive styles. FI students thrive with opportunities for independent exploration and structured individual feedback, while FD students require collaborative, guided discussions and supportive group settings. By integrating differentiated instructional strategies, educators can optimize spatial ability development and ensure equitable learning opportunities for all students. These insights provide a framework for enhancing geometry education through targeted, inclusive approaches. Keywords: cognitive styles, field dependent, field independent, problem-based learning, spatial ability.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i3.2024144

Abstract

Abstract: Trends in Politeness Research in Indonesian Language Education Journals: A Decade of Insights (2013–2023). Objective: Linguistic politeness is a crucial element in communication that reflects cultural norms and social values, particularly in multicultural societies like Indonesia. This study aims to analyze trends in politeness research within Indonesian language and literature education journals indexed in SINTA during 2013–2023. Methods: Employing a qualitative descriptive approach and the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, this research examines 63 articles based on publication volume, research methods, focus areas, theoretical adaptations, and practical implications. Articles were selected using the keywords "politeness" and "linguistic politeness" through a systematic screening process aligned with inclusion criteria, including relevance to the context of language and literature education. Thematic analysis was applied to identify patterns, key trends, and shifts in research focus. Findings: The findings reveal a significant increase in publications between 2019 and 2023, driven by the expansion of digital platforms and the rise of online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most studies employed qualitative descriptive methods, focusing on middle school students in formal education contexts. Additionally, there has been growing attention to politeness issues in digital interactions, particularly concerning phenomena like hate speech and trolling. The study also highlights the dominance of international politeness theories, such as those by Brown and Levinson, which have been modified to reflect Indonesia's cultural diversity and social norms. This underscores the need for more excellent localization of global theories. Conclusion: As a recommendation, diversifying research methodologies by incorporating quantitative and mixed methods approaches is strongly advised to provide a more comprehensive understanding of politeness dynamics. Furthermore, integrating politeness education into curricula is essential to promote courteous communication in multicultural and digital contexts. This research contributes to the theoretical discourse by enriching discussions on linguistic politeness and offers practical strategies for fostering harmonious communication in traditional and digital environments. studies. Keywords: content analysis, education journals, indonesian language, politeness research, research trends.

Abstract

A Reflection on Dynamics of Teacher Competence to Cope with Post-Pandemic Teaching in Indonesia. Objective: This paper aims to describe Indonesian teachers' competence in coping with the COVID-19 pandemic through their self-reflection and satisfaction with their teaching practices during the pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey using snowballing sampling was employed. Findings: This study found that from 111 teachers from various provinces in Indonesia participated in the survey, dynamic modifications in the teacher competencies, especially in the pedagogical and social competencies were apparent. Overall, while pedagogical competence experienced a decrease, social competence increased, whereas personality and professional competencies stayed the same. The volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) conditions during the pandemic indicated facilitation in improving teacher competencies, primarily in the teachers ’ ability to integrate ICT into their teaching practices. However, the VUCA situation also recedes the teachers' competencies in understanding their learners (pedagogical competence), in being democratic and reasonable (personality competence), and in socializing with students and colleagues (social competence). Therefore, adaptive teaching and social-emotional competencies are crucial for teachers to manage post-pandemic teaching. Conclusion: These results should inform the importance of accommodating the VUCA framework in teacher competence to deal with new standards in education. Keywords: distance learning, ICT in ELT, teacher competencies, new normal education, VUCA circumstances.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i2.202471
