Abstract

This study addressed the limited number of in-depth investigations into the lived meaning of ta’awun among students in Islamic boarding schools, despite its crucial role in shaping their social and spiritual character. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, this research explored how students experience and interpret ta’awun in their daily dormitory life. Six students, who had lived for two to five years in a Muhammadiyah boarding school in Banyumas, Central Java, participated in semi-structured interviews lasting 45–60 minutes. Data were analysed ideographically and subsequently synthesized across cases using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The findings revealed complementary interpretations of ta’awun, as emotional regulation through empathy, as worship that fosters sincerity and inner calm, as mediation in conflict resolution, and as a means of strengthening ukhuwah and social inclusivity. The cross-case synthesis illustrated ta’awun as an evolving spiritual–emotional process, beginning with worship that cultivates sincerity, followed by emotional regulation facilitating relational mediation, leading to social inclusion and ukhuwah, and ultimately culminating in social harmony and inner tranquillity. Overall, ta’awun is not merely an act of helping but a continuous process that fosters emotional balance and restores social relationships within the dormitory context. Islamic values, collective awareness, and group identity serve as the foundation sustaining consistent prosocial behavior. This study deepened the phenomenological understanding of ta’awun as a form of lived spirituality that integrates faith, emotional regulation, and communal restoration. Future studies are encouraged to examine other educational contexts to expand its transferability and relevance for character education grounded in Islamic values

Abstract

The landslide disaster that occurred in January 2025 in Batang Regency, Central Java, had multidimensional impacts, encompassing physical, social, and psychological losses. Initial assessments indicated that many survivors experienced difficulty sleeping, anxiety, profound sadness, and loss of motivation, indicating post-disaster mental health disorders. If left untreated, these conditions can reduce the quality of life and hinder the psychosocial recovery process of affected communities. This study aimed to improve the mental health of landslide survivors through psychosocial interventions based on Islamic spirituality. A concurrent embedded approach method was used. There were five participants in the study, selected through purposive sampling. The intervention was administered in groups for five sessions. Before and after the intervention sessions, researchers conducted pre- and post-tests using Brief Mental Health Inventory (BMHI-12) which were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test statistical technique. Data from interviews and observations were analyzed qualitatively. The results of the Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed a value of 0.043 < 0.05, where the significant value < 0.05 means that providing psychosocial interventions based on Islamic spirituality effective in improving mental health of the five research participants. Psychosocial interventions based on Islamic spirituality significantly help participants in expressing feelings, managing emotions, constructing meaning from disasters, and strengthening social relationships, so that they can be an applicable model in the context of Islamic psychology and psychosocial disaster response.

Abstract

Adolescent mental health is a critical component of overall well-being and a key determinant of healthy development into adulthood. This period is marked by increased vulnerability to psychological stressors, particularly those arising from peer group dynamics. Parenting plays a pivotal role in shaping adolescent resilience and emotional regulation, especially when approached through mindful practices. Integrating mindfulness with Islamic values offers a holistic and culturally grounded parenting strategy that not only addresses emotional needs but also fosters spiritual and moral development. This study presents a literature review that systematically analyzed 11 journal articles and conference proceedings collected through the PICOT framework (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Time) by accessing Google Scholar and the Garuda portal. The thematic synthesis revealed three main findings: (1) mindfulness contributes to improved emotional regulation and resilience among adolescents, (2) Islamic parenting values provide moral and spiritual grounding that strengthens coping strategies, and (3) the integration of mindfulness and Islamic parenting remains underexplored, particularly in relation to peer group dynamics in the digital era. These findings highlighted the potential of combining psychological mindfulness techniques with Islamic ethical values to promote emotional stability, self-regulation, and resilience among adolescents, while also underscoring the need for further empirical research to address gaps in the existing literature.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between religiosity and social support with academic stress among mahasantri in Yogyakarta. Mahasantri are university students who reside in Islamic boarding schools and undertake dual responsibilities in both academic activities at the university and religious activities at the pesantren. The research involved 206 active mahasantri and the instruments used in this study included the Perception of Academic Stress Scale (PASS), the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS-15), and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Regression analysis results indicated a negative relationship between religiosity and academic stress (ρ < .001). The correlation analysis showed a negative relationship between religiosity and academic stress (ρ < .001), as well as between social support and academic stress (ρ = .010). Religiosity and social support contributed significantly to the reduction of academic stress among mahasantri in Yogyakarta (ρ <.001), with a total contribution of 7.96%. These findings demonstrated that the higher the levels of religiosity and social support possessed by mahasantri, the lower their levels of academic stress. The moderated regression analysis showed that gender did not significantly moderate the relationships between religiosity and academic stress, nor between social support and academic stress (ρ > .050). These findings indicated that the effects of religiosity and social support on academic stress are consistent across both male and female mahasantri. The results implied that strengthening religiosity and social support can serve as protective factors against academic stress, thereby universities and pesantren have to provide supportive and faith-based programs for mahasantri.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the relationship between religious learning interest and religious discipline of Islamic boarding school students in obeying Islamic boarding school regulations, by including gender as a moderator variable. A total of 127 Islamic boarding school students were selected through cluster random sampling technique. Data collection was conducted using two psychological instruments. Religious learning interest was measured using the Attitudes Toward Religion Scale (Wang et al., 2019) which consists of 10 items with two factors, namely Interest and Position, and has a Cronbach's alpha reliability between 0.75 and 0.85. Religious discipline was measured using the Measure of Islamic Religiousness (Raiya et al., 2018) which consists of 60 items on seven subscales covering three dimensions, with a Cronbach's alpha value above 0.70 indicating strong internal consistency. Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) showed that interest in religious learning significantly influenced religious discipline (β = 0.68, p < 0.001), and gender moderated the relationship (ΔR² = 0.04, p < 0.05). The effect of this relationship was stronger for female students, indicating that they tend to have higher levels of religious discipline when their interest in religious learning is also high. MANOVA results confirmed a significant effect on seven discipline subscales, especially on prayer discipline and participation in Islamic boarding school activities (p < 0.001). These findings implied that pesantren-based educational strategies should consider gender-responsive approaches to foster religious discipline, particularly by enhancing learning interest through tailored pedagogical and mentoring methods.

Abstract

Quiet quitting presents a growing challenge in the healthcare sector, adversely affecting both employee performance and overall organizational outcomes. From an Islamic perspective, quiet quitting can be understood as a manifestation of the erosion of niyyah (intentionality) and ikhlāṣ (sincerity) in one’s professional duties. This study examined the influence of toxic leadership on quiet quitting among muslim healthcare professionals, with a particular focus on the mediating role of monetary incentives. Data were collected from 104 full-time muslim staff members employed in hospitals and healthcare training institutions in Palembang City through a targeted online survey. The analysis was conducted using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicated that toxic leadership has a significant negative effect on perceptions of monetary rewards (β = -0.316) and a positive effect on quiet quitting behavior (β = 0.292). Moreover, monetary rewards showed a strong relationship with quiet quitting outcomes (β = 0.669). The indirect effect of toxic leadership on quiet quitting through monetary rewards (β = -0.212) suggested that toxic leadership diminishes the motivational value of compensation, thereby increasing disengagement. Collectively, toxic leadership and monetary rewards explained 41% of the variance in quiet quitting. These findings highlighted the need for healthcare organizations to implement leadership development programs and establish transparent, fair reward systems. Integrating ethical principles particularly those rooted in Islamic values of justice (ʿadl), trust (amānah), and sincerity (ikhlāṣ) can help address leadership deficiencies and foster a workplace environment that promotes commitment, cooperation, and excellence.

Abstract

This study contributes to the state of the art by addressing the scarcity of empirical research on homesickness within the unique context of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), which differ substantially from Western residential education settings commonly examined in the literature. While previous studies have explored homesickness, social adaptation, and academic stress in general boarding or international student populations, this research advances the field by integrating these constructs with family attachment and prior separation experiences as moderators. Data were obtained from pesantren students in Yogyakarta region utilizing a cross-sectional survey approach and analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The research utilized five validated tools to assess social adaptation, academic stress, homesickness, prior separation experiences, and familial attachment. The model accounted for 65.8% of the variance in homesickness levels. Social adaptation markedly diminished homesickness (β = -0.241, p < 0.001), whereas academic stress exacerbated it (β = 0.326, p < 0.001). Family attachment was identified as the most significant predictor of homesickness (β = 0.487, p < 0.001), suggesting that stronger familial connections paradoxically heighten feelings of homesickness. Previous separation experience acted as a protective factor (β = -0.198, p < 0.001) and attenuated the association between academic stress and homesickness. The findings indicate that homesickness in pesantren is a complex issue necessitating specialized intervention programs that take into account adolescents' attachment styles and prior separation experiences to improve psychological well-being and adaptive outcomes.

Abstract

Instrumen yang digunakan meliputi Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Emotional Eater Questionnaire (EEQ), dan Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS).

Abstract

Stress is a common challenge faced by Muslim university students, particularly in navigating academic, social, and developmental pressures. To mitigate these burdens, students seek emotional support from companion animals, such as cats. This study examined whether spiritual well-being mediates the relationship between pet attachment and perceived stress among Muslim university students who are cat owners, recruited through convenience sampling at the Zoom Vet Team Animal Clinic to ensure methodological transparency. A quantitative approach was used with 188 respondents completing the Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale (LAPS), the Spiritual Well-Being Scale, and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Mediation analysis (PROCESS Model 4) revealed that pet attachment was significantly associated with lower perceived stress (total effect: B = –0.18, p < .001). Pet attachment also significantly predicted higher spiritual well-being (B = 0.52, p < .001), which in turn predicted lower stress levels (B = –0.22, p < .001). The indirect effect was significant (ab = –0.11, 95% CI [–0.17, –0.06]), indicating partial mediation, while the direct effect remained significant but reduced (B = –0.07, p = .041). These findings demonstrate that pet attachment functions as both a psychological and spiritual coping resource, reducing stress directly and indirectly through enhanced spiritual well-being. The study highlights the importance of incorporating spiritual dimensions into stress and coping models for Muslim populations and supports the development of culturally sensitive mental health interventions that recognize human–animal bonds as potential protective factors.

Abstract

Anxiety is a common mental health issue among university students, which significantly affects their academic performance and well-being. While social support is widely recognized as a protective factor against anxiety, its effectiveness may vary depending on individual psychological factors such as religiosity. This study aims to examine the moderating role of Islamic religiosity in the relationship between social support and anxiety among Indonesian university students. By investigating the interaction, the research seeks to provide insights into faith-based coping mechanisms that may enhance students’ psychological resilience. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 523 university students in Indonesia using purposive sampling. Data were collected through an online questionnaire measuring anxiety (DASS-42), Islamic religiosity (MUDRAS), and social support (MSPSS). Moderation analysis was performed using Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) Model 1. The findings indicated that both social support (Z = -3.09, p = .002) and Islamic religiosity are significantly associated with lower anxiety levels (Z = -3.52, p < .001). Furthermore, Islamic religiosity moderated the relationship between social support and anxiety, suggesting that students with higher religiosity experience greater psychological benefits from social support (Z = -2.39, p = .017). These results highlighted the importance of integrating religious and social support into student mental health programs. Universities should consider implementing faith-based support systems to enhance students' psychological resilience and well-being, particularly in religiously oriented communities
