This community service was aimed at increasing knowledge to prevent hypertension by utilizing the role of mother cadres of PKK, which stands for Pemberdayaan dan Kesejahteraan Keluarga, a hamlet/village-level association focusing on family welfare and empowerment. These cadres are representatives of neighborhood associations (RT/Rukun Tetangga) in the village area. This community empowerment was held through counseling lectures. This activity was carried out in 2022; the data, which were the participants’ responses, were collected using pretest and post-test questionnaires. The sampling was carried out using accidental sampling with a cross-sectional design. This activity targeted 30 PKK mothers as representatives from each neighborhood in Karangrejo Village, Banyuwangi Regency. This empowerment increased the knowledge of the target community regarding the prevention of hypertension by 22.7 points. The average score of the participants’ pretest was 52.26, and that of the post-test was 74.96. This is in line with studies that found that community service activities carried out using the roles of cadres and the elderly showed optimal results in increasing the target communities’ knowledge in the operation of tensimeters and measuring blood sugar, uric acid, and cholesterol as well as increasing knowledge of cadres and the elderly in hypertension management, and dietary management of hypertension. The SHOPI Project (Education on Hypertension Prevention) effectively enhances public awareness regarding hypertension prevention, with a focus on women from the PKK community in Karangrejo Village, Banyuwangi Regency.

Increasing biology teachers’ comprehension of the principles of genetics is attainable through the implementation of specialized training sessions focused on chromosome and karyotype analysis. In this training, 21 high school biology teachers from Samarinda and Nears participated in a structured training program encompassing three stages. In the initial phase, participants were provided with materials on the fundamental aspects of genetics. Subsequently, in the second phase, hands-on training was imparted, focusing on acquiring skills in plant chromosome preparation techniques. Lastly, the third stage concentrated on refining skills to construct chromosome karyotyping. Completing all stages was required for participants, followed by submitting evaluation forms for assessment by the committee. The evaluation outcomes revealed that 84.30% of participants regarded the presentation and assistance provided by principal lecturer and assistants as highly commendable. At the same time, the remaining respondents expressed satisfaction with the qualityand adequacy of the training. This comprehensive training effectively equipped participants with specialized chromosome and karyotype analysis skills, and the participants notably absorbed the training materials. The anticipated outcome of enhanced teacher understanding, specifically in the knowledge of inheritance and chromosome biology, was to stimulate heightened levels of student engagement and learning interest within the biology classroom.

The Juvenile Social Protection and Rehabilitation Center (BPRSR) of Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) handles juvenile street violence (klithih) offenders but faces challenges in peer mentoring, a vital component of restorative justice. To enhance the skills of BPRSR staff, the Youth Studies Centre (YouSure), in collaboration with the Centre for Public Mental Health (CPMH), organized a community service program in the form of a workshop series. The program aimed to strengthen staff capabilities in identifying mental health problems, providing psychological first aid, and offering basic counseling. The training began with a pre-test to assess participants’ initial skills, followed by the training sessions, and concluded with a post-test. Results from the pre-test revealed a lack of understanding of the procedures for addressing mental health issues, while the post-test demonstrated a significant improvement in both skills and knowledge. Despite the training’s effectiveness, further followup is necessary to achieve a more comprehensive approach to restorative justice. Future training should be more in-depth and ongoing, addressing the identified gaps and supporting the practical application of these skills in adolescent rehabilitation at BPRSR.

A community service partnership is carried out between a university and a local government to standardize processes and products produced by the Ayam Goreng Kalasan industry cluster. Efforts are made through a series of focused discussion activities, knowledge sharing, and material provision, as well as training and mentoring on aspects of standardization, product diversification, and promotion toward marketing with a broader scope. The first three stages were carried out with the involvement of local government. The results of the community service implementation were measured using a comparison of knowledge of business actors before and after the implementation of the activities. A total of 31 business actors, as members of the Ayam Goreng Kalasan Maju Makmur industry cluster, have participated in this activity. Increased knowledge is observed in all aspects: standardization, diversification, management, and marketing. The collaboration between the university and the local government, therefore, can increase the participation of business actors, accelerate the required standardization and certification process, and further increase the possibility of sustainability of cluster business development.

The readiness and participation of the community in balancing their area to become a destination with quality tourism is needed. Therefore, community empowerment is needed, which aims to harmonize the existing strategic plan for the community living in Braga Tourism Village, which requires readiness and participation in its development because the community lives around an area with historical and cultural tourism potential, which of course needs to be preserved and utilized by applicable laws. The community needs to identify the potential and implement suitable programs based on the concept and applicable laws. With this provision, it was hoped that community-based tourism efforts would support the existence of areas with potential cultural and historical attractions and promote quality tourism. This community service program aims to provide material on the concept of quality tourism and sustainable tourism. This program aimed to maximize the potential of the cultural history tourist attraction of Braga Tourism Village, which then targets the community to understand and apply the material that has been given in the training. The activity method is in the form of exposure to quality and sustainable tourism material to maximize existing potential. This program was divided into three parts: planning and preparation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. This training program was well executed because the community had better post-test score results compared to the pretest. However, they still need to learn more about the positive impact of tourism on the environment and its application in the community, especially businesses that support tourism.

Tourism acts as a conduit for enhancing the economic conditions of villages located near tourist destinations. Sreseh Mangrove Tourism (WMS) inMarparan Village is a recently established tourist destination in Sampang Regency. The Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) faces various obstacles in managing and conserving nature. These factors encompass the local population’s limited level of technology skills and the absence of digital branding as a means of promotion. Digital branding is a very efficient promotional tool in the current technology age due to its ability to engage with social media users rapidly. Producing captivating content is essential as it has a favorable impact on public opinion and draws people to tourist destinations. In order to tackle this issue, we have established a program aimed at improving Pokdarwis’ proficiency in utilizing technology for promotional purposes. This curriculum encompasses instruction, development, and support in the realm of digital branding. The program was successfully implemented, substantially enhancing participants’ proficiency in generating digital material. The participants’ videos were posted on Marparan Village’s Instagram page. There are potential prospects for creating a mobile application in the future that includes digital content videos, digital promotions, and a directory of rental and vacation choices.

The prevalence of breast cancer in Indonesia is still increasing. Data from the Global Cancer Observatory shows that the most common cancer case in Indonesia is breast cancer. Meanwhile, the incidence of breast and cervical cancer in Bontang City reaches 30% of the overall cancer data in Bontang (Akurasi.id, 2024). Therefore, there is a need for a health promotion campaign and breast cancer prevention using simple communication methods. This program aimed to provide education to health cadres (PKK) in three sub-districts of Bontang, targeting 100 participants. Five sub-districts were selected from each of the three sub-districts, with seven participants sampled from 10 sub-districts and six participants sampled from five sub-districts. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. The program employed a participatory research approach based on community empowerment, using the TPS (Transactional, Precise, and Skilled) communication model. The program was conducted in three stages. In the first stage, theoretical information related to breast cancer and its prevention was provided, along with 100 questions and answers shared online beforehand. The second stage involved practicing breast self-examination (SADARI). The third stage combined theory and practice, incorporatingeducational strategies through games and evaluations. The program results showed that 83% of participants agreed that knowledge about breast cancer and its prevention was necessary. The program successfully improved the knowledge and attitudes of PKK/health cadres through an interactive, participatory approach. Although there were barriers related to participant agility, support from trained organizers proved effective in overcoming them. These findings confirm the importance of health education that emphasizes two-way communication and breast cancer prevention.

Umbilical cord infections can be prevented by caring for the umbilical cord properly. The data regarding proper and correct umbilical cord care of newborn babies by mothers in North Sumatra Province is limited. Hence, this community service aimed to determine the proportion of knowledge in umbilical cord care for newborn babies using the open-dry cord care method. Thew community service project was held on August 24, 2023, in Pematang Siantar City, North Sumatra Province. In this activity, we provided counseling on the open-dry cord care method for umbilical cord care by presentation and discussion using modules, posters, and leaflets. We used a pre-test and post-test questionnaire to assess the knowledge level of health workers and mothers. Participant demographic data and results are presented in the form of proportion data. This counseling was attended by 150 participants consisting of 52 health workers and 98 mothers. Before the counseling, 39 health workers and 93 mothers did not know how to take care of the umbilical cord properly. After the counseling, the knowledge of umbilical cord care using the open-dry cord method increased by 15.4% for health workers and 24.5% for mothers. Based on the results, over 80% of participants were found to have had a satisfactory level of knowledge about umbilical cord care after the counseling session. This community service program should be conducted regularly to further enhance the knowledge of health workers and mothers on proper umbilical cord care.
