Abstract

Background. This research aims to explore the evolution of portrait art in contemporary visual art, focusing on how portrait evolved from physical representation to a medium of social communication rich in critical messages and social themes. Purpose. The background of this research is based on the increasing use of digital media and the changing audience preference for portraits that convey relevant issues such as identity and social inequality.    Method. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach, through in-depth interviews with artists and participatory observation in art galleries. Results. The results show that contemporary portraits are more than just visual works; It becomes an effective advocacy tool, blending aesthetics with complex social issues. Portraits now not only display appearances, but also convey a powerful narrative that invites the audience to engage in the process of interpretation and reflection. Conclusion. The conclusion of the study underscores that contemporary portrait art plays an important role in strengthening social awareness and offers a new perspective on visual art as a medium capable of driving social change.

Abstract

Background. Electronic waste (e-waste) has become one of the fastest-growing waste streams in Indonesia as rapid digitalization, increased consumer demand for electronic devices, and limited recycling infrastructure create significant environmental and public health challenges. Current disposal patterns—dominated by informal collection, open burning, and landfilling—pose risks related to soil contamination, toxic emissions, and exposure to hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium, and mercury. Purpose. This study aims to review national policies, regulatory frameworks, and best practices related to e-waste management in Indonesia through the conceptual lens of the circular economy. Method. The research employs a qualitative literature review design, synthesizing scholarly articles, government documents, international reports, and case-based analyses of e-waste management initiatives. Comparative analysis is used to identify gaps between policy intentions and implementation outcomes while highlighting successful practices at both national and regional levels. Results. Results show that CE-based initiatives—such as formal recycling facilities, producer take-back programs, and repair–reuse ecosystems—have begun to emerge but face barriers related to limited institutional capacity, low public awareness, and dominance of the informal sector. Conclusion. The study concludes that strengthening national coordination, scaling up CE-driven business models, and integrating community participation are essential for Indonesia to achieve sustainable e-waste management aligned with circular economy principles.

Abstract

Background. The global discourse on STEM education frequently centers on secular, utilitarian objectives. However, in Muslim-majority nations like Malaysia, there is a significant movement towards the “Islamization of Knowledge,” which seeks to integrate theological principles with modern science. This initiative stems from a perceived disconnect between secular scientific pedagogy and the foundational Islamic worldview (Tawhid). This study addresses the gap in understanding how these Tawhidic values are practically embedded within the official Malaysian secondary school science curriculum.. Purpose. This study aims to critically analyze the Malaysian secondary science curriculum (KSSM) to identify, map, and evaluate the extent and method of Tawhidic value integration in STEM subjects. The objective is to determine how the philosophical goal of “Islamizing STEM” is translated into pedagogical content and instructional guides for educators. Method. A qualitative content analysis design was employed. The primary data consisted of official curriculum documents, including syllabi and textbooks for Form 1-5 Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The analysis utilized a researcher-developed coding framework based on established models of Tawhidic integration in science. This framework was applied to identify explicit, implicit, and omitted instances of value integration. Results. The analysis reveals that Tawhidic integration is present but predominantly implicit and superficial. Integration is largely confined to introductory chapters or “enrichment” sidebars, often as simple Qur’anic verses related to natural phenomena. The core scientific content (e.g., mechanics, evolution, chemical processes) largely remains a discrete, secular domain. A significant gap exists between the curriculum’s stated philosophical aims and its practical, assessable content. Conclusion. While the Malaysian curriculum aspires to Islamize STEM, its current iteration achieves only a marginal integration of Tawhidic values. This creates a “dual-narrative” curriculum, failing to achieve a genuine epistemic synthesis. To be effective, integration must move from peripheral references to a structural embedding within core scientific concepts and pedagogical practices.

Abstract

This study examines the complex dynamics of Indonesian Islam amidst the rise of global Islamic fundamentalism, focusing specifically on processes of radicalization and counter-radicalization within the archipelago. Indonesia, as the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, presents a unique case due to its historically pluralistic and moderate religious landscape, which now faces increasing pressure from extremist ideologies. The primary objective of this research is to identify the key drivers of radicalization among Indonesian Muslims and to critically assess the effectiveness of existing counter-radicalization strategies implemented by the government and civil society organizations. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this study combines a quantitative analysis of survey data from 500 university students and religious leaders across Java and Sumatra with qualitative in-depth interviews. The qualitative component involved 30 participants, including former extremists, religious scholars, and policymakers, providing nuanced insights into their experiences and perspectives on radicalization and deradicalization. Results indicate that socio-economic grievances, misinterpretations of religious texts, and online propaganda are significant factors contributing to radicalization, particularly among younger demographics. In conclusion, Indonesian Islam demonstrates significant resilience against fundamentalist encroachment, largely due to its strong civil society and established moderate religious organizations.

Abstract

Religion has long been a fundamental force in shaping social behavior, with Islamic rituals playing a central role in structuring moral and social conduct within Muslim communities. This study investigates the sociological dimensions of key Islamic rituals, including Salah (prayer), Sawm (fasting), Zakat (charity), and Hajj (pilgrimage), exploring how these practices influence individual and collective behavior. The aim of the research is to examine how Islamic rituals function as mechanisms for social cohesion, moral regulation, and identity formation. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews and participant observation among Muslim individuals from diverse backgrounds. The findings indicate that these rituals not only foster personal spiritual growth but also strengthen social bonds, promote social responsibility, and encourage ethical conduct. Participants reported that Salah reinforced community unity, while Sawm and Zakat increased empathy and social responsibility. Hajj was viewed as a transformative experience, creating a sense of global Muslim identity. The study concludes that Islamic rituals are vital tools for fostering social solidarity and regulating social behavior, highlighting their dual role in personal devotion and community building. Understanding the sociological implications of these rituals provides valuable insights into the relationship between religion and society.

Abstract

Justice constitutes a central principle in the Qur’anic worldview, shaping both ethical conduct and legal reasoning within Islamic thought. Increasing complexity of contemporary legal and social contexts has renewed scholarly interest in how Qur’anic justice can be understood and applied in modern Islamic legal systems. This study aims to examine the conceptual structure of justice in the Qur’an and analyze its application within classical and contemporary Islamic legal thought. A qualitative interpretive design was employed, integrating thematic exegesis of Qur’anic verses with comparative analysis of major Islamic legal schools and contemporary scholarship. Results indicate that Qur’anic justice is articulated through interconnected concepts such as ?adl, qis?, and m?z?n, reflecting moral, procedural, and systemic dimensions. Findings further reveal that Islamic legal traditions operationalize these principles through diverse methodologies, enabling both continuity and adaptability. Contemporary interpretations demonstrate increased emphasis on social justice, human rights, and contextual application. This study concludes that the Qur’anic conception of justice provides a comprehensive and flexible framework capable of guiding Islamic legal thought across different historical and social contexts.

Abstract

The integration of digital technologies in education has become a critical factor in shaping the skills required for success in the 21st century. Digital literacy, defined as the ability to effectively navigate, evaluate, and create information using digital tools, is increasingly seen as an essential skill in fostering cognitive and social competencies. This study explores the role of digital literacy in the development of 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration, in students. The research aims to investigate how digital literacy influences students' ability to develop these competencies and identify specific digital tools that facilitate this process. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining surveys, digital literacy assessments, and interviews with educators and students. The results indicate that students with higher digital literacy levels demonstrate significantly better performance in creativity (75%) and critical thinking (68%), as well as improved collaboration and communication skills. The study concludes that digital literacy plays a pivotal role in equipping students with the necessary skills to navigate complex problems, communicate effectively, and collaborate in diverse environments. The research suggests that integrating digital literacy into educational curricula is crucial for preparing students for future challenges and opportunities.

Abstract

Access to healthcare in rural Indonesia remains a significant challenge due to limited medical resources and healthcare personnel, leading to delayed diagnosis and suboptimal patient care. Remote patient monitoring offers a potential solution by enabling real-time health assessments and reducing the need for long-distance travel to healthcare facilities. This study aims to design and implement a systemic Artificial Intelligence and Cyber-Physical Systems framework for real-time remote patient monitoring in rural primary health clinics in Indonesia to enhance patient care, support early disease detection, and optimize healthcare resource allocation. The research employed a hybrid AI–CPS approach that integrated wearable health devices, Internet of Things sensors, and cloud computing infrastructure to continuously monitor patient vital signs. Artificial Intelligence algorithms were utilized to analyze health data and identify early signs of potential health anomalies. Data were collected from multiple rural Puskesmas where remote monitoring devices were installed, and system performance was evaluated using metrics including data accuracy, response time, and user satisfaction. The results indicated that the system achieved a high level of accuracy, with a 92 percent success rate in predicting potential health anomalies, while feedback from healthcare workers and patients demonstrated positive perceptions, particularly in terms of convenience, efficiency, and time savings. Overall, the findings confirm that the AI and Cyber-Physical Systems-based remote patient monitoring framework is effective in improving healthcare delivery in rural Indonesian clinics and holds strong potential as a scalable solution to enhance accessibility and quality of rural healthcare services.
